Tell me about Eva Ayllon, Afro-Peruvian vocalist

Singer Eva Ayllon's on a US tour right now and is going to be at Washington D.C.'s Lincoln Theatre on Saturday. I understand she's a legend in Peru, and her latest cd is her first official US release. She sounds like a slightly loungier, more sappy Susanna Baca to me on some cuts. I love that Afro-Peruvian percussion on some songs.
Ever seen her? Recommend any albums?

I hear some touches of flamenco in one cut on her new one...

There's a big Peruvian population in the Washington D.C. area so she has been here many times, but I've never seen her.

The sound of that wooden box the Afro-Peruvians use for percussion is funky in a good way.

My friend picked up an album in Lima this year. He's infatuated. I heard it one night and found it very nice, but it didn't excite me that much. I'll try to find out the name of the album he has ...

Steve, she played in Chicago last week as part of the local World Music fest. I wish I could give you a report, but I didn't get down to see her, unfortunately. I'm sort of regretting that now. There was an interview with her (through a translator) on local public radio that was pretty good, including some live performance:

The music sounds pretty intriguing; the rhythms are kinda tricky, and i like her singing. I've put her new album down on my want list.

From google: Cajon:

An Afro-Peruvian rectangular wooden box. The player sits on the instrument and plays it with the hands between the legs.

Susanna Baca's band had a guy play this, as did Peru Negro. Previously the only Peruvian stuff I knew was schmaltzy panpipe folk played by street musicians in Alexandria, Virginia. Ayllon, Baca, and Peru Negro are much more dynamic.

So my friend who used to play with Eva Ayllón just put out an album with her singing one of the songs. I believe Juan Medrano “Cotito” is playing cajón on most of the other tracks. In any case the album sounds great to me, I can post more details if needed. #streetteam
