Musicology. You're welcome.

four years pass...

Yo, while me and Q-Tip were performing 'Vivrant Thing' in Vegas last night...this n-a Prince walked out on the stage, took the guitar from our guitar player and just started rocking! None of us knew he was there until he popped up on the stage...then the n-a vanished like Batman, LOL!

The sound crew said Prince was in the balcony watching the show from the very beginning (The balcony was closed off). Then when 'Vivrant Thing' came out, he just came backstage and walked out on stage.

None of us knew what was happening, then when we finished the show he was gone LOL!

I love how he goes through his moves, knowing they're already mastered, and keeps a more critical eye on the band. what a fun loving task master!

WTF is Prince using MS Songsmith now?

might seem normal but is actually (snoball), Friday, 26 February 2010 17:35 (sixteen years ago)

i want to say "nothing can ever erase the work he did in the 80s" but i somehow wonder if this song is actually capable of erasing the master tape to "if i was your girlfriend"

for HOOM the bell tolls (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 26 February 2010 17:39 (sixteen years ago)

With the amount of stuff going on in the background it sounds like he recorded over the top of something. In case anyone is wondering what the reverse bit at ~3:30 is, it's Prince saying "contracts just make you smaller".

might seem normal but is actually (snoball), Friday, 26 February 2010 17:41 (sixteen years ago)

the problem with all of prince's stuff from the 90s on is that i think he fundamentally misunderstands what made him great at one time.

he's a great minimalist that thinks he's a maximalist.

for HOOM the bell tolls (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 26 February 2010 17:44 (sixteen years ago)

eh he's done some good minimalist stuff since the 90s - Black Sweat, for ex.

but yeah I agree that in general he's better when he's doing less

it's funny, i just listened to mplsound again and thought it wasn't that bad (if you have no expectations except for dad-prince).

like I could put up with the verse and I could put up with the chorus, but not both together in the same song; that is exactly the wrong thing to do, dude

Jack the Dude-Kicker (HI DERE), Friday, 26 February 2010 18:06 (sixteen years ago)

i should do a poll, this song versus his vikings playoff song, which sounded like the work of a slightly deranged lutheran church choir director

for HOOM the bell tolls (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 26 February 2010 18:07 (sixteen years ago)

at least the Vikings playoff song was awesome in its insanity; this is boring, mild-mannered shit that thinks it's shit-hot

replace lutheran w/ witness and you just about summarized prince 2010

title tracks of musicology and 3121 were pretty good and stripped down imho. there was some other track on musicology that I liked but I'm blanking on it at the moment... but yeah his hit-to-miss ratio is pretty sad.

realistic pillow (Jon not Jon), Sunday, 12 January 2025 18:57 (one year ago)

I only have two criticisms about that B-sides disc:

1) they're 45 edits instead of the superior full-length versions, understandable as they would've needed a second disc but it would've been worth it, especially for the Purple Rain and Around the World in a Day B-sides

2) they left out one of my favorites: "♥ or $"

Chaka Khan:

What was performing with Prince like?

It was like working with myself, more than anyone else I’ve worked with. Sia’s bringing up a close third, behind Prince and Miles Davis. Quincy Jones, too: he oozed inspiration and shared it. Prince just grabbed ideas out of the air and left you wondering: “Where did you get that?” He was a really deep and beautiful thinker. We worked on a lot of songs, and they’re all going to be on a CD I’m soon to release – there’s a lot of red tape that’s been in the way, but we’ve cleared it. It’s him and me and Larry Graham, together.

I think Larry Graham had a pretty poor influence on Prince

corrs unplugged, Tuesday, 8 April 2025 06:50 (eleven months ago)

Yeah, he single-handedly got him into JW which is supposedly why Prince refused a hip replacement for way too long (as much as five years due to religious-based objections), and that likely led him to painkiller addiction.

birdistheword, Tuesday, 8 April 2025 07:24 (eleven months ago)

I don't think Larry Graham had a good influence on Prince musically either - Prince was a visionary, Larry Graham more of a conservative funk player

He's good at it but I don't really listen to Prince for extended funk jams

― corrs unplugged

yeah i don't go for the "supergroup" mentality... prince also was, like, extremely controlling, he was very frank zappa-like in his approach to the people he played with.

Kate (rushomancy), Thursday, 10 April 2025 21:03 (eleven months ago)

Surely he let Wendy and Lisa "suggest musical options" in a way that Zappa would never have allowed any of his musicians to do?

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 10 April 2025 21:12 (eleven months ago)

I've heard the argument that once he disbanded the Revolution, he never collaborated to the same extent again, but I feel like there have been exceptions, especially in the last few years of his life with Joshua Welton and 3rdeyegirl (though the results there could be uneven - some really good, some I have a tough time enjoying).

A very rare instance of the Prince estate licensing his music to a television show, and if that wasn't enough, they actually licensed TWO of them, both among his biggest hits.

Caropop posted an interview with Miles Davis's nephew Vince Wilburn Jr., and though he can't give many details, he does confirm there's several projects that will be released to commemorate Miles Davis's centennial. This leads to him discussing the Miles Davis film directed by Don Cheadle - apparently they had to crowdfund that project, and one of the big donors was Prince. This leads to a brief discussion on Prince's work with Miles, and Vince says they've been talking with Prince's estate because one of the centennial releases will hopefully be a collection of their unreleased work together. Fingers crossed!

birdistheword, Sunday, 22 March 2026 19:22 (yesterday)

I'm not super hopeful about the quality of whatever those projects were

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 22 March 2026 21:28 (yesterday)

yeah I would much rather have the Parade and Around The World In A Day deluxe boxes tyvm

Serfin' USA (sleeve), Sunday, 22 March 2026 22:53 (yesterday)

Same here, but since they're likely marketing it as part of the Miles Davis centennial, it may not delay or interfere with other Prince releases in the pipeline.

(Also, IIRC a Parade box set is next, but Around the World in a Day is done - the estate decided against a full-blown box set, so the triple-LP/double-CD special editions were basically it.)

birdistheword, Sunday, 22 March 2026 23:18 (yesterday)

i _like_ "can i play with u?" and the live paisley park stuff from 1987-12-31, so...

"around the world in a day" is a weird one, cuz it was pretty much recorded during the later stages of "purple rain" and the start of the purple rain tour... aside from rehearsal versions and live versions i'm not aware of there being much in the way of "outtakes". interested in seeing what's on the "parade" set! i'd like to hear a full version of "an honest man" and the version of "velvet kitty cat" from the 1985-05-01 configuration of the album. and more clare fischer orchestrations! fischer did some really cool stuff that wasn't necessarily used...

Kate (rushomancy), Sunday, 22 March 2026 23:42 (yesterday)

Around The World In A Day deluxe boxes tyvm

the vibe I got when doing a feature on ATWIAD last year, from Susan Rogers and Bobby Z, is that there won't be a deluxe box because, though Prince was obviously writing three songs a day in this era, the tracks chosen for ATWIAD were of a particular vibe and sound - that the album had such a particular character and identity, adding other unreleased songs cut around the same time wouldn't make sense, because they wouldn't fit that vibe. Though I think they could at least have come up with the OG David Coleman demo of the title track, for history's sake.
