see, that's the thing that drove me crazy about the terry album. well, not really THE thing, but it sounds like someone to me, it's really familiar, but i can't place it. maddening.
i also prefer the terry album, though they're both outstanding.
― el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Thursday, 1 July 2004 06:23 (twenty years ago)
i'd say not as strong as either terry or jim collins - and the more-or-less sidelong experiments on the flip sides of all three discs aren't like essential - but damn nice to hear more from their camp.

also, agreed, etc. i kind of dig the primitivist drum/electrosquiggles on boots, tho.

ya, so, two new ones by this same dude/these same dudes (theoretically). tommy roundtree "jungle blood" LP and arian sample untitled or self-titled LP. roundtree didn't really do much for me (lots of piano that doesn't really work). am dling the sample right now.

links to mp3s of them (in comments) because they're apparently already gone - good to know david tibet got his free copies (must be nice), i totally missed out on both of these. fusetron apparently had one or both but i didn't notice. anyone knows where to get these say something.

Here's some info if it will help: I used to know this guy years ago when I lived in Hammond,La. He was a friend of the musician known as Damien Youth. He would sometimes collaborate with Youth back in the late 80s and early 90s. He later moved to Chicago and formed Blackberry Records sometime in the 90s. Blackberry released one Lp by Damien Youth, one by Magic Island plus a couple others. These are very rare now! I believe Magic Island is also by this artist who is neither named Terry or Jim Collins. This guy changes his name with every release so there are probably others by him floating around. I think Magic Island might have been a collaboration with D.Youth. Hope this helped a little.
(incidentally, i've heard the magic island record and it did fuck-all for me, but i'll have to look into it again.)

― Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 13:56 (seventeen years ago)
herman g neuname, be my new jim collins friend on ILX. cause they sent rog away.
― GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 14:07 (seventeen years ago)
the arian sample is much better than the roundtree. i passed on buying a copy of the latter after hearing the mp3s, it was at volcanic tongue for a couple of months but is gone now. maybe they'll send out more copies one day...

It was Rog who got me into him, but never fear, he's around. How much was it at VT? £100?
― Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 14:15 (seventeen years ago)
him/them/whatever
it was only £10.99 actually. of course i wish i'd bought a copy just to flog </dickhead>
― resolved, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 14:16 (seventeen years ago)
and luckily managed to get a copy of the sample from fusetron. although it's no great shakes, certainly weaker than the terry/jim collins entries.
― resolved, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 14:18 (seventeen years ago)
Damn, I should got it. Oh well. If they get more you can bet it jumps up in price.
― Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 14:19 (seventeen years ago)
yeah it will be 'rarity', 39.99. the roundtree is pretty crap, honestly -- easily the weakest of the records thus far. it's just jaunty piano track after jaunty piano track, with very similar notes, song structure etc. and lyrics taking things a bit too far into the ridiculous (worshiping penises in front of urinals, etc... or is that the sample... i forget)
― resolved, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 14:21 (seventeen years ago)
they seem to be getting diminishing returns as they go on...
also, "matt in toronto" says on the mutant sounds post:
Very similar, production-wise, to DAVID GRUBBS' THE THICKET from 1998... so I wonder if the Chicago hipster hoax theory holds up... Not to mention the possible intentional lyrical joke "I was born in a hole, big n' black..."
Nonetheless, this is a strong, beautiful record. Can't wait to hear the Jim Collins LP.
Oops. I was actually thinking of 2000's THE SPECTRUM BETWEEN not THE THICKET.
If you listen closely to SPECTRUM BETWEEN and the TERRY LP you'll notice a lot of similarities... word interplay, sporadic guitar, sparse drumming, production quality... The only thing noticeably different is the vocals.
Give both a listen, comparing the two. I'd like to hear what someone else thinks. -- By the way, I'm not saying IT IS David Grubbs, just that both LP's mine similar terrain.
...which, if true, might explain the giggling girl in rog's original post. anyone heard that grubbs album?
― GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 14:37 (seventeen years ago)
I might have but certainly not enough to notice anything.
― Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 14:40 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, it's definitely diminishing returns, although the A sides of the boots/snakes&remus records are quite strong.
― resolved, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 14:47 (seventeen years ago)
i meant cc/snakes&remus.. i think
― resolved, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 14:48 (seventeen years ago)
The albums are there for download in the comments section. I'll grab em.

awesome. i'm about ready to hire a private detective.
also listening to arian price right now - tons better than the roundtree.
― GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 15:22 (seventeen years ago)
I'll give em a listen now.
― Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 15:35 (seventeen years ago)

― Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 15:58 (seventeen years ago)
Listening to Rojvi for the first time right now. This is some good stuff, glad I clicked on this thread this morning. I've got nothing on the creation story, though.
― Trip Maker, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 16:46 (seventeen years ago)
I like the Jim Collins album best out of the lot.
― Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 17:00 (seventeen years ago)

Just thought I'd drop the link to my fan site on this guy in case anyone is interested: http://www.rojvi.blogspot.com
There is a new release out by this guy, a ten 7" box set (1 hour 25 minutes of music total) entitled "RT. 1 Box 320- A" (more info on that on the fan site or on www.discogs.com/artist/2455420-Robyn-Nice).
I have copies of these to trade, but only for other "Jim Collins" records. Two records for one box set (due to it being twice the length and completely undistributed at this point).
drop me a line: info @ onekindfavor dot net
