Any of those old blues numbers where they stop the song and wheeze the sound of a train starting up on the harmonica, bring it up to speed and bring the band back in. Someone think for me.

How could I forget Downtown Train by Tommy Waits?

Mr Noodles, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Hot Rail" by Calexico. Hot Rail is used among rialworkers to alarm co-workers when a train is approaching. This is actually what you hear when the song starts.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm sure I remember some godforsaken Tangents article referring to a song which mentioned Yeovil Junction station (where this writer travelled to and from London at the age of six weeks) in its title.

"I'm A Train" by Albert Hammond, especially the cackle on the outro.

Opal: Northern Line

electric sound of jim, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well then, Northern Line- Love On The Northern Line.

How has nobody mentioned Last Train To Trancentral??

emil.y, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's actually an electronic duo, "Chessie," who do music that is conceptually about trains. They're based here in DC, and are named for the local Chessie railroad system. They've just released their third album, and I caught them live at the release party last night. It's good, engaging music, though it doesn't look as if it would be: they both fiddle around on sequencers and samplers, switching here and there to laptops and various acoustic, electric and bass guitars to accompany the rhythms ... occasionally the beats begin to cycle like locomotion, even speed up into drum-and-bass breaks, but more often it's a bit slower and seems to express notions of cross-country travel. They never actually sample steamwhistles or chugging sounds, they just use electronics to evoke the atmosphere. And they do a slideshow on the wall of train photos. I think you can grab a few mp3s at epitonic.com.

al green's 'back up train' cut me to the core in december as the first track playing when i put the beg, scream & shout box in my mp3 discman - on random, mind you - waiting for the train to pull out of winnipeg where i too had just left my girl, crying in the station. it was pretty wrenching.

and then, y'know, 'cissy strut' came on or something and i got over it.
