I've been told by a slightly unreliable source that there is apparently a new Blue Nile album due out on August 30th, and its called 'High' - Can anyone confirm or deny this?

I've had a dig around and not been able to find anything to substantiate this.........

So soon, I think you're a year early.

Weird, now I suddenly recall that a Scottish musician mentioned "a new Blue Nile album" in an e-mail to me, a couple of months ago. And I thought then that he must've confused things somehow. Ha!

There was a mention of the recording of this album sometime last year on Mixing It.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 15:04 (twenty years ago)

Why does it take them so long? A drum machine, an echo chamber and a piano. And someone to play the piano.

I dunno. I love "Hats", but I could knock off a blue nile album tomorrow...

Four albums in 25 years? It must be the return of The Blue Nile

Blue Nile is not a pop group, it's a religion for slightly self-loathing commercial radio programmers who want 'Sunday Music'. An evangelical religion, unfortunately. So if this tidbit is factual, expect unctuous pieties.

Momus (Momus), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 15:33 (twenty years ago)

ouch momus. out of everything ive ever heard out of your keyboard, thats actually the statement of yours that i disagree with ! when i used to pull 60 hours a week and spend the rest of the time walking to and from work down dark city streets exhausted (see i dont drive!), "working night and day" actually had a real resonance.

Just in case you were worried, and you haven't heard it yet, the new Blue Nile album sounds EXACTLY like a Blue Nile album.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 19 July 2004 21:02 (twenty years ago)

does that mean it doesn't sound like Peace At Last? GOOD

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 19 July 2004 21:07 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, it's definitely in a Hats/Rooftops vein. In a big way.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 19 July 2004 21:23 (twenty years ago)

Some of the drum programming/machines/sounds are questionable, but i'm guessing this is a result of not having a ton of money to spend on recording. And it's not that glaring. (maybe he made it at home. It kinda sounds like it sometimes.)

that is a horrible review! oh no

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 19 July 2004 21:43 (twenty years ago)

it is a horrible review, but still a 4 star one? makes no sense.

Cozen?

jed_ (jed), Monday, 19 July 2004 21:53 (twenty years ago)

comment re 4 tracks on the albums "After those four very decent offerings"

Maybe after starting 2 classic 80s albums The Blue Nile - critics have high expectations - therefore this writer highlighted what he didn't like - but compared to most bands THe Blue Nile can still rate 4 stars? with half an album?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 19 July 2004 21:58 (twenty years ago)

His voice still sounds nice. It does sound a bit patched together. I would agree with that review that their are about 4 really strong songs. And he is definitely reaching for the vibe of the glory daze. It's for fans, basically. And I am a fan of the first two, even if I haven't listened to them in ages.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 19 July 2004 22:00 (twenty years ago)

The last song IS really underwhelming too. I kept waiting for another song to start up and then I realized the album was over.

"The last song IS really underwhelming too. I kept waiting for another song to start up and then I realized the album was over. "

That sucks. I love the way "Saturday Nite" sounds like the MOR tune playing on the radio during the apocalypse.

No release date yet on the remastered High, or the second Paul Buchanan cd mentioned last year, but in the meantime... PB guests on upcoming album by Love and Money keyboardist Paul McGeechan, available for pre-order at Rough Trade. Chris Thomson being one of the other guest singers makes this a no-listen, no-brainer buy. No Love and Money thread that I could find, so posted here.
