Oh my god, I've been listening to Belle and Sebastian and it's making *sense* to me. Somebody shoot me.

Ma$onic Boom (kate), Monday, 19 July 2004 08:51 (twenty-one years ago)

You need more revenge in your mix.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 19 July 2004 08:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not really interested in revenge right now. I mean, it wasn't that bad a breakup. Speaking in High Fidelity terms, it's not even top five worst breakups ever.

I'm more into, "wow, I'm kinda hurting and I feel sad. I want music that will let me cry and make me feel better about being sad and hurting."

Ma$onic Boom (kate), Monday, 19 July 2004 09:02 (twenty-one years ago)

rainer maria "situation:relation"

purple patch (electricsound), Monday, 19 July 2004 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

God, I love music so much. Music *is* more real when I'm alone. I can't believe I stopped caring about music for so long, that really was a bad sign. Music is everything, music *is* emotion.

Ma$onic Boom (kate), Monday, 19 July 2004 09:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Ohmigod, Busted's "Over Now" just came on, and I always thought it was stupid and overblown and dumb, cause I hate ballads, but OH MY GOD, IT JUST HITS ME IN MY HEART RIGHT NOW. What a good song. It's so perfect.

Ma$onic Boom (kate), Monday, 19 July 2004 09:29 (twenty-one years ago)

A few more good 'uns for breakups:

1. Arthur Russell - "A little lost"
2. Rotary Connection - "Want you to know" (the weird thing about this song is that if you listen to it during the relationship, you think the word is "make" but it's only after the breakup that you realise it's "made")
3. Gillian Welch - "Wayside/Back in time"
4. Allison Krauss - "Forget about it"
5. Jeff Buckley - "Hallelujah"

Jacob (Jacob), Monday, 19 July 2004 09:31 (twenty-one years ago)

my personal fav

eels - it's a motherfucker

but ap[art from that my minds a blank

this song's *just* for you, then: hidden cameras - "music is my boyfriend"

willem (willem), Monday, 19 July 2004 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

no spiritualized?

koogs (koogs), Monday, 19 July 2004 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha, music *is* my boyfriend. I just put that in the letter that went with the CD. Some girls can't survive if they're not in a relationship. I can't survive if I'm not in a *BAND*.

No Spiritualized. I just couldn't handle that. Besides, I think a lot of SPZ breakup stuff is pretty cheesey. I prefer they're happy crush stuff, actually.

Ma$onic Boom (kate), Monday, 19 July 2004 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i sppent ages crafting a breakup tape that would win back an ex a few years back but never sent it her - i kind of realised i was better off, by the time i'd perfected it. but here are some songs that were on there...

1. Beachwood Sparks - 'by your side'
2. I Believe (when i fall in love it will be forever) - Stevie Wonder
3. we'll be together again - ray charles
4. i'm still in love with you (live) - thin lizzy
5. two headed boy (the final version of it) - neutral milk hotel
6. till i die (long version) - beach boys
7. hot burrito #1 - belly
8. in your eyes - peter gabriel
9. golden boy - res
10. the posies - will you ever ease your mind?
11. someday we'll be together - the supremes
12. blue cirque - the bellrays
13. i've been loving you too long to stop now - irma thomas
14. the turning point - jimmy holliday
15. grand drive - wrong notes

stevie (stevie), Monday, 19 July 2004 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to erase the Buckley version of Hallelujah from existance.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 19 July 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

'Lover, You Should Have Come Over' is a better recording, and a better breakup song too.

stevie (stevie), Monday, 19 July 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

You need some revenge in there, screw all that whining indie crap:

1. Unsuccessfully Coping With the Natural Beauty of Infidelity
2. Untermensch
3. Xero Tolerance
4. Prelude to Agony
5. Glass Walls of Limbo [Dance Mix]
6. Misinterpretation of Silence and Its Disastrous Consequences
7. Gravitational Constant

All songs by Type O Negative.

NUXX (NUXX), Monday, 19 July 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

But I don't want revenge! I just want to feel better.

I didn't actually make it for him, (or to win him back, either) even though I sent it to him. I made it to make me feel better. Which it has.

Ma$onic Boom (kate), Monday, 19 July 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

God, I love music so much. Music *is* more real when I'm alone. I can't believe I stopped caring about music for so long, that really was a bad sign. Music is everything, music *is* emotion.

while agreeing 100% with this statement, isn't this exactly what the rockists and nick hornbys of this world get regularly skewered for here? (again, I agree wholeheartedly with your statement)

stevie (stevie), Monday, 19 July 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

[i]But I don't want revenge! I just want to feel better.

Oops, sorry - thought you were a guy for a minute there. In that case, please ignore my pathetic attempt at making you listen to some misogynic music.. heheh

NUXX (NUXX), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I really have to figure out the tags for this board.

NUXX (NUXX), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't share the Nick Hornby hate, I really don't. If that's why people hate Hornby, then they are wrong.

(Besides, I sat down last night and made up my list of my Top Five Worst Breakups.)

Ma$onic Boom (kate), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

haven't *read* Hornby, but have lived parts of the movie of High Fidelity.

stevie (stevie), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh no, please don't turn my thread into a Hornby thread... I've only ever read High Fidelity, and it was very honest and true. The rest of his stuff might well be crap, but if it is, it's due to his writing style, not because writing about music as being emotion is inherently bad. Anyway... moving on!

Ma$onic Boom (kate), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

nah, high fidelity was about music being a distraction for men to project their emotions onto/draw the from, instead of into/from their relationships. completely different thing to what kate's saying.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

the ultimate break-up song has got to be "no children" by the mountain goats.

jedidiah (jedidiah), Monday, 19 July 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Some songs I can't wait to put on a breakup mix, but will first have to get with someone, then breakup with them, to put to proper use:

The Streets "Dry Your Eyes"
Ween "You Fucked Up"
Morphine "Gone For Good"
Jimmy Davis "You Are My Sunshine"
Nirvana "Where Did You Sleep Last Night"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 19 July 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

in my younger days a break-up mix was not complete without 'pictures of you' by the cure. now it's 'bubble' by red house painters. or 'drop' or 'katy song'...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 19 July 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 19 July 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

and for Barry Bruner..."No One Will Ever Love You" Magnetic Fields
I would have suggested "All My Little Words" or "I Don't Wanna Get Over You" (very well suited for stevie's tape). Mainly I didn't suggest anything because there are too many damned songs there and surely everyone would choose something different.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 19 July 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

those are both good calls too

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 19 July 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Sonny A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)
