So I was listening to the Nuggets box set last night when it struck me - where the hell are ? And The Mysterians? Nowhere is the answer. So which lost gems would you pick if you were compiling another volume of the series?

? and the Mysterions "96 Tears" is owned by some person who never licenses it. There has never been a good ? compilation for the same reason apparently.

Apparently it's owned by Allen Klein.

I'm seeing ? and the Mysterians tonight. And some weird new version of the Seeds. At a bowling alley.

Several years ago I saw ? and the Mysterians open for the Make-Up. These are screwy times we live in.

There is so much other good stuff. Lots from the Pebbles volumes and Back From the Grave volumes. Erik Lindgren has put out some good comps of more psych-oriented garage, particularly the great Beyond the Calico Wall comp and its follow-up, Thirty Seconds Before the Calico Wall. His "Dose of" CD series (on his Arf Arf label) is a little more weedy, but the last volume (the fourth one) was really good.

Sorry if I'm not answering your question, but it's hard to know where to start and these other series are awesome in their own right.

I saw ? and the Mysterians about 7 years ago in Chicago at an indie rock club. It was great! They had all the original members too! I think they played "96 Tears" twice, once at the beginning of the show and once at the end. Why not, I guess. I got ?'s autograph after the gig. Flint reprazent.

Funny you should mention it, Tim, 'cos I was just listening to the Arf! Arf! instrumentals compilation (it's fantastic BTW, much better than anything else I've heard from that label) and it has a great ? track on it.

"Impossible But True: The Kim Fowley Story" and the second and tenth "Girls In The Garage" comps rank among my favorites at this point. There's a cool Peruvian garage comp called "Sons of Yma," that features Los Yorks and Los Saicos among others. Of course the "Love, Peace, and Poetry" compilations are pretty fun. There's a comp that came out in August '04 called "Good Girls Gone Bad" that didn't, I don't think, get half the praise it deserved. Most of the stuff there predates garage (late '50s rockabilly/blues) but is sung in the same spirit.

two years pass...
? and the Mysterians are coming to St. Louis in March. I'm psyched. Has anybody seen them in the last couple years? Who is in the band? How's the show?

Last I heard, they're still the same guys, and the show is amazing.

Alex is right -- you'd be hard-pressed to find anything from the Cameo label (including Chubby Checker, Bobby Rydell, The Orlons, etc. as well as the Mysterians) on any oldies compilation unless they were remakes. Since the release of the Cameo-Parkway box a couple of years ago, a few C-P artists have had comps of their own, including the Mysterians just last year, I believe.
