any recommendations that don't sound like elevator music?

It's funny, I love a lot of Tangerine Dream movie themes (Sorcerer, Thief, etc) but I don't anything post Atem (scared off, I guess.) So I'm really curious what's good too, cuz I know there has to be a bunch of it (they released tons of albums in the 70s/early 80s.)

five years pass...

The Thief soundtrack came up in shuffle play just now and I've forgotten how great it is!

I remember really enjoying Optical Race when it first came out. Haven't played it in years though.

The band was touring in the west coast area at the time, and their promoter jokingly told the band they should cover top 40 hits. It grew into a bet and a full blown concept after careful consideration from the band.

"Cry Little Sister"
"Everybody Hurts"
"Precious"
"Space Oddity"
"The Model"
"Wicked Game"
"Hotel California"
"Suzanne"
"Heroes"
"Forever Young"
"Iris"
"Norwegian Wood"
"Hallelujah"
"Wish You Were Here"

haven't heard it yet, but i fear it. they knock off a Beatles cover every few years and it always sucks. not a band that does well at covers.

Sorcerer soundtrack has been one of my most-played 2011 so far
