3,059 Yen?! Holy Christ that's expensive, even for a Japanese CD. Is it a double?

Vic Funk, Friday, 16 July 2004 13:49 (twenty years ago)

Alta vista says:
EYE which recently, with the intense ƒOƒ‹?[ƒ” unit of 3 ƒhƒ‰ƒ€ƒX does ƒ‰ƒCƒ” activity V where it leads XXINF REDOMS (as for the SATUREN ƒ‰ƒCƒ” ƒŒƒ| articleƒRƒ`ƒ‰!) Announces the new album in the BOREDOMS name. As for sale due date September 23rd, as for title it is undecided. Announcement of the album is ever since 1998. In addition V XXINF REDOMS at the liquid room god of wealth has planned performance on August 8th.

dleone (dleone), Friday, 16 July 2004 14:19 (twenty years ago)

dleone, what do you think the new album will sound like? i havent kept up with vooredoms/sideproject stuff...

peter smith (plsmith), Friday, 16 July 2004 14:25 (twenty years ago)

The live stuff is very trancey, less variation than, say, VCN. No guitars, obviously, just Eye (synthesizer, turntable, very little singing) and 3 drummers. However, the tales about Vooredoms recording (underwater drums?) have me pretty clueless as to how this record will sound.

dleone (dleone), Friday, 16 July 2004 14:27 (twenty years ago)

aww man - trancier still? that ruuuuuuuuuuuules. i couldnt quite parse all that info you sent, JW. is it only a jpn release on 9/23? am i gonna have to pay through the nose?

peter smith (plsmith), Friday, 16 July 2004 14:30 (twenty years ago)

This is the hard info available at most of the retailers now:

Format: CD
Released: 23 Sep 2004
Country: Japan
Discs: 1
Cat No: WPCL10119
Notes: Studio Recording

dleone (dleone), Friday, 16 July 2004 14:33 (twenty years ago)

through the nose it is. those warner jpn releases sound good, at least...

peter smith (plsmith), Friday, 16 July 2004 14:34 (twenty years ago)

3,059 Yen?! Holy Christ that's expensive, even for a Japanese CD. Is it a double?

wow, you seem to have forgot what a spectacle new boredoms releases are!

back in the day when the original super ae came out in green translucent plastic it cost about 3100 yen. the vcn box (which came out many months before the jewel box cd) was about 7800 yen. i would imagine this will be a deluxe limited packaging along the lines of the last 2 records.

the untranslated japanese text in the blurb above explains how eYe is the DJ "v" to the 3 drummers 00redoms [where 00 = infinity/turntables].

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 16 July 2004 15:04 (twenty years ago)

also: warner japan reissued the "super seeeeee!!!!!!" dvd (region 2) at a special summer price (2400 Yen) for those who are curious.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 16 July 2004 15:22 (twenty years ago)

whats the exchange rate?

(305.9 yen to the dollar, pleeeeeease...)

peter smith (plsmith), Friday, 16 July 2004 15:24 (twenty years ago)

It's about $28 or £15. So as long as shipping is sensible...

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 16 July 2004 15:30 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I got it from YesAsia with priority shipping for just under $35 - pretty normal for getting Japanese CDs.

dleone (dleone), Friday, 16 July 2004 15:32 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to get Laura to mail me a copy with a bunch of other shit.

The implication is that this is a V∞redoms record which means no Hira or Y. Sei'ichi.

sexyDancer (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 19:43 (twenty years ago)

A blimp just flew by with OOIOO to tour painted on it

Thea (Thea), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 19:53 (twenty years ago)

i wonder how this was recorded? Live looping an overdubs of Yoshimi by Eye? There's some effects on the cymbals that are some kind of delay sustain than get manipulated to fuck.... Is Eye playing the piano? I kinda figure Yoshimi would since she is more "musical" than him. Two or three drummers? :/

Is it collaged together?

Free the Bee (ex machina), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 03:14 (twenty years ago)

Wow, this is really fucking cool :)

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 03:29 (twenty years ago)

sounds like the piano playing on kila so im guessing it's yoshimi

ROBBLE

why do old people and old users of ILX such bastardos (deangulberry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 04:28 (twenty years ago)

Is this it? I mean what's here is pretty awesome, but I was expecting more. It seems to me that the release is really only two or three ideas stretched out to a forty minutes, and that seems kind of lame when compared to the relative overflow that Super AE and Vision Creation Newsun were.

MORE MORE MORE MORE MORE MORE MROE

(regardless, Seadrum is wonderful)

lemin (lemin), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 04:36 (twenty years ago)

Meh. I was expecting too much, maybe?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 06:40 (twenty years ago)

This compares pretty well to the Super Go!!!!! EP ... 2 longer songs stretched out completely.

Fuck You, Eye Yamantaka (ex machina), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 07:24 (twenty years ago)

"Seadrum" is awesome. Something about the piano reminds me of McCoy Tyner, all that sustained sound against the color of the cymbal splashes.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 12:01 (twenty years ago)

one of my friends said it reminded him of Sonny Sharrock....

Fuck You, Yamantaka Eye (ex machina), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:40 (twenty years ago)

track 2, sort of re: sharock

but, this is an EP at best...and it's also pretty WEAK.

ddb (ddb), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:49 (twenty years ago)

i dunno - sounds pretty fuckin dope to me. i admit, i wish there were 80 minutes, instead of 40 minutes, but this is a GREAT release. i cant decide yet which song i like better. beginning of seadrum might be the best part, but house of sun is really great the whole way through. also, i cant wait til the actual cd gets to me.

drums on "seadrum" dont sound looped - seems like more than just eY3.

as long as they dont wait another 4 or 5 years or whatever before doing something else, this is fine by me.

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:35 (twenty years ago)

$30 for a 40 minute album?!!? Bleh. I hope someone (gygax) will burn this for me.

Did you already buy this?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:12 (twenty years ago)

It seems to me this album has a yin/yang thing going on.

Side A: drums and piano. Pure percussion. Energy.

Side B: drones. No percussion. Peaceful and contemplative.

chëshy (chëshy f cat), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 22:03 (twenty years ago)

Seadrum = Black Woman era Sonny Sharrock meets Neu! 75 which = cool as shit

is anyone actually surprised by the "stretching out two or three ideas for 40 minutes" (let's call it MINIMALISM) direction? They do it exceptionally well, I think

Sonny, Ah!!1 (Sonny A.), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 22:56 (twenty years ago)

I AM SO GLAD I DIDNT PAY $40. FOR THIS.

I DIDNT WANT MINIMALISM SONNY, I WANTED MY SKULL FRIED.

I'm with Jed. I've always enjoyed Super AE and Vision Creation (Joanna) Newsun, but this album is incredible.

Someone educate me (S/D whatever) on non-guitar Boredoms/Vooredoms/Etc Projects. I know there are a zillion Boredoms thread here, but have they done anything that sounds similiar to Seadrum?

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 3 October 2004 03:59 (twenty years ago)

haven't heard Seadrum yet but Super Roots 6 and Puzzle Punks "Budub" are somewhat non-guitar.

The Nov. 2004 issue of the Japanese youth culture/music magazine "Studio Voice" features over 30 pages of full-color articles on Yamatsuka Eye, the various versions of the Boredoms and many off-shoots of the band. Among the features are pages of Eye's art, a Boredoms' family tree and a 300-album discography. This is one of the most extensive features ever published on Osaka's finest.
