All Hail the Rolling my weekly Heavy Metal History radio show thread...

One way to pry my cold dead eyes off ILX is to give me a radio show, and Sirius done just that -- thank you, satellite scientists and inventors, for all your hard work. The show's called Bloody Roots, it airs Sundays at 2PM EST, and every week mines a different rich vein of the body metallic.

So that's the skinny, now here's the playlist for the "Dawn of the Metalheads - 1970-1974" show (July 11/04):

Black Sabbath - "Walpurgis"
Gun - "Race With the Devil"
Budgie - "In the Grip of a Tyrefitter's Hand"
Bloodrock - "Jessica"
Flower Travellin' Band - "Satori, pt. 1"
Deep Purple - "Fireball"
Necromandus - "Nightjar"
Buffalo - "Dead Forever"
Alice Cooper - "Long Way to Go"
Judas Priest - "Winter"
Lucifer's Friend - "Baby You're a Liar"
Scorpions - "Speedy's Coming"
Cathedral - "Fire"

There's a web stream, if you don't have a satellite receiver helmet or whatever.

Hope I whipped this post together before ILX goes on summer strike for two weeks...

July 18th will be a NWOBHM show. Ta ta, and hail Satan.

this looks rad.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 1 July 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

that gun song rules.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 1 July 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, that's great. i was going to try to do a 3-hour, highly subjective history of metal show a while back but lacked the ability to find a satisfying beginning or ending.

almost reason enough to get that satellite radio, i reckon.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Thursday, 1 July 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
Pffew!

Well, I've been spending a lot more time putting the show together each week than I have combing the ilx continuum. Hey, I get to see my name in small glowing orange lights on the dashboard of rental cars, plus free pretzels! Top that offer, grime pundits!

Ten weeks on, and here's what be happening:

Besides another 20 untapped genre boxes from Sound of the Beast, I've got lists for a Japanese and a Middle Eastern metal show started, but it turns out it's hard to scrounge up a theme a week. Eventually, I'll be begging for help -- or turning to far-fetched themes like an hour of Priest songs written by unsung hero Ian Hill. Or a multi-part Canadian metal special, handled province by province...

Ian Christe (Ian Christe), Thursday, 26 August 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

where's the webstream hosted at?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 26 August 2004 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Here it is:

http://www.sirius.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Sirius/CachedPage&c=ChannelAsset&cid=994446661795

But now that I know, I'll warn you -- it involves jumping through some hoops.

Gun's "Race With the Devil" is great -- there are Girlschool and Judas Priest versions, too.

EXHUMED - "Death Walks Behind You" from ANATOMY IS DESTINY

I didn't see this thread the first time - show looks great, Ian!

What's that Cathedral up there on the first playlist? Was there a 70s Cathedral?

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Friday, 27 August 2004 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks -- no, it's the modern-day google-eyed Cathedral, but that's a Crazy World of Arthur Brown cover, so...

okay, offtopic but since you played it - how is that later SxOxB stuff? i have some of their early, more hardcore, stuff and i love it...

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Sunday, 28 November 2004 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

The last couple SxOxB albums I've heard, WHAT'S THE TRUTH? and GATE OF DOOM, are both 10-12 years old, and suffer from the burdens of that era. In trying to compete with death metal, they lost a lot of the early insanity. That was a common problem -- their soul brothers in Napalm Death went through the same rough patch around that time. Still, there's a lot of simple raging depressive grind underneath the metal trappings, so they're worth a listen for what shines through. I pull them out every couple years, and with a little adjustment to my ears it all works out fine.

After Tottsuan died in the mid-90s, they found a new singer and supposedly recorded a synth album!!
