Yo, while me and Q-Tip were performing 'Vivrant Thing' in Vegas last night...this n-a Prince walked out on the stage, took the guitar from our guitar player and just started rocking! None of us knew he was there until he popped up on the stage...then the n-a vanished like Batman, LOL!

The sound crew said Prince was in the balcony watching the show from the very beginning (The balcony was closed off). Then when 'Vivrant Thing' came out, he just came backstage and walked out on stage.

None of us knew what was happening, then when we finished the show he was gone LOL!

the problem with all of prince's stuff from the 90s on is that i think he fundamentally misunderstands what made him great at one time.

he's a great minimalist that thinks he's a maximalist.

title tracks of musicology and 3121 were pretty good and stripped down imho. there was some other track on musicology that I liked but I'm blanking on it at the moment... but yeah his hit-to-miss ratio is pretty sad.

Caropop posted an interview with Miles Davis's nephew Vince Wilburn Jr., and though he can't give many details, he does confirm there's several projects that will be released to commemorate Miles Davis's centennial. This leads to him discussing the Miles Davis film directed by Don Cheadle - apparently they had to crowdfund that project, and one of the big donors was Prince. This leads to a brief discussion on Prince's work with Miles, and Vince says they've been talking with Prince's estate because one of the centennial releases will hopefully be a collection of their unreleased work together. Fingers crossed!

Same here, but since they're likely marketing it as part of the Miles Davis centennial, it may not delay or interfere with other Prince releases in the pipeline.

(Also, IIRC a Parade box set is next, but Around the World in a Day is done - the estate decided against a full-blown box set, so the triple-LP/double-CD special editions were basically it.)

"around the world in a day" is a weird one, cuz it was pretty much recorded during the later stages of "purple rain" and the start of the purple rain tour... aside from rehearsal versions and live versions i'm not aware of there being much in the way of "outtakes". interested in seeing what's on the "parade" set! i'd like to hear a full version of "an honest man" and the version of "velvet kitty cat" from the 1985-05-01 configuration of the album. and more clare fischer orchestrations! fischer did some really cool stuff that wasn't necessarily used...

Around The World In A Day deluxe boxes tyvm

the vibe I got when doing a feature on ATWIAD last year, from Susan Rogers and Bobby Z, is that there won't be a deluxe box because, though Prince was obviously writing three songs a day in this era, the tracks chosen for ATWIAD were of a particular vibe and sound - that the album had such a particular character and identity, adding other unreleased songs cut around the same time wouldn't make sense, because they wouldn't fit that vibe. Though I think they could at least have come up with the OG David Coleman demo of the title track, for history's sake.

Calabama is pretty rubbish. Guilty ones makes me think of solo jack white. Heaven is so good though. Makes me wish the parade deluxe edition was coming out.

When they announced this, it looked like a bad way to present this stuff, and after listening to it, it was pretty much what I expected. Skipping across decades over a mere ten tracks that feel like they were picked at random, it feels too slapdash, like a sampler or some kind of a promo that was put together with little thought or taste.

It really makes me appreciate how the previous estate managers handled the earlier vault releases. Originals worked as a single disc because there was something like a thematic unity (familiar songs that you probably heard before, but never sung by Prince) and the fact that most of it was concentrated to a few consecutive years. The outtakes discs on each of the respective box sets also had some cohesiveness from focusing on a group of related sessions - there was something like a narrative to follow in terms of what ideas were tried out and how it led towards the album in question. Even weaker cuts gained something in that context.

The only argument I can sort of agree with is the cost of the box sets and how that would leave out a lot of fans, but that's undermined by the fact that all of these sets can be streamed for free. I know Prince put together a similarly slapdash collection, The Vault: Old Friends 4 Sale, but at least he had the excuse of escaping a contract he no longer wanted to be bound to. Having a lawyer do all the promotional interviews for this just makes the whole enterprise feel like it was given to the wrong hands - just because he helped Prince out of that legal obligation doesn't mean he's suddenly a good curator too.

There is some good stuff here ("I Am You," "Tick Tick Bang," "With This Tear") but I agree that the grab-bag quality makes it kind of an unsatisfying listen. The more recent material just isn't that interesting, and I'm wondering if this collection was assembled this way because it was assumed (rightly?) that fewer people would care about a collection of uncollected 2000s-era stuff than a collection of early songs, or outtakes from a particular album. But yeah, a random 10-song assortment of songs (two of which are alt. versions of songs available elsewhere) with cheapo cover art feels slapdash.

I get the sense that the peeps handling the estate have no clue who their audience is.

This was a good but dispiriting review. Suggests more work was done to remix and upgrade the sonics of the vault songs for this release, and that the estate might be thinking entirely commercially. They keep talking about getting princes music to younger listeners but I just don't see that happening with these unreleased songs. That would happen with the classics, and licensing them to things like grand theft auto etc (I think I read the estate turned down a request from the company behind GTA because they didn't think prince would approve... Who knows what he would and wouldn't approve?!)

Completely felt that the first track had been sonically messed around with but then I'm such a Prince cuck that I think im completely fine with it...in fact bring it on
