Ian Johnson and I recorded crap that sounds like bad Earth ("is there any other kind?") and WOLF EYES. Low end bass/feedback/electronic sludge!

I think I started a jazzthrash trio. Either that or I fell down some stairs.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 16 July 2004 13:44 (twenty years ago)

Made a few groove thangs.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 16 July 2004 13:45 (twenty years ago)

My band with Sarah and a drummer recorded a four-song demo to get shows, and it sounds pretty awesome. The cleanest recording I've ever been a part of. I played Wurlitzer on one song. We came up with a band name too: the Fake Fictions.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Friday, 16 July 2004 13:55 (twenty years ago)

I invented a new note, and you get to name it.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Friday, 16 July 2004 14:02 (twenty years ago)

I'm recording an electronicish album with a good friend of mine. We've got about eight tunes written, now we just have to spend months recording, making it sound good, and figuring out how we're going to combine the programming/sequencing with recording live stuff in a technical sense (my friend who's engineering it is running Cubase on a Mac, and I know nothing about music programs for Mac). I'm totally serious and excited about it, and for the first time I'm going to look into getting it more professionally mixed/mastered when it's done. I may be asking stupid questions about these sorts of things on ILM from time to time.

Oh, I decided to change the name of one of main, ahem, "project" from 'Dumb Shoezing' back to 'Balaam' (my real second name) after a 3 year period. I feel I've moved too far away from MBV noise to really warrant the tag, evolving from a very maximal melancholy hyperkinetic production to more of a minimal fun-kay style. I'm also a lot more happier with the sound as it sounds more distinctive - you might say as distinctive as my surname.

P.S. No Balaam and the Angel jokes please.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 16 July 2004 14:06 (twenty years ago)

Been rehearsing quite regularly with my new band. They're a bit twee indie-pop, but it's funny. I far prefer being the "weird one who likes the space noises" in an indie-pop band, than fighting it out being the pop one in a dronerock band.

We've already got a gig booked, but it's not until October. We're in preproduction to record our demo/first single thing. (Which means me mucking about with Reason and Cubase and putting strange Indian Strings and windchime noises all over their nice clean arrangements.)

Ma$onic Boom (kate), Friday, 16 July 2004 14:07 (twenty years ago)

In two weeks with no ilx I have also lost my ability to write sentences.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 16 July 2004 14:07 (twenty years ago)

Started the 10000th droney cello and drums band in my city

superultramega (superultramarinated), Friday, 16 July 2004 14:16 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I played a gig at the Velvet Lounge too. There weren't many people there because of the David Murray show across town, but Fred Anderson was really cool and the ribs from the place next door were serious. I wasn't expecting my catfish to have bones in it though.

kephm, Friday, 16 July 2004 14:18 (twenty years ago)

I've been really into my cello samples lately. Cello is the new black!

Ma$onic Boom (kate), Friday, 16 July 2004 14:19 (twenty years ago)

Played Brighton 2 weeks ago - ILXORS were there. Well, one.

Upcoming dates in Worcester and Hereford next month. London again in Sept.

Dr.C, Friday, 16 July 2004 14:30 (twenty years ago)

My band went on a weekend retreat (!) to Michigan. Some dude rented us his summer house for really cheap, and we started four new songs while we were there. We also got to jump on his backyard trampoline. (I did this while blasting the Animal Collective from the stereo in his shed. It ruled.)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 16 July 2004 14:32 (twenty years ago)

Get a gig at the Brixton Windmill, Dr. C! Then I can just walk there!

Ma$onic Boom (kate), Friday, 16 July 2004 14:32 (twenty years ago)

Sorry Dr C, I completely forgot about that - tell us if you're playing again - did it go well?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 16 July 2004 14:32 (twenty years ago)

I programmed some spacey sounds into my proteus 2000 module, played w/my new wiard "noise ring" module, and farted about with this mediocre space music piece I wrote in atari cubase, until it sounded really cosmic, and not mediocre anymore, so I was happy.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 16 July 2004 14:41 (twenty years ago)

3 songs (1 spaz techno thing, 1 druggy zep sounding thing, and 1 druggy beatles sounding thing)

dleone (dleone), Friday, 16 July 2004 14:57 (twenty years ago)

We HAVE got a gig at the Windmill - but I'm not playing that one, as I'm on holiday in France at the time, and so I'm not telling anyone about it! I think the next London date will be in Sept at either the Bull and Gate or the Half Moon.

Chewshabadoo - Brighton was great! What looked like a horrible venue turned out to be really good - lots of people in, not a bad sound and a really good response. We had people at the bar singing our songs after we'd played which was amazing!

hey - good to hear you're doing something Kate.

dr.c, Friday, 16 July 2004 15:01 (twenty years ago)

Bah, I'm not going to the Windmill if you aren't there, Dr. C. What do you have to go and have a holiday for, anyway?

Ma$onic Boom (kate), Friday, 16 July 2004 15:03 (twenty years ago)

made a crappy noise song called "shithead".

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 16 July 2004 15:16 (twenty years ago)

Good - we'll be rubbish without me. (If you see what I mean)

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 16 July 2004 15:18 (twenty years ago)

~25 minutes of pretty/scorched cobblestoned-motorik:

3 keyboards, 2 performers, 1 female vox

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 16 July 2004 15:19 (twenty years ago)

may (?) be released under the name "bbqq".

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 16 July 2004 15:19 (twenty years ago)

my band came very close to breaking up, and we had a meeting to talk someone out of quitting. and one or more people have been nearly 2 hours late to the 2 practices we've had since then.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 16 July 2004 15:20 (twenty years ago)

xpost: or "the peloton"

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 16 July 2004 15:20 (twenty years ago)

1) Started writing new album with band.

2) Played show with said band which nobody saw.

3) Purchased new computer for making music.

4) Made music.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 16 July 2004 15:31 (twenty years ago)

i tried using a fruityloops beat to impress a girl, i don't think it worked.

my band got a new singer

astroblaster (astroblaster), Friday, 16 July 2004 15:45 (twenty years ago)

"i tried using a fruityloops beat to impress a girl, i don't think it worked."

that soooo does not work (i've tried):-(

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 16 July 2004 15:52 (twenty years ago)

yeah you at least need logic gold to get past first base

Barnaby (Barnaby), Friday, 16 July 2004 16:27 (twenty years ago)

1. Played the entirety of 'War Pigs' on guitar, unacompanied, in front of an open window;
2. Practiced 'Fairies Wear Boots,' especially the slide octave part;
3. Re-learned 'Poor Tom' in open-C.

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 16 July 2004 16:31 (twenty years ago)

I played a couple few gigs with the Eno-emo band, a party with the hippy dancejampop duo (where we led a rowdy happy hippy singalong to Talking Heads' "Road to Nowhere"), shouted a bunch of expletives into a microphone for a song called "Song My Mom Should Never Hear", ripped off Tom Waits without thinking about it at least twice, and discovered that my friend's minifridge makes for a great keyboard throne (wot can hold a shit ton of beer in it).

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 16 July 2004 18:02 (twenty years ago)

I like how I can read the first line of a post and automatically know that it's nickalicious.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Friday, 16 July 2004 18:05 (twenty years ago)

have you forgotten jess's hippy dancejampop band, strongohookah?

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 16 July 2004 18:09 (twenty years ago)

Shade is finally available through Worthy (http://www.worthyrecords.com). The cover art looks a lot better in real life. Mostly the last two weeks have been spent doing theory courses downtown, finally catching up on some classical history and harmony stuff that I've heretofore managed to avoid. Also, I booked two Music Gallery recording sessions in August and have a daytime show booked there for December. Er, I've been practising Reginald Smith-Brindle's "El Polifemo de Oro" a lot.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 17 July 2004 03:32 (twenty years ago)

The band I was in that plays shows irregularly was going to play a show but the venue canceled so we got drunk.

An mp3 of our Crowning Achievement has found a semi-permanent online residence. I'd be pleased if you downloaded it. I'm really proud of it. It's called "Factory Farmer's Daughter".

Sonny A. (Keiko), Saturday, 17 July 2004 22:00 (twenty years ago)

Negotiating with a US label. They like my beats, but they're really not sure about my cookie monster vocals - they find them a bit 'gutteral and in your face'.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Saturday, 17 July 2004 22:25 (twenty years ago)

1st space dust show in a year (wunderbar, lyttelton, w/ shocking pinks, it was pretty good
also started recording international telepaths vol 2, it's gonna rule

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Sunday, 18 July 2004 17:33 (twenty years ago)

come back to the usa duane!

gygax! (gygax!), Sunday, 18 July 2004 17:59 (twenty years ago)

Practiced. Played a gig. Got stoned in a tent.

Ben Dot (1977), Sunday, 18 July 2004 21:25 (twenty years ago)

we finished mixing 6 songs, with a further 9 to be done over the next week and a half. then the recording process is completely over.

are 'friends' electricsound? (electricsound), Sunday, 18 July 2004 21:57 (twenty years ago)

I learned how to play "Powerhouse" on the piano.

Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 18 July 2004 21:59 (twenty years ago)

I played 21 Beatles songs for the soundtrack of a play. I got £75 and a small army of unnerving jailbait admirers as a result.

I wrote a synth bit that sounds like Blade Runner.

Lupus Curtsturgeon (Ferg), Sunday, 18 July 2004 22:43 (twenty years ago)

writing 2 new songs and new band on track again now with added bass player

hellbaby (hellbaby), Sunday, 18 July 2004 22:49 (twenty years ago)

Is heckling counted as doing something productive?

Sasha (sgh), Sunday, 18 July 2004 22:51 (twenty years ago)

Yes. xpost

I have been playing my 5 string guitar (getting closer to being able to actually string together multiple 'chords') and I fucked around on a piano for a while. I am also learning how to read music.

artdamages (artdamages), Sunday, 18 July 2004 22:54 (twenty years ago)

Played my band's 10th Anniversary show. Forgot to tell Haikunym about it. Got blitzed and played an afterbar that started at 4:30. Played a wedding in Milwaukee the next day, and ate amazing chicken. Started recording my electronic project today, and took four hours to record and loop eight bars of live drums. Received lesson in how to make loops in Cubase.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 July 2004 00:10 (twenty years ago)

i played a solo set as Lucy Lurex at Arc. then me and duane started recording our second album.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Monday, 19 July 2004 01:17 (twenty years ago)

Currently recording mangled electronic covers of pop songs, and using the debris from my extended jamming as inspiration for original songs. So far I've done "Computer Love", "Dancing Queen", and "Bizarre Love Triangle".

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 19 July 2004 01:39 (twenty years ago)

gygax i don't think they would let me back in the USA on account of my convictions (you know : my beliefs)

un. or ill. u., Monday, 19 July 2004 07:05 (twenty years ago)

Mashed up "People Are People" and "Confusion". Chuckled.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Monday, 19 July 2004 13:15 (twenty years ago)

Live dates are in the works. I'll let you know where the Lynskey band is appearing as soon as I know.

Gribowitz (Lynskey), Monday, 19 July 2004 16:11 (twenty years ago)

my band, Maps of Norway, finished our 3 song demo...our friend recorded it with a portable minidisc 8-track and it sounds really nice considering that the practice space we recorded it in is a nightmare....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 19 July 2004 16:15 (twenty years ago)

That's a cool track, Sonny. What do you play?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 16:52 (twenty years ago)

I play guitar, thanks a lot!

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 16:59 (twenty years ago)
