Safe as Milk is just an outstanding mid-sixties R&B/rock 'n' roll album.

Trout Mask Replica has been my favorite album for a while, so I was wondering if Safe as Milk was also worth checking out. Thanks.

Public Image Ltd. - Second Edition
Sonic Youth - Evol

The PiL is my favorite of theirs...the blueprint for a lot of stuff that's en vogue right now. The SY album is sort of a transitional affair. Chaos molded into song forms.

Captain Beefheart - Safe as Milk - I have no opinion on this.
Mr. Bungle - Disco Volante - Interesting in spots, but ultimately just a curio -- stick with their first album (or better yet the Ladd-Frith cassettes)
Public Image Ltd. - Second Edition - Staggeringly great, but probably not right for every occaission.
Sonic Youth - Evol - I prefer Bad Moon Rising, me, but y'know......actually, why bother listening to Sonic Youth -- old or new -- ever again?

Because they're my second favorite band...

Then you should love EVOL.

Before a friend's performance a couple of weeks ago, he played a tape which included "Radio4" from Second Edition/Metal Box. Although it's not really indicative of the general (amazing) tone of most of the rest of the album, it was one of the more surreal moments I've had in the last few months......the ditty dialed way up seemed to turn the loud, smoky bar into some kinda retro-futuristic post-funeralparlor for four and a half minutes. I remembered having a similar feeling hearing it conclude my first listen of the album 24 years ago.

Mr. Bungle - Disco Volante

Public Image Ltd. - Second Edition

"this dble album version of the classic metal box suffers soundwise and gimmick wise in relation to the original release."

Sonic Youth - Evol

hard for me to stake a position on this that doesn't suffer from my own nostalgia

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 18 July 2004 05:36 (twenty-one years ago)

safe as milk, evol and metal box/second edition are the best album of beefheart, sonic youth and p.i.l. no more no less

Mr. Bungle probably has 100 times as many punch in/out edits than the other 3 combined.
