ATP Camber Sands Event DEC O4

So I'm on the southern records site checking out the deal with the shellac uk tour at the end of november and, in addition to the dates in dublin, Edinburgh and London, there's one listed as 'Fri Dec 3 2004 All tomorrows parties Camber sands'.

Does anyone know anything about this?

neil, Saturday, 17 July 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Guess not.

neil, Monday, 19 July 2004 07:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I wanna know too!

useless internet co-habitants

neil, Monday, 19 July 2004 09:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I could have attempted to ask around for you but you sound like a bit of a rude cunt so I don't think I will.

Talking of cunts, well done to Planet Sound, the Teletext-based music news service, which reports that a new Shellac album is released in December to coincide with the UK dates. By all accounts it should be an event to compare with last year's MBV comeback album and the Big Black reformation dates they also reported

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 19 July 2004 10:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Fair enough.

neil, Monday, 19 July 2004 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

DJ Mencap could you possibly ask around for someone who isn't a rude cunt? Or, failing that, me?

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll try... might see a knowledgeable person tonight

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Has anyone managed to find anything out about this yet?

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 22 July 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't find anything out about it other than what is on the southern site. It is perhaps, a little much putting on 6 festivals in the space of 2 years (including the 3 next april), all with different lineups. While I applaud what they are doing, I can't help but feel that every last penny is being wrung out of my pockets and that the specialness of the event will be somewhat diluted.

hmmm (hmmm), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

It gets stranger and stranger..

There's a rumour going round that only the Throbbing Gristle and Vincent Gallo weekends are going ahead next year, and the Chapman Brothers one is being rearranged... which would kinda make sense if that's the weekend that Shellac are playing, but moving it eariler

Camber Sands in the winter would be horrible though.

jellybean (jellybean), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh dear, that was the weekend I was planning on going to, pending line-up confirmations.

hmmm (hmmm), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I wouldn't mind it if they moved it earlier (except that it would be freezing in the chalets) because I wouldn't have been able to make any of the ones that are next year anyway.

jellybean (jellybean), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Lucky old you then! It will be amazingly cold there in December. They should do it in high season. Surely they must make more money from ATP than from a regular sold out weekend as the place is full, the festival is paying for using the site and all the redcoats are not involved in providing the entertainment. Plus I imagine some people buy beer.

hmmm (hmmm), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I believe the Chapmans one has definitely been postponed, and the Shellac thing hasn't actually been confirmed yet. Southern website in getting all excited and shooting their listings bolt shockah

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

oh great.

more fantastic organisational skillz from foundation

jellybean (jellybean), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

The ATP official site does still say (from the June notice before the whole thing went into hibernation) that ATP UK and Pacific events were coming "soon". From June, April is not "soon". December almost is.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think anything's Foundation's fault Jill - Southern probably weren't supposed to put this in their listings when there's nothing to go on, but if they took it down webmongs would probably just fuss even more. Apart from the RE:TG thing last year their organisational skillz are pretty on point, all things considered. For the UK events at any rate

pete badmusik (pete badmusik), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Basically all this has been posted already, but from insound.com:

News ATP’s Christmas present to YOU!
The date: 3rd August 2004
Artists: Slint All Tomorrow’s Parties have announced a special Christmas festival to take place between 3rd and 5th of December at Camber Sands.
The event, delightfully named ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’, is to be curated by Dinos and Jake Chapman who, as yet, have only confirmed one band: Slint - yes all four members responsible for the masterpiece known as 'Spiderland', woo!

The rest of the line-up is expected to be announced soon and tickets are now on sale! Run my children, run.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not back on the website though. If I was Insound I'd be wary about getting people too excited. And If I was ATP I'd REALLY make sure I don't fuck this up

DJ*Mencap, Wednesday, 4 August 2004 08:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Agreed. Bearing in mind Foundation's history (and I know there's only been one or two huge fuckups, but their general performance is poor) and the current lack of info, I have stood down to mildly excited awaiting confirmation. When I will be officially excited again.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

WTF? The entire ATP site is now password protected? Either there's a large update imminent, or someone is trying to close the stable door after the horse has bolted.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

sort of official denial from the drownedinsound site:

"Back tracking from a previous news story (now removed), we at DiS would like to set the story straight and inform you that Slint are definitely NOT confirmed for All Tomorrow’s Parties this Christmas.
There will indeed be a special Christmas festival to take place between 3rd and 5th of December at Camber Sands, but details of bands playing are yet to be confirmed. It does however, seem unlikely that Slint will be playing.

We do know that the event, delightfully named ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’, is to be curated by Dinos and Jake Chapman.

The line-up is expected to be announced very soon, and Drowned in Sound have been promised an exclusive list of all those playing first, so stay tuned.

We certainly don’t condone wandering through other people’s servers and taking half-formed information."

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Why do they think it unlikely?

And reading information directly off ATP's website is hardly 'wandering through other people’s servers and taking half-formed information'

mei (mei), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

From a reasonably reputable source, I've heard that Slint have definitely been approached, and that they certainly haven't yet said no - but everything else remain unconfirmed. Previously, I think David Pajo has said that reforming Slint isn't out of the question, but that they wouldn't do it just for the money, so make of that what you will...

Jason J, Wednesday, 4 August 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

That sentence is classic. It's like they see the whole internet as some kind of illicit hacking activity.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

it's all a conspiracy!!!!

i thought hacking, porn, and sharing grime mp3s was all people used the interweb for though, no?

pete badmusik (pete badmusik), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The drownedinsound forums have a posting from a guy who claims either himself or through someone in his band to have spoken to Albini and Southern. Albini confirmed Shellac were playing, southern said Bob W told them Shellac were playing.

So that's at least one confirmed band.

But I'm holding off until I get a Slint confirmation, or a pile of other good bands, since I'm going to one fo the Scala nights.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

that Shellac thing's been confirmed for ages anyway.. it's been up along with the other tour dates on the Southern website

jellybean (jellybean), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

That would be how this thread started.

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, my point was that although it was on the Southern site, the event was unconfirmed and you couldn't buy tickets for the Shellac gig so even that was dubious. Something appearing on a website without formal confirmation isn't always 100% true - otherwise we wouldn't be here talking about Slint now, would we?

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Well done, then, to Drowned In Sound, ATP and Southern's webmongs, all of whom have managed to scale uncharted heights of fuckwittery over a day or so

DJMencap0))), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

it's kind of hard to get enthused about shellac playing when they've already played 9 sets there in the past 4 years...

officer pupp, Thursday, 5 August 2004 04:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Worse than that, it's 15 sets... (2 a day the 7 days they've curated + 1)

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 5 August 2004 05:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Errr no... I'm pretty sure it's six sets. One in 2000, three in 2002 and two this year

DJMencap0))), Thursday, 5 August 2004 08:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, no, you're right, they only did one set the year they curated. But there were two weekends remember, so the original 9 was right.

I am stupid.

http://www.playlouder.com/news/+decemberspawneda/

DECEMBER SPAWNED A MONSTER
Jake & Dinos reveal their ATP
06 Sep 2004

After much specualation, details are emerging about December's Jake and Dinos Chapman-curated All Tomorrow's Parties.

The three day festival, called The Nightmare Before Christmas, runs from the 3rd to 5th of December and will take place in ATP's customary abode of Camber Sands Holiday Camp in East Sussex.

Headlining will be Throbbing Gristle and Mercury Rev, with other confirmed acts including The Fall, Peaches, Shellac, Lightning Bolt, Wolf Eyes and Violent Femmes. Sounds cracking, doesn't it?

There'll be no liquers for your hairy-eared uncle at Christmas, mind, as you'll need to fork out £120 for a ticket - as usual though, this includes accommodation in one of Camber Sands' luxury apartments. Tickets will be onsale from www.atpfestival.com, as soon as they fix it.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 6 September 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Presumably this means the TG April event is cancelled?

But this may well be worth braving Camber in December for, if this is actually true.

Hogan promised on the drownedinsound boards (4th August) that it would all be announced "in the next two weeks". And three weeks after that deadline...?

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 6 September 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

yahoo/ dotmusic have more info:

http://uk.news.launch.yahoo.com/dyna/article.html?a=/040906/340/f20ka.html&e=l_news_dm

Headline acts already confirmed for the weekend of December 3-5 include Mercury Rev and industrial music pioneers Throbbing Gristle.

Other artists set to perform include Shellac, Peaches, The Fall, Violent Femmes, The Minutemen, Carl Craig, Wolf Eyes and Lightning Bolt.

There will also be rooms dedicated to Manchester's Skam Records and Austria's Mego Records.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 6 September 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

LFO and Little Wings confirmed for December, plus a certain little event next year confirmed:

12th October 2004
SLINT REFORMS TO CURATE ATP 2005

All Tomorrow's Parties are very proud to announce that legendary Louisville, KY musical pioneers Slint will surprise and delight fans by reuniting to perform at and curate the first weekend of All Tomorrow's Parties of 2005, on February 25th, 26th and 27th at Camber Sands Holiday Centre, East Sussex, UK.

Core Slint members Brian McMahan, David Pajo and Britt Walford will be selecting an eclectic line-up for the weekend and will themselves be playing music from their albums "Tweez" and "Spiderland" as well as the posthumous untitled ten-inch single. Soon after the 1991 release of the acclaimed "Spiderland," Slint disbanded but their remarkable music went on to inspire and influence an ever-widening legion of fans. Now, for the first time since their separation, Slint returns for this very special edition of All Tomorrow's Parties.
line-up details will be announced in the coming months.

I really love Spiderland, but experience has taught me that reunions are never a good idea.

A Saturday Evening club night hosted by Mego Records sounds absolutely terrifying, I must admit

Jason J, Monday, 8 November 2004 14:50 (twenty years ago)

Worth remembering that they announced the "virtually complete" lineup for the April one which turned out to be a long way from viurtually complete. If, on the other hand, this is what they call £120 worth of entertainment they can go fuck themselves, as they have no moral high ground whatsoever to stand on over Mean Fiddler and their cronies. Still, I'm optimistic that I'm being pessimistic

DJ Mencap0))), Monday, 8 November 2004 14:57 (twenty years ago)

The Friday is looking pretty poor with a lack of TBC's. There's not 16 hours of music over 2 stages there. Are they not opening till 6pm or something?

It's great quality so far, but not nearly enough acts, even with 3 TBC's. I'd hope they get some good DJ's in the pub in addition to the 'club' like they normally do as well.
