to be fair, this same allegation can be leveled against a lot of good bands as well.

Not to defend Nickelback in any way, but it took a not-insignificant amount of editing to get the two songs to match up-- the original tracks are in different keys (one starts on C, the other on B) and have slightly different lengths (3:27 vs. 3:43). Still, though, Nickelback made the creator's job a lot easier via egregious self-plagiarism.

See also this Metafilter thread from April, which contains a link to the same thing being done to Linkin Park.

what next, continuous techno mixes from anti-dance people?!

Although it's funny to see here, it's hardly surprising that a songwriter would sound like himself. John Fogerty of CCR even got sued for plagiarism by his old publisher from the 60s for writing a song in the 80s that sounded too much like one of his old songs. (in case you're curious, I think the song was "Old Man Down the Road," which was alleged to have sounded a bit too much like "Run Through the Jungle"). The judge threw the case out of court, stating that a songwriter has the right to sound like himself.

I actually prefer the simultaneous playing of both songs to either one on their own. What a horrible, horrible pair of songs.

Davlo (Davlo), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't someone do the same for the first couple of Britney Spears singles?
Anyways, everyone heard this when that second Nickleback single came out, so that was pointless.

And anyways... pop band in being formulaic shocker? I suspect you can do this with just about every band ever that isn't too erratic in their song constructions.

Haha, I replied to this thread! What a dainty doofus.
