thesplooge (thesplooge), Monday, 19 July 2004 09:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought this was a C***m thread..

am I out of touch?

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 19 July 2004 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

One of the best 10 bands ever, of course. From the Roxy to TOTP, Poly and the boys made one of the most exciting rackets ever - 3 chord binbag pop-punk that was everything punk should have been and more....alienation, disconnection, and sheer FUN straight outta school! Poly was/is an utterly brilliant frontwoman - hell, even the 1990's 'comeback' material (with Lora Logic again!) is great.

POO? I-DEN-TITEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!

Dr.C, Monday, 19 July 2004 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

who dyou reckon the other 9 bands in the top ten best bands ever are, Dr. C?

OTM by the way.

thesplooge (thesplooge), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard one of their songs. It was about acne. The lead singer was a minger and her voice sounded awful. Not nearly as good as Sleeper.

C-Man (C-Man), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

classic.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

"Some people think little girls should be seen and not heard, but I think...."

"One of the best 10 bands ever" may be overstating it just ever so slightly IMO but they were bloody great.

POO? As the Doc's already gone for Identity I'll have to put my cross next to....

".... Oh Bondage Up Yours!"

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes Dr C otm, right down to the POO... my runner up might be "The Day the World Turned Day-Glo"

OleM (OleM), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

**who dyou reckon the other 9 bands in the top ten best bands ever are, Dr. C?**

Well, today : The Walker Brothers, The Stockholm Monsters, Chic, Joy Division, ABC, The Temptations, The Subway Sect, The Wild Swans and Buggles.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

sooooooo classic!! one of my favourite bands, and i've been playing the orange vinyl "germfree adolescents" a lot lately

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"the day the world turned day-glo" is the best non-psychedelic psych-pop song. classic!

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i am particularly loving "warrior in woolworths" right now

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 19 July 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i for one say classic.

g--ff (gcannon), Monday, 19 July 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Man you guys must have no desire to want to shag your front women at all.

C-Man (C-Man), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Mah mou muys mus mav mo memire moo mont mo mag mour munt mumen ma mahl.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 08:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Its optional, C-man. It's optional.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 08:32 (twenty-one years ago)

What's not to love? Skronky, topical 1st wave punk w double X chrome vox = love at first listen. POO "i live off you"

Dr. Annabel Lies (Michael Kelly), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 08:33 (twenty-one years ago)

.. and you live off me, and the whole world lives off of everybody!

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

..see we gotta be exploited, see we gotta be exploited, by somebody, by somebody, by somebody....!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 08:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Freddie tried to strangle me with my plastic popper beads but I hit him back with my pet rat, yeah I hit him back with my pet rat.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 08:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Surely you mean "r-r-r-r-r-r-rat"!

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:36 (twenty-one years ago)

classic

(what is "non-psychedelic psych-pop"? that sounds like a small genre.)

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, take two...

Freddie tried to strangle me
with my plastic popper beads
but
I
hit him back
with my pet rat.
yeah I
HIT HIM BACK!
WITH MY!
PET!!!
HRAAAAAAAAATTTTT!!!!!!!

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

And then straight into a verse that's a total ripoff of Pomus & Shuman's "Teenager in Love"!

OleM (OleM), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

You would have a point were it not for the fact that Mark's rendition is quite clearly of the FINAL chorus.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Sniff.
*uses soft hygienic Weetabix to dry tears*

OleM (OleM), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

classic, but the lp is kind of disappointing

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

clasic, classic, classic. Great lyrics, great sound, great look, great everything. What a bunch. And then they disappeared (practically, anyway), even more classic. If these hooligans reunite, then surely the world is ending.

rumple, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

you don't like the lp amateurist? i think it is totally great!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

so how dare you not like it.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"If these hooligans reunite, then surely the world is ending."

They have already reunited - once in 1991 (I remember seeing them at Brixton Academy.... not sure how many original members there were apart from Poly 'though) and released a second album called Conscious Consumer (featuring Poly, Lora Logic and bassist Paul Dean) in 1995.

The world is already in the process of ending, obviously.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd also like to throw (at least some of) Poly's solo material into the "not C, but worth a listen" category. _Translucence_ is a wonderful album - "Talk in Toytown" is even creeper/dystopian than "The Day The World Turned Day-Glo," if that's possible. The _Gods & Goddesses_ EP has its moments as well.

"Conscious Consumer" is one of the worst records ever made, despite Lora Logic's presence. Dud.

mike a, Wednesday, 21 July 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Did they not get back together more recently? Somehow I can't imagine it working, as they were more a youthful/bratty vibe, and Marion is quite a beautiful woman figure thesedays... (c-man!)

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic, but I too was a bit disappointed by Germfree Adolescents after buying the long-awaited reissue in '92. Several songs I found a bit too tame and "polished" compared to the more ferocious (yet abysmally recorded and probably illegal) versions on the Receiver Records Obsessed With You: The Early Years collection. I presume those were demos with Lora Logic before she was replaced.

Anyways, still classic.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw a teenager wearing a green x-ray spex shirt on the bus and i almost passed out.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a scene from Love and Rockets where Maggie and Hopey are singing that pet rat song... I've always wondered what it was.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

x-ray spex major milestone in my adolescence

never heard poly styrene solo record but i hear it's worth spending time with

Thea (Thea), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

three months pass...
Apparently X-Ray Spex guitarist Jak Airport ".... died in the early hours of August 13, 2004 after a typically brave and determined fight against cancer for the past two and a half years."

RIP

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Saturday, 20 November 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sorry to read that; I really like X-Ray Spex.

6 September 2008 at the (Camden) Roundhouse.

Provides a bit of advance notice to allow saving up for a ticket (£30), and for them to rehearse.

Poly and the band will be giving a plethora of X-ray classics an airing, including ‘Germ Free Adolescents’ from their hit 1978 album of the same name, ‘I Am A Cliché’, ‘I Am A Poseur’ and of course, ‘Oh Bondage, Up Yours’.

!!!! what next, a PIL reunion?

sleeve, Thursday, 24 January 2008 01:22 (seventeen years ago)

two years pass...

New Poly album -- a rock one, not more New Agey stuff -- due in March. (Produced by Youth, fwiw.) Sample song on her website sounds pretty good.

I went to that Roundhouse gig, was pretty good, and I managed to miss Goldblade's set completely which is always a bonus.

Don't know if the video will appear here like YouTube clips... I liked it okay but wanted it to be more organic, I think.

Still think this is classic:

Poly Styrene Statement:

It comes as a huge shock to all those who know Poly Styrene and X-ray Spex that Poly has been diagnosed with cancer, she is currently undergoing various treatments in her battle with this illness.

She is devastated that she cannot commit to any live dates at this stage, but her album remains a very positive force in her current journey.

Poly has been tweeting about her illness and will continue to keep in touch with fans: "It's been a bit of a battle fighting this cancer but hey ho I'm still alive, Luv Poly x". She also recently added via Twitter “Hoping & praying I can fight this cancer. Thank u all 4 ur positive vibes, I'm overwhelmed, ur keeping me in the land of living.
Luv Poly X”

Funnily enough, reading good ol' C-Man's posts above made me reflect "Actually last time I saw her was on some latterly filmed punk documentary, and she looked stunning"

Missed your post, but this showed up on my FB wall today and was glad to chip in. I guess they threw this trailer together just to stir up interest, although it gives the impression the film's already completed.
