Classic or Dud?

a, Sunday, 13 June 2004 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

classic.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 13 June 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Posting threads like this: Dud.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 13 June 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, Beulah sucks, so in any event, dud.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 13 June 2004 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Any girl who would buy such a lame line = dud, and therefore, the Beulah singer delivering it is also a dud.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 13 June 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

don't hate the player, hate the game.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 13 June 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

you know I'm starting to realize that Fred Durst, as terrible as he is, is really just harmlessly deluded and nothing more.

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 13 June 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

what did you think he was beforehand?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 13 June 2004 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

That still doesn't change the fact that, unfortunately Fred Durst is stil... Fred Durst.

David Allen (David Allen), Sunday, 13 June 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

EVIL PERSONIFIED AND A DANGER TO YOUNG MINDS EVERYWHERE

but mostly just a cockfarmer, really.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 13 June 2004 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I would complain that the subject of Fred Durst seems to follow me around like a bad funk, but I'm too grateful for the excuse to post more pics of him.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 13 June 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

When I was 12 everybody associated me with REM, now it's Fred Durst. Evolution, baby.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 13 June 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

but anyhow, this thread is about Beulah's singer doing it for the nookie (which should tell every Elephant 6 fan where they can stick their cookie).

These fucks can afford hotel rooms on tour? Not very indie if you ask me!

one cold night in london a few years back, i went to some show, and my girlfriend at the time went to a beulah show the same night. miles totally schemed on her in a sleazy way, so she says.

pher (pher), Monday, 14 June 2004 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

This threads are not joke! It is a test for the return of TECHNOTRONIC

Ya Kid K (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 14 June 2004 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

he should use th eline 'pitchfork gave my last record an 8.2' for a beulah crowd.

keith m (keithmcl), Monday, 14 June 2004 03:33 (twenty-one years ago)

and then follow it up by saying to a girl in the audience "but I'd give you a 9.3"

corny indie swooning would quickly ensue.

briania (briania), Monday, 14 June 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

autovac (autovac), Monday, 14 June 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, Beulah and Phish breaking up in the same year-can it get any better?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 14 June 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

they haven't broken up. They just played the Great American Music Hall w/the Stratford 4. Though a couple people in that photo I don't think are in the band any longer (Bill and Pat, specifically). I dunno what's going on with them, but I'm surprised at the level of personal vitriol directed at (what I thought) was a fairly obscure chap. Myself, I have met him and he is not the friendliest of guys, but he didn't really strike me as a pussy hound either. Can't say I admire many of his lyrical sentiments though.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 14 June 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

According to today's Pitchfork, they're planning to break up in August.

Nick Mirov (nick), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

There should be more threads like this one.

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 14 June 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

ILx's vitriol knows no boundaries.

Calvin Johnson to thread...

Damon Albarn

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Monday, 14 June 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah but those guys are superlustful in their lyrics as well. Are Beulah lyrics full of red heads walking and dicks for brains selling their ass to you?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 14 June 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

(x-post in re: to Johnson and Dulli. Albarn is def. a non-advertisting horndog)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 14 June 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Beulah's lyrics are kinda cattier, bitchier w/a little "woe is me" thrown in. Tho one of their songs is a total ode to impotence, I'm blanking on which one it is now, shit....

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 14 June 2004 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Tho one of their songs is a total ode to impotence, I'm blanking on which one it is now, shit....

Is it this one?

Gravity is Bringing us Down

never saw you up there
Cause you never made a sound
If I knew what you up to
I would have shot you down

Hey! Whatdya say?
Im on the rebound
Watch me fall at the speed of sound
You train your fingers, cocked(?) and im feeling weak
Open wide, Im paralyzed

You were workin on the inside
Disconnecting the alarm
Always messing up your signals
Tryin to turn me off

Hey! Whatdya say?
Im on the rebound
Watch me fall at the speed of sound
You train your fingers, cocked(?) and im feeling weak
Open wide, Im paralyzed

Over the hills
The frequency is breaking down
Dont wanna guess but i think its time we turned around

I'm soft, but ill be alright
Soft, but ill be alright
Soft, yea ill be alright
Soooooft

Hey! Whatdya say?
Im on the rebound
Watch me fall at the speed of sound
You train your fingers, cocked(?) and im feeling weak
Open wide, Im paralyzed

We're getting high
But we're still feeling down
Gravity has a way of pinning us to the ground

Im soft, but ill be alright
Soft, but ill be alright
Soft, yea ill be alright
Soooooft

Lonely.. im just
Lonely.. im just
Lonely.. im just
Lonely..

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 14 June 2004 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, that one.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 14 June 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

See? He's just lonely. Awwwwwwwwwwwwww.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 14 June 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

good lord

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 14 June 2004 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Beulah - I even like that song - but the lyrics are often cringe-inducing, as you can see.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 14 June 2004 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd say their music in general is a total ode to impotence, but I've only heard that one album (with the sooooooft song).

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 14 June 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and also KCRdouble-u DJ J@$0n Bent1ey (really well known here in L.A. at least) is a twat, three different girls I know, who don't know each other, had horror stories about him.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 14 June 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

the lead Weezer guy had some of the most indefensible tour/groupie stories I've ever read.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 14 June 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm listening to The Coast is Never Clear right now, to see if I like it any more/less. All I know is it sure as hell didn't make me wanna run out and buy their other albums. I remember an ex-gf liking this CD, but she's like 29 so probably has nothing to worry about from Miles.

I'll post comments as I listen...

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 14 June 2004 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

"hello resolven" short and harmless/pointless
cool fuzztone on "a good man is easy to kill" emasculated by flute riff.

cringe-worthy lyric "don't know about god/but I believe in you"

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 14 June 2004 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

the best song is the one Miles didn't write.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 14 June 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

"what will you do when your suntan fades" has nice trumpet solo, haha lyric: "all those drugs you take/cannot help you save your soul"

"gene autry" isn't too bad...

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 14 June 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

the coast is clear and heartstrings are great records filled with excellent tunes. but what happened on the last one? oh no!

they break up every year.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 14 June 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm really bad with their song titles... from memory I thought the best on the record were Popular Mechanics (but again, bad lyrics), Gene Autry, the one about wearing a lampshade, and Burned by the Sun. There's a song on side 2 that has a nice little noisy Yo La Tengo kinda breakdown, not sure which one that is.

Second album's better than the first, haven't heard Yoko.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 14 June 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

the horn break is actually really cool. Reminds me of Forever Changes

"silver lining" sounds like mighty mighty bosstones tho. shameful lyric: "punk rock was my first girl" yeeeeeeeeesh.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 14 June 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

"popular mechanics for lovers"=icky poo "I heard he wrote you a song but so what/some guy wrote 69 and one just ain't enough" OOH OOOH! I KNOW IKNOW! he's talking about Stephin Merritt! do i get a cookie?

here comes that song about limp bizkits.....

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 14 June 2004 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

aside from the lyrics, "gravity's bringing us down" is musically actually one of the better songs on this CD. The vocals kinda sound like jamc on the verses.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 14 June 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

that "soft but i'll be alright" part is waaaay catchier than it has any right to be.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 14 June 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

you haven't turned the album off yet?

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 14 June 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i am genuinely surprised so many people are aware of this band.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 14 June 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

"hey brother" wants to be al green meets pavement and almost makes it sorta.

"you said you were late/and I planned my escape" is probably the most clever lyric on here....and it implies philandering.

NO CUTTY I'M ON A MISSION!!!!

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 14 June 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I like a lot of what the other band members bring to the table as far as sounds go, and the way the songs are arranged - great pop hooks, everything's compact and neatly stitched together. They're really good with the pastiche. But Miles' lyrics/delivery/POV grate on me.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 14 June 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

oooh my this "i'll be your lampshade" song sucks.....sorry shakey mo. The "I hope you know you'll always be the life of the party" refrain makes me want to listen to that blur song about hanging yourself.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 14 June 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

"There never was a party at all" OOOOOH A TWIST ENDING! Call M night Shyamalamadingdong!

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 14 June 2004 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

haha no worries - I didn't write it!

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 14 June 2004 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"Cruel Minor Change" leaves no real impression=harmless/pointless.
"Burned by the Sun" reminds me of "Kokomo"!
"Night is the day turned inside out" -more nice horn action. Arthur Lee should sue these fucking guys. well, maybe not but i bet they listen to Love a lot.

"There is a place in the red light district/of your heart that I used to visit/its been boring/I can't afford it anymore" at least thats how i heard the final lyric. maybe i'm just projecting with the "its been boring" part.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 14 June 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

well that's done. a live as it happens Beulah review for your approval. I think I can just rip the 2 or 3 ok songs to my hard drive and trade this puppy in once and for all.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 14 June 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

for the record I'm now listening to Blur's "Death of the Party" to cleanse the memory of that awful "lampshade" refrain.....

"Another night/and I thought well well/go to another party/and hang myself/gently on the shelf"

Amazing how bad a band's lyrics have to be to make Blur's sound really really good.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 14 June 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

not really a tale of predation, more like a rock star doing what rock stars do best. but david gahan probably should have known better, a 15yo in full goth mode still looks 15yo, usually Some Great Reward

common_person (common_person), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

The Coast Is Clear is a super catchy record. It's fun. What's wrong with you people?

common_person (common_person), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

seven months pass...
so, did they actually break up? does anyone know or care?
I remember the original topic here being a bit more risque before moderation...
