HELP! New office mate likes Deep Purple

My former office mate ruled. He could listen to anything. As of Tuesday, I'm getting a new office mate who is a middle aged Russian who loved Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy and Led Zepplin (and drinking vodka). I realize this isn't all that terrible except THIS IS ALL HE LIKES. What can I play to gradualy open him to the range of stuff that gets discussed here?

frankE (frankE), Friday, 25 June 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you are the problem, not him.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 25 June 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

be thankful he doesnt like van halen.....not to mention who complains about having to listen to led zeppelin and thin lizzy and expects sympathy?

greg, Friday, 25 June 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah! Zep and Thin Lizzy rock! Deep Purple are at worst bearable. Try and get him to play some Sabbath perhaps?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 25 June 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Play him The Rapture "Echoes" and tell him its Led Zeppelin practicing "The Crunge"

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 25 June 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

and since when were Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy and Led Zeppelin not in the range of stuff that gets discussed here?

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 25 June 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Or play him 'house of jealous lovers' sped up by a factor of 15% and tell him it's Led Zeppelin.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 25 June 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Check for me on the sister thread: "HELP! New ofice mate doesn't like Deep Purple."

briania (briania), Friday, 25 June 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Would you only want to listen to these three all the time? Literally? Only. These. Three.

frankE (frankE), Friday, 25 June 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you are the problem, not him.

thats where sabbath, cactus, dio, mountain, etc. come in.

greg, Friday, 25 June 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

FrankE you have my sympathy, it could be worse though, might be Zep, Purple and Bad Company,

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 25 June 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"The entire spectrum human emotion and musical nuance may be found and expressed in the extensive catalogs of Zep, Purple & Lizzy." Discuss.

briania (briania), Friday, 25 June 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

not much to discuss since it's entirely true.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 25 June 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, bad co were pretty horrible.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 25 June 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Feeling wistful? "Cowboy Song." Expansive? "Concerto for Group & Orchestra." Whimsical? "Carouselambra." What more does one need? I say hats off to this single-minded fellow!

briania (briania), Friday, 25 June 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

definitely, you need to bring in some leaf hound, cactus, buffalo, etc., and school the man.

SO late to this, and Stence summed it up so perfectly in his first post that my entry here is (more) needless (than usual). What, pray tell, is precisely wrong with Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy and Led Zep? What were you going to do, duct tape him to his desk and make him listen to Dizze Rascal, Clinic and Ashlee Simpson?

A natural progression from 70's hard rock/heavy metal would be moving from that towards things like Motorhead, Helmet, a bit of punk perhaps, and finally culminating in Air Supply.

Take turns for chrissakes. Play him your stuff every other day. Share the vodka, offer some JD. Try the Yardbirds. Tell him that Clapton and Jeff Beck and Sonny Boy Williamson also spent time here and show him a few of the variants that came from that point. The guy ought to appreciate the blues if he's into these bands. He's probably an ok dude and could possibly have the same inhibitions about you. I'd relish an opportunity like this.

juiceboxxx (juiceboxxx), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:49 (twenty-one years ago)

It doesn't matter how good something is. If you've heard it 10 times or more in a row, you do get sick of it. Threads like these are not a comment on how good an artist is, they're a comment on an excruciating lack of variety. There is a difference. I love Led Zeppelin. But would I want to listen to them all day every day the same songs/album? Hell no.

As an afterthought...tonight in the local grocery store I was subjected to Whitney Houston's "Didn't We Almost Have It All"...words simply fail to describe how inconvenient it was that I literally could not stand to be in there any longer and yet really did need to buy some things. After suffering through the torture of that song for an agonizing minute or so, I just had to leave. Moral: It could be worse, Frank. It really could. But the key is communication.

The lady I complained about at my work that plays the same oldies station with the same songs over and over actually had it on a different station last time I was there. It was great. Fleetwood Mac's "Sara" came on and I've never had such a case of goosepimples. That's what happens when I haven't heard that song for a few years.

Andrzej B and Bimble otm, poor FrankE, all you guys going 'duh, what's wrong with Purple or Zep or Lizzy' Read it again. I'm sure you'd be thrilled to hear Stormbringer or even worse Purpendicular for the 20th time that week. Or put it another way, some guy only listens to 3 artists you can take or leave, I bet you'd be a little pissed.

Fwiw 80% of Purple is dud, 90% of Zepellin is Dud and about 60% of Lizzy is dud.

An update:

I left my desk while my office mate was at lunch and ended up being away longer than I had anticipated. WinAmp was rolling along and the speakers were blaring. When I came back I realized my error and apologized to my (Thin Lizzy / Led Zep loving) office mate. He said, "It's okay, as long as it's not rap."

Little did he realize, It Takes a Nation of Millions... was currently spinning the hard drive.

I'm just compensating for the guilt I still feel for buying all those Smiths albums as a teenager.

I'm glad we're all agreed that musical taste exists in a political vacuum.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Thursday, 5 August 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Saying that this might not ALWAYS be true:

You don't think "I hate all rap" is an idiot statement with racist undertones?

does not mean that I believe this statement either:

I'm glad we're all agreed that musical taste exists in a political vacuum

I'm not saying that there aren't often (and dean said the same thing) racial undertones to when people say this, but I think it is POSSIBLE that someone could just dislike rap without being racist....

That said, I think the important thing here is to remember that we all hate the Polish.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 5 August 2004 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)
