Why Is Hawkwind The Greatest Band Ever?

I was just wondering. I mean, I know that they are....I was just looking for reasons.

Donkey Dick, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

the riffs!

stirmonster, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Basically, they were playing techno with rock instruments. Hawkwind are the unsung pioneers of techno.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

They begat Lemmy.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Joy Division were influenced by Hawkwind

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

So here's the deal: I've never heard Hawkwind.
An acquaintance with very good and iffy taste said that
"Space Ritual" is a masterpiece.
Is this where I should start?
I mean, don't they have 143 albums?

peepee (peepee), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Start with "Space Ritual".

That being said, they aren't anywhere near the Greatest Band Ever (and I like them).

Joe (Joe), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I'm going to request "Space is Deep" off Space Ritual be played at my funeral. At least the after party.

dleone (dleone), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

They were?

Joe (Joe), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i do like Hawkwind, but they're several zip codes away from being the Greatest Band Ever.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

What's a "zip code"?

Donkey Dick, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Never take your dick out at a party

omg, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahahahaha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, Joe, Hawkwind were playing techno with rock instruments. Not on every song, but on some. Listen closely to "Brainstorm," "Hurry On Sundown," "You'd Better Believe It," "The Psychedelic Warlords (Disappear in Smoke)," "Orgone Accumulator." Those repetitious rhythms would later surface in a helluva lot of techno tracks. Ask Steve Hillage; he knows.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, this is kinda off-thread, but the title reminded me. Plural or singular when refering to a band? i.e "Hawkwind are" or "Hawkwind is"? Just curious, cause I see it used in both ways all the time...

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

they contributed greatly to the cause of heavy metal. aside from writing some great songs and rocking the fuck out.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Space Ritual is probably the best live album and DEFINITELY has the best sleeve ever. However, Hawkwind isn't the greatest band ever. They are really really great though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll never forget my friend Tim's story about being at a Hawkwind concert on mescalin.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

"Sorry, this is kinda off-thread, but the title reminded me. Plural or singular when refering to a band? i.e "Hawkwind are" or "Hawkwind is"? Just curious, cause I see it used in both ways all the time... "

I prefer to use the plural for all bands. Most people refer to bands as "they," not "it." Your question is THE most important issue in copy editing today.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry. I meant, Your question concerns THE most important issue in copy editing today.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Go for 'In Search of Space'. In fact, I wanna listen to it now.

Which reminds me of when a mcdkeith's brother bought the vinyl with the cool zigzag opening cover...

Him: "And look man, Lemmy's in the band"
Me: "Lemmy wasn't in the band at that time"
Him: "No, look at the photo. Here, it says 'Bass: Dave Anderson'. Dave Anderson!?!?"

Sasha (sgh), Thursday, 24 June 2004 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Ridiculous drug induced banter/poetry between live songs.

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Thursday, 24 June 2004 07:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Because they had Lemmy in the band & had chicks with huge breasts dancing on stage. That is, if I believed they were the best band ever, which I don't. Just a really, REALLY good one. 'Space Ritual' is definitely among the best live records ever, and the sleeve was awesome, as was the cover for 'In Search of Space,' especially the old ones with the booklet in them.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

which reminds me, hearing vertical slit cover "i remember nothing" in instrumental hawkwind 14+ minute style = classic.

two years pass...
After hearing "You Shouldn't Do That" in one of the last Life On Mars episodes, I finally got around to watching the Hawkwind doc that the BBC aired a couple months ago...

Observations:

1. The free Hawkwind freakout in the collapsing inflatable dome outside the Isle Of Wright festival might be one of the greatest concerts ever.
2. Lemmy's importance to Hawkwind isn't only limited to bass but in balancing out drug typology. Lemmy's scary biker amphetamine is the sinister DANGER lurking in the background of all that acid-fried squonking. Too bad that differing drug usage cuts any band's life span by two-thirds.
3. I miss Robert Calvert
4. The greatest part of any Hawkwind song (and one of my favorite parts in any song) is at the 5:46 mark in "You'd Better Believe It" when that waking ancient spaceship shakes off several thousand years of interplanetary dust and reaches escape velocity. Oh yeah, and the main riff kicks back in.

whoa how can i see this?

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

i think any hawkwind concert circa space ritual must have been one of the greatest concerts ever. if i had a (silver) time machine and could go back to any one point in the past, that would definitely be up there for consideration. it was a great documentary despite the absence of misery guts brock though it would have been nice if they had tracked down stacia.

also, totally otm regarding lemmy.

I don't remember there being much actual footage of the collapsing IoW gig. And Brocklessness made it less than perfect. It was good tho, but hardly definitive.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 22:26 (eighteen years ago)

waitaminit I've seen the Isle of Wight documentary and I don't remember seeing Hawkwind in it at all! Was this footage cut from the theatrical release or something...?

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 22:40 (eighteen years ago)

The festival might have been a bit longer than 90 minutes, yeah

*rimshot*

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 22:43 (eighteen years ago)

Wasn't the Hawkwind-in-a-tent thing a free gig outside the actual festival? In which case it wouldn't have been on the official docu, I guess.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 22:44 (eighteen years ago)

maybe that schizo Joni Mitchell heckler turned Hawkwind invisible?

sexyDancer, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 22:51 (eighteen years ago)

I don't remember there being much actual footage of the collapsing IoW gig

There wasn't, but what footage there was looked pretty full-on.

And Brocklessness made it less than perfect.

Agreed. I love Lemmy's line about what Hawkwind means to him - "getting as fried out as you possibly can but still being able to play.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 01:25 (eighteen years ago)

It was dead good, don't get me wrong.

what is the freaking DEAL with uknova? doesn't let you create an account in any browser. doesn't let you create an account if you login through a UK proxy. doesn't let you search or read the forums with an account to figure out if there's some frigging issue with their login/create an account page.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 09:19 (eighteen years ago)

Aaahhh, this documentary was GRATE. Who's got my copy of it now? I want to watch it again, but one of my bandmates went off with it.

Elvis Telecom OTM about a lot of things - the differing drugs usage was both thing that fuelled them, and the thing that destroyed them (at least the classic era).

It was really sad that Brock wouldn't be a part of it, but I suppose if you'd had him, you wouldn't have had all the other differing viewpoints of the people he isn't speaking to for legal reasons.

Bob Calvert... wow. I had no idea. Of course he was COMPLETELY INSANE but again, that element of danger and unpredictability and menace balancing out all the hippy wibble. Those early shots of him dancing about with Miss Stacia (singing Urban Guerilla?) - WOW!

I don't think Hawkwind invented techno, but techno clearly owes a *lot* to Hawkwind. If they invented a genre, it was Spacerock. Duh.

Andi Mags, Thursday, 19 April 2007 02:59 (eighteen years ago)

Narrative? I was more looking at the film clips and enjoying the interviews, esp. with Lemmy and Nik Turner.

And they HARDLY portrayed them as living in a vaccuum - they were hugely influenced by and entrenched in the Notting Hill/Ladbroke Grove scene going on around them. People became part of that band through that scene - Huw was talking about playing with a band they supported at a free gig. Lemmy talked about how "easy" it was to get in the band, that they drafted soundmen, roadies, drug dealers, dancers who hung around them. This really gave a sense that they did not behave in the way that ordinary "muso" prog bands of the period did.

They got REALLY into the influences - in terms of saying that they were hugely influenced by the Science Fiction writers of the period, Michael Moorcock, Calvert, the alternative and underground press. Why do "influences" have to be purely musical? I was much happier seeing Moorcock talking about their collaborations with one another than hearing someone going "Yeah, we heard a NEU! record and an Amon Duul record..."

It was a bit hobbled in that sense by not having Brock involved - in terms of he was the principle songwriter of music, so you're just not going to hear the musical influences without his input - but I thought they more than made up for it by giving the background of the countercultural sea they were floating in.

Masonic Boom, Friday, 20 April 2007 10:05 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah when somebody says "Ladbroke Grove scene" I say "What's that?" but doubtless it's a lot more evocative to someone who already knows a bit about it.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 20 April 2007 12:31 (eighteen years ago)

that makes me think 'Acid Jazz' ha ha

blueski, Friday, 20 April 2007 12:35 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, there was a vintage documentary on the Ladbroke Grove hippie scene ten minutes after the Hawkwind docu. It was very much "of the time" but still very cute. And I couldn't get over just how much the principle hippie they kept interviewing looked and sounded JUST LIKE Louis Jagger. It was a bit disconserting.

Masonic Boom, Friday, 20 April 2007 12:37 (eighteen years ago)

Off the top of my head, better-known Ladbroke Grove scene bands from '69/'70/'71 would have been Third Ear Band, High Tide, I think the Pink Fairies as well?

Pashmina, Friday, 20 April 2007 12:46 (eighteen years ago)

Jesus christ, the state of nick kent these days!

Pashmina, Friday, 20 April 2007 12:57 (eighteen years ago)

pink fairies yeah and weren't the deviants part of that?

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Friday, 20 April 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

High Tide & Pink Fairies both rocked, don't know the others.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 20 April 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sure Nick Kent's looked like that for the last 20 years.

Noodle Vague, Friday, 20 April 2007 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

I still haven't heard any Hawkwind records post-Lemmy. Which late 70s is best - Quark?

'quark, strangeness and charm' rules as does 'astounding sounds, amazing music' (though lots of hawkfans would disagree). i also have a lot of love for 'pxr5' and the 'hawklords' lp. i'm sure if they had marketed it better 'psi power' could have been a top ten hit. 'levitation' is probably the last good studio album though 'sonic attack' has the odd moment. after that it's pretty much downhill all the way although i'm quite partial to 'church of hawkwind' which was to all intents and purposes a dave brock solo album with a bit of help form harvey bainbridge. it also came with a pseudo hawklog.

Bunnybrains...by Brian Turner..
"But maybe the greatest moment was them opening for Hawkwind (!) at Coney Island High. The tiny place already had half the floor taken up by Hawkwind's tons of laser show/light gear, and was also overstuffed with psychedelic hermits just coming out of their homes for the first time since 1977. Many of them dosed, not a good idea during the Bunnybrains' set, lots of people were abusing the 'brains verbally for their ensuing "bad trips" and I saw at least 4 of 'em drop to the floor. Whoa."

Yeah, this set really is astonishing. The equal of Space Ritual for sure.

unperson, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 16:50 (seventeen years ago)

I got that on EMI CD, I think it was called "1999 Party", something like that. I read about how they found the tapes in EMI's vault in mojo magazine or rekkird kollector or s.th. back in the day, I worked myself up into a frenzy of anticipation over it coming out, and it did not dissapoint in any way whatsoever. The version of "brainbox pollution" slays, and the version of "the watcher" is super-spooky. I envy those who have never heard it before and who are listening to it for the first time.

Pashmina, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 18:45 (seventeen years ago)

Are any other of the thousand or so Hawkwind live albums (other than Space Ritual worth hearing.)

I've been enjoying the leaner sounds of Quark, Strangeness etc too recently.

Bring Me The Head Of Yuri Gagarin from 1973 is kinda worthy - the sound quality is horrid, but it's worthy for all the random Calvert poetry/rantings over Dik Mik's VCO'ing.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 6 March 2008 01:12 (seventeen years ago)

We got this book at the library called ROCK LEGENDS AT ROCKFIELD. It's about twelve chapters, one chapter per band, that relates stories of recording at the "legendary" Wales studio. Hawkwind recorded everything from Doremi to Space Bandits there. All of their classic studio albums, basically. At the end of the Hawkwind chapter, it's reported that Dave Brock found a bunch of Hawkwind tapes that were recorded at the studio and never released and that the best of the would be released in late 2007 or early 2008 as The Rockfield Tapes. Anyone heard anything about this?

The book is kind of silly but nice. Some good stories. I've got no interest in reading a few of the chapters that are in it, though. There is a Motorhead chapter (first album recorded at Rock Field).

Occurred to me that if I burned my Under the Blood Red Lava Lamp to a hardrive I'd know where to find it in future. Only drag is I can't find it now, thought was triggered by seeing the sleeve which disc isn't in.

Have finally accumulated a lot of live stuff by Hawkwind over last couple of years. Seems trade-unfriendly-ness has been lifted so they're turning up on torrent sites. Pretty headwreckingly fine in places. Trepanning or similar.
I tend to think they were about the closest the UK got to krautrock, them & Eno era Roxy, maybe Kingdom Come in places too?
