MY EARS

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 20 June 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

puns you can't use in discussing this because they're terrible and i thought of them first:

"trey-z"
"the toke-over"

that's all. but i hope someone used "garcia later!" as a phish farewell article headline.

I Zappa you

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 20 June 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

ALEX IN NYC TO THREAD!!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 20 June 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

(this was also the entertainment at hstencil's taco party yesterday)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 20 June 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

phish and jay-z played at hstencil's party?!

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 20 June 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I think this is kinda cool, actually. Too bad it wasn't for a more appreciative audience.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 20 June 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

the article says it was "to the delight of the stunned audience"

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 20 June 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Or 'stunning the delighted audience' or something.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 20 June 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought Jay-Z was retired?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 20 June 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought phish was retired

Symplistic (shmuel), Sunday, 20 June 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

by 'thought' i mean 'deeply wish'

Symplistic (shmuel), Sunday, 20 June 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I GOT 99 PROBLEMS BUT A PHISH AIN'T ONE! HIT ME!

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 20 June 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, That means there were a whopping 3 black dudes at that show.

(Jay Z must have at least 2 bodyguards)

Guile, Sunday, 20 June 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

haha nice one cece

robin (robin), Sunday, 20 June 2004 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to know how this came about. Was Jay just chilling at the Phish show or was it pre-planned?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 20 June 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Dear Jay-Z:

It's over.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 20 June 2004 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

phish has a rotating back-catalogue of the hottest new traxx in today's hip-hop; after retirement they're sure to be moving into the thriving artichoke-heart of underground karoake

6335, Sunday, 20 June 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I fail to understand why anyone is surprised by this - it seems entirely natural to me.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 20 June 2004 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's way cooler than Cyro Baptista jammed with Jay-Z (as it says in the article), he's fantastic.

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 20 June 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't see this hurting Jay-Z's street cred, cus most hardcore headz probably have little knowledge of Phish.

On the other hand, Jay-Z could open up a whole new fanbase with this appearance. Think of all the fratboys with hippy leanings rushing out to get the Black Album.

Debito (Debito), Sunday, 20 June 2004 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Fratboys going out and buying rap CDs? Shocking.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 20 June 2004 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Fratboys with hippy leanings - it's a slightly different, yet-to-be tapped market.

Debito (Debito), Sunday, 20 June 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

please

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 20 June 2004 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i wonder how jay-z's posse and phish's entourage got along

common_person (common_person), Sunday, 20 June 2004 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I just saw Cyro a couple of weeks ago doing free improv night with John Zorn. I had no idea he was in a Phish side project. I don't know which is more shocking the hip hop/jam band crossover. Or the avant-jazz/jam band crossover.

o. nate (onate), Sunday, 20 June 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i wonder how jay-z's posse and phish's entourage got along

They probably all smoked out.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 20 June 2004 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know if Phish or Jay-Z is being more stereotyped here

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 20 June 2004 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Jay-Z is. Unless someone starts making jokes about "art photos" of underage girlies.

o. nate (onate), Sunday, 20 June 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Nas going to do a show with The Dead now?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 21 June 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Nas, the Dead, and John Zorn! That would be an awesome bill.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 21 June 2004 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Wu-Tang and Dave Matthews!

Debito (Debito), Monday, 21 June 2004 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Jay-Z? Check.
Someone who supposedly likes the underage girlies? Almost check.

"I don't know which is more shocking the hip hop/jam band crossover. Or the avant-jazz/jam band crossover."

I don't think either is particularly shocking, but surely there is nothing at all even remotely shocking about the avant-jazz/ jam band crossover.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Monday, 21 June 2004 04:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Fratboys with hippy leanings - it's a slightly different, yet-to-be tapped market.

Um what? Ever seen a Dave Matthews crowd?

djdee2005, Monday, 21 June 2004 04:06 (twenty-one years ago)

anyone's who spent a split-second on an american college campus has surely seen frat-boy hippies. the crossover's not that difficult, seeing as many frat-boys have the same personal cleanliness problems as hippies!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 21 June 2004 04:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I think he meant it was an untapped market for hip hop, which is debatable I think, but a different point than the one on which
I think you are disagreeing.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Monday, 21 June 2004 04:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah that's right.

But I wasn't being serious, and the comment wasn't particularly clever or insightful. So, I retract it.

Debito (Debito), Monday, 21 June 2004 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I went to coney island on friday in the hopes of scoring some good drugs for cheap, despite my distaste for both and their nu-hippy fanbase. Unfortunately the place was swarming with undercover cops that were literally going into peoples pockets (including mine), in which they found a bit of psylocibin on my person. As a result, I was locked up from 7 pm on friday until 11 on saturday. There were a total of about 100 arrests from the show, ranging from serious drug charges like hundreds of e pills to the smallest thinf like selling cigarettes or grilled cheeses. Total bukkshit. 28 hours in a brooklyn jail was total hell, but I guess thats what I get for going anywhere near a phish show. I hate phish more than ever now...but not as much as I hate pigs.

meloniousthunk, Monday, 21 June 2004 08:03 (twenty-one years ago)

damn, thats almost 99 problems right there.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Monday, 21 June 2004 09:15 (twenty-one years ago)

The clip that Cocaine Blunts links to indicates that "Jams with Phish" = "got onstage with the bass player."
