going once, going twice...

broken twig, Wednesday, 21 July 2004 02:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Love it.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 06:28 (twenty-one years ago)

me too. is it getting played one the radio? i only know it from mp3.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 07:22 (twenty-one years ago)

also, am i right to think that the garage version is the proper one, and the 4x4 is a remix? cos the garage version's much better.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 07:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i like it too! i saw the 2step version on MTV Hits, so I guess it's the proper one. but the tune is such a weird occurence at this point in time - anything know anything about the backstory? was this some sorta underground hit, or did someone just decide that poppy 2step was absent from the charts long enough that it could sound fresh again?

Mind Taker, Wednesday, 21 July 2004 11:04 (twenty-one years ago)

It's been rinsed on pirates for a while now. garage still lives!

broken twig, Thursday, 22 July 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I've only heard the "2 step" version.

broken twig, Thursday, 22 July 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

All chart music should be poppy garage.

broken twig, Thursday, 22 July 2004 23:09 (twenty-one years ago)

this morning was the first time i'd heard it on radio 1. nothing better than waking up to summery 2-step on the radio. i miss 2001!

pete b. (pete b.), Friday, 23 July 2004 07:20 (twenty-one years ago)

It feels so apt that I've just heard this for the first time, waking up for the first time in days to sun shining instead of drizzle.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 23 July 2004 07:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll say it now because I think I can...SINGLE. OF. THE. YEAR.

I just want you to know oh oh
That I think our love will grow yeah yeah

Baby cakes
You just don't know, know
How I I
I like it down low
And I just want you to know
That I think I love will grow
Will take it step by step
Because I'm not something you own [x2]

Confused don't know what I'm feeling
Confused relationships without meaning
In the mist I can see it gleaming
Time to wake up and stop the dreaming
Coz your my lil Baby cakes
And I know you got what it takes
The way you make me feel
The way that I am
when you talk to you friends
And you call me your man
Im gonna tell you right now
That I appriciate it
Your the one for me
Your the real S**t
You was right there from the start
When I was lost you helped me find my mark
Tell her I gotta thank you thank you
Through the bad times I jus picture me and you
With our fun time whether funs loaded
There's just one thing I want you to know

I just want you to know oh oh
That I think our love will grow yeah yeah

Baby cakes
You just don't know, know
How I I
I like it down low
And I just want you to know
That I think I love will grow
Will take it step by step
Because I'm not something you own [x2]

Lovin every minute
Just you and me
And I'm still dreaming
You'd be my baby
Maybe there's a possibility
We grow old together live happily
And your grave
Bring out the tiger in me
He says do i never need cursing me
Your the man for me
The one who thinks what will life be like
If our eyes never met
And they say it's a song for everyone
At the first sight you know it's love
See the person and you can't be hostile
Coz you got butterflies in ya belly
That's why I like a different dimension
Coz you can't help it but feel the affections
Sexual tention physical attractions
Instant flip flirtation actions

I just want you to know oh oh
That I think our love wil grow yeah yeah

Baby cakes
You just don't know, know
How I I
I like it down low
And I just want you to know
That I think I love will grow
Will take it step by step
Because I'm not something you own [x2]

I I got to know [x4]

The way you look at me
Yeah you pull me closer
Our bodies together
Under the cover
Soft kisses
With ya hands all over
If I have to cry
Then ya cry on my shoulder
Can't get enough
When you loosen my neck
Goes down to my belly
Carress my breast
Well ship your body
Like you were a godess
Your the man for me
Need 2 gimmie the best
Your the number one for me
And it's no contest
For Any other man
Who got no interest
Loving you
Whenever it's wrong or right
I'm thinking of you
Everyday and night
People don't get the wrong idea
It's about us so don't interfere
The way you look at me
Cakes its gotta be
When your out
When your stood right next to me

I just want you to know oh oh
That I think I'll have a go yeah yeah [x4]

Baby cakes
You just don't know, know
How I I
I like it down low
And I just want you to know
That I think I love will grow
Will take it step by step
Because I'm not something you own [x2]

broken twig, Friday, 23 July 2004 07:57 (twenty-one years ago)

remember that thread a few months ago complaining that 2004 had no summer anthems yet? we've found it!

pete b. (pete b.), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it may have come about as the result of a bet, just like that no way no way song. it's appalling

Porkpie (porkpie), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I love it.

broken twig, Friday, 23 July 2004 08:18 (twenty-one years ago)

it's the new flowers, easily.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 23 July 2004 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i am downloading this as we speak and i couldnt be more excited.

we played the mis-teeq "let's knock together a comp and try to break american on the back of catwoman" record the other day at work and it's amazing how exciting 2-step is even at its cheesiest and tail end of relevance. (and how much better it is than 90% of grime.) (*ducks*)

jess, Friday, 23 July 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

it's my favourite song...ever

Jay G (jaybob79), Friday, 23 July 2004 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
"sounds like it fell through a hole in 2001" :: It's like grime never happened! I love it.

fernando, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

ohpleaseohpleasegoto#1

Paul (scifisoul), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

again, this fits my contention that all the big hits this summer have been sort of damp and drizzly

jess, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 01:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Damp and drizzly? This song is so so sunny though!

The girl singer is really, really, really short.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 23 August 2004 10:25 (twenty-one years ago)

it makes me realize that i haven't heard nearly enough early 2k 2step. someone send me a comp.

m. (mitchlnw), Monday, 23 August 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

The rappings terrible, but I like the chorus a lot. It reminds me a lot of 'Sweet Like Chocalate'. Not as good, though.

Wooden (Wooden), Monday, 23 August 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

actually what this reminds me of (in 'mood' as opposed to sonically) is Lumidee - it's got that same sparse teenager-singing-amaeurishly-into-hairbrush-in-bedroom feel to it.

also, it reminded me how much I love "Flowers".

God, I adore this song.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

it's not sunny. it's quite dark, cynical and guarded if you listen to the lyrics properly. the slightly out of tune vocals fit the words reallyt well; sounds sweet on the face of things but listen close and it's all a bit off-kilter. to me this song is like milk that's just about to curdle but is still okay to drink, which is interesting considering the transitionary phase the music was in when it was made. still, in 2004 it's my single of the year with a bullet.

stelfox, Wednesday, 25 August 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

the lumidee comparison is pretty immediate, and it's not a bad one to make either coz i loved uh oh, too.

stelfox, Wednesday, 25 August 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

This song is terrible.

scg, Wednesday, 25 August 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree, and the video is worse, I'm still convinced it's an industry prank like No way No way.

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

it's not. you are both wrong.

stelfox, Wednesday, 25 August 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm unconvinced but I'm not against it per se. I think my love affair with pop-2-step was too deep and intense at the time for me to reinitiate it so soon. More pop-grime plz?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

"Like Lumidee" OTM.
Is this getting US play? I'm only familiar cuzza the internet and much appreciative.

Looking like a Summer 04 Jam winner.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 29 August 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

this is like "sweet like chocolate" played on a gameboy

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 29 August 2004 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i know that sounds like i mean it as a compliment, but i don't

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 29 August 2004 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i was so sure you'd love this, jess.

m. (mitchlnw), Sunday, 29 August 2004 08:55 (twenty-one years ago)

It's very hard for me to remove the weight of history with this track, to here it without immediately thinking of ten or twenty slightly better pop 2-step tracks. I'd love to know what it is people specifically like about this tune in particular so that I could lock into it. or is it just a case of it standing in as a representative for *all* fragile great pop 2-step?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 29 August 2004 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

It's like Aqua was pulled through a 2 step hole. I can't even put into words how much I hate the vocals.

jesus nathalie (nathalie), Sunday, 29 August 2004 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't hate it, but it just sound so cheap, whereas 2-step was never about sounding cheap. (until O&N, where you could argue was the beginning of "garage rap" and hence grime.) (which is why i don't think it's from 2001: it sounds like 2-step made by grime kids.) (and not twisted in any way by grime.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 29 August 2004 10:29 (twenty-one years ago)

the whole thing is terrible. aimed at 15 year olds and younger. lyrically, it's the same as craig david's fill me in. not the same tune, but same form. go on, try singing one over the other. then again, best not. that was shite too.

it's sugary nursery rhyme twee pop. pop can be so much better.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Sunday, 29 August 2004 10:31 (twenty-one years ago)

(but frenchbloke, you did that "fill me in" - "emerge" mashup! are you saying you only liked one half of that combination? or are you in fact sonof and not frenchbloke)

m. (mitchlnw), Sunday, 29 August 2004 10:42 (twenty-one years ago)

WTF? "Fill Me In" was fucking brilliant.

Dunno Jess, I remember a bit of cheap garage too ("With A Little Bit Of Luck" for example) but I agree that if anything all the best pop 2-step was deleriously overproduced and stuffed with dazzling sonic hooks - see "Flowers" obv but also "Girls Like Us", "Buggin", "Poison", "Call It Fate", "Something In Your Eyes", "Got Myself Together", "Moving Too Fast"... the list goes on.

This sounds more like one of those late-era R&B bootlegs - esp. something like Phase One's "Nicole's Groove" (prod. by Wiley!) - where the pop section was really thin and skeletal because you were just waiting to get to the bass section anyway. Only this is more pop and no bass.

I'm reminded though of when "Has It Come To This?" came out and Ambrose was very sceptical of it because of its glossy 2-step production, and Tom suggested (and I'm no doubt twisting his words here) that maybe being "too close" to garage as a genre made it hard to see how "Has It Come To This" worked on so many non-garage levels. I wonder if I'm blinded to some of the qualities and/or uniqueness of "Babycakes" because for such a long stretch this sort of music was my life. I've never cared for any single style of music as much as I did for this stuff so it's hard to get any sort of perspective on it now.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 29 August 2004 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post that mashup was inspired! Totally saved "Emerge" for me. I also wouldn't be surprised if Darren Hayes partly based his new single on it.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 29 August 2004 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i was about to say that i fear this is a case of people having been so close to 2step's peaks that they can't see the cakes for the babies, or something, but tim just put it much better.

m. (mitchlnw), Sunday, 29 August 2004 10:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i hear "little bit of luck" more as 'minimal' than 'cheap', but i see your meaning, tim.

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 29 August 2004 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i only used fill me in because it fits. not because i liked it.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Sunday, 29 August 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Please stop, I don't want to hear you ruin your own art!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 29 August 2004 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

it's not art. it's tat

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Sunday, 29 August 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

hey! i hated on 'has ti come to this' because of its lack of glossy 2-step production. it sounded emaciated tinny, a pallid imitation of garage. Skinner used garage for his own ends, just as other tunes on the album picked out other genres to be gutted. This is all very well, btu the end result sounds washed out. normally, i like pale pop versions of underground musics, (eg miker g and his holiday rap, trip to trumpton), but you couldnt dance to 'has it come to this', and that pissed me off.

it should be on a MOS comp: "chilled euphoric garage, digitally mixed by matt dareydj EZ, along with manitoba....

anyway this has nothign to do with babycakes. I have no opinion on that really. Pretty weird that it did so well. meanwhile, what happened to 'Stand up tAll'?

*looka t radio1 site* blimey it got to number 10!!!!

ambrose (ambrose), Sunday, 29 August 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Y'know, as a Yank who NEVER got into the 2-step scene or the club scene or ANYTHING like that and barely can follow what the hell you're talking about; I gotta tell you: this is scads better than our bubblegum.

I'm beginning to think we should farm out half of our pop hits to ya'll Yurpeanz.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

If you like "Babycakes" search old 2-step compilations stat!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Fair enough. I'm accepting suggestions and donations.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:36 (twenty-one years ago)

where'd broken twig go?

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 30 August 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
Just reviving a 2 year old topic...:)

Big-J, Thursday, 11 May 2006 11:57 (nineteen years ago)

Fair dos. I keep forgetting about this track. Do you suppose it is a #1 that most people will not remember so well even if they liked it at the time?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 11 May 2006 13:20 (nineteen years ago)

Jess OTM re/ comarisons to "Sweet Like Chocolate", though "Sweet Like Chocolate" >>> "Babycakes"

steal compass, drive north, disappear (tissp), Thursday, 11 May 2006 13:23 (nineteen years ago)

never liked "Sweet Like Chocolate", "Doolally" was much better
I'd rate "Babycakes" between em

if you like "Babycakes" check Delinquent feat Kcat - "My Destiny", which is similarly gentle/sweet, though more subtle

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 11 May 2006 13:46 (nineteen years ago)

er make that Doolally - "Straight From The Heart" (same blokes as Chocolate: Shanks & Bigfoot)

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 11 May 2006 13:49 (nineteen years ago)

Oh man, you're right i think that 'Straight From The Heart' was better than Shonky Bigfoot. I need to hear that again.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 11 May 2006 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

i managed to convince myself they were called "3 in 1" the other day. fascinating

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Thursday, 11 May 2006 14:05 (nineteen years ago)

3 In 1 was a guy who did edits of big club tracks like 'Cafe Del Mar'. Maybe that's where you got it from in your miiiind?
