Miroslav Vitous – Magical Shepard

What a odd record. Vitous gets kicked out of Weather Report by Joe Zawinul because he states he can’t play funk, so Miroslav hooks up with Herbie Hancock, his producer David Rubinson, Airto Moreira and even Jack DeJohnette on a couple of cuts and makes a fusion disco record.

It’s a pretty good jazz funk/disco record. There is all sorts of repetitive female vocals that sound like loops with the tape delay on “New York City”. Herbie brings his mid70s kit bag of Rhodes, Clavinet and big funky analogs to the session. Vitous plays some good funk bass all over the record, not as slappy as the Headhunters, but it has definite movement.

The cover is hilarious, Vitous is wearing something that looks like an English sheep dog staring out at the cosmos while posed on the same set that I think they filmed Orson Welles for that movie about Nostradamus.

If you like Herbie’s Headhunters albums, this record is worth searching out.

Sounds great! Who said that he couldn't play funk, Miroslav or Zawinul?

Zawinul wanted more of an r&b sound and felt that Vitous was holding them back. This record does prove that Vitous could have held his own in where Weather Report went after his departure. Alphonso Johnson was the bassist that replaced Vitous and he has more of the slap bass sound.

http://www.binkie.net/wrdisc/Sweetnighter.html

In order to realize his musical vision, Zawinul had to bring in a different bass player and drummer. "Miroslav, being a great bass player in one way, was not the bass player for other things we wanted to do. I had written a few pieces like 'Boogie Woogie Waltz' and '125th Street Congress' for the third album [Sweetnighter] which required a little more versatility.

Miroslav Vitous summed it up this way: "Improvisation was the mark of the band, but Joe Zawinul wanted to get more commercial, in a sense. It's a questions of money in the U.S., and what the music business is doing to music. The band had to change--it was in a bad financial situation. It moved into a steady rhythm section, black funk type of thing."

The interesting thing is that after I heard this Vitous record with Herbie Hancock, I don't get why it wouldn't have worked. It probably had more to do with ego and control of the band than musical ability.

"Magical Shepard" is a good find, if you like this kind of jazz. Vitous' first album "Infinite Search" is another good but kind of obscure jazz fusion album with a band that has John McLaughlin, Hancock, DeJohnette and Joe Henderson. Vitous did another one in 1970 called "Purple" that has McLaughlin, Zawinul and Billy Cobham that I would like to hear, but it hasn't been in print for a long time. It was a session along with Wayne Shorter's Supernova and Bitches Brew that led to Vitous, Shorter and Zawinul forming Weather Report in the first place.

Interesting, thanks. I've read interviews with Miroslav that make it clear that he's got an ego of his own, definitely, and I have no trouble believing that he and Zawinul would make some sparks.

I mostly know Miro from 'Now He Sings, Now He Sobs' and "Space (Infinite)" (just the track, from a comp) with John McLaughlin, Cobham, and Larry Coryell. Both are brilliant.

Always loved his bass playing with Weather Report. If I recall, I think he got his start playing in a band with Jan Hammer in Czechoslovakia, before they both came to the states.

I have a mini-LP CP version of Infinite Search, which sounds pretty cool, though I should really give it the more careful listen it deserves...

Also have a cool CD he did in the 70s with Francois "Faton" Cahen (Magma's first keyboardist) under Cahen's name called Great Winds, with Jackie DeJohnette guesting on one track.

There is a Terje Rypdal album on ECM with Vitous and DeJohnette that is also a good listen. It has that icy ECM sound, but there is some interesting interplay.

ive only heard mountain in the clouds or whatever its called - ill have to check this one out

SQUARECOATS (plsmith), Friday, 23 June 2006 15:18 (nineteen years ago)

Mountain in the Clouds and Infinite Search are the same lp. The latter was the original name on Herbie Mann's short-lived Embryo imprint distributed by Atlantic. The former was the re-released title on Atlantic after Weather Report got serious notice. It is well worth the pursuit. This is pre-funk fusion, much more closely related to In A Silent Way than it is to Head Hunters, say.

I've never heard "Purple" or "Magical Shepherd" but have always kept my eye open for them. I would gladly take directions to them if any one knew where they could be found.

I just stumbled across this on vinyl and I have to tell you that this might be the funkiest record I've heard in a long time. Sorta like "Thrust"-era Hancock funk (duh) meets psych-ed out early 70s Impulse with some passable disco stylings. The first side is pretty unbelieveable.

He played in a quartet with Steve Marcus and Sonny Sharrock on an album called Green Line. The album is OOP!! RARE!! LOOK!!, but if you can track down mp3s, it has a track called 'Mr Sheets at Night' (a standard??) which is absolutely gorgeous.
