Are they suggesting that ALL of the masters they recorded were contained on this one plastic disc, with no backups? Or are they concerned that it will wind up on the Internet before it comes out officially? (Or both?)
Bizarre ...

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Monday, 19 July 2004 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

The latter would be good, the former better :-)

mei (mei), Monday, 19 July 2004 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not a fan, merely a disbelieving observer.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Monday, 19 July 2004 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

people seem to have the same degree of schadenfreude with regard to U2 as they do with Mrs Beckham.

Jay G (jaybob79), Monday, 19 July 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

taglines:

ALL THAT YOU *CAN* LEAVE BEHIND

I STILL HAVEN'T FOUND WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 19 July 2004 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

it's not just U2. i think you'd have that schaudenfreude with most established artists in AOR world.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 19 July 2004 11:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i was so pleased when him out of boyzone got hospitalised for trying to jump the queue at his local fish n chip shop on account of his fame.

Jay G (jaybob79), Monday, 19 July 2004 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Tell more...

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 19 July 2004 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

hype for new album

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 19 July 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah yeah yeah, your dog ate your homework, then you left it on the bus.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

They already did this with Achtung Baby (I remember finally getting my hands on The Salome Sessions after reading about them being stolen from the studio in 1990).

Looks like somebody needs to hire better security.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Or maybe someone to think up some more original / plausible excuses?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

hahahaha!!

geeta (geeta), Monday, 19 July 2004 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't Bono have some lyrics stolen from him a while back also? Are they just buying for time like video game companies do?

Vinnie (vprabhu), Monday, 19 July 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

this seems to happen to U2 quite a bit. the versions of songs on the CDR will probably be better than the official one.

thesplooge (thesplooge), Monday, 19 July 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Or at least, that's what they'll tell you.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 19 July 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

THEY DO THIS EVERY ALBUM. STOP SWALLOWING.

Gribowitz (Lynskey), Monday, 19 July 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish the new U2 album would sound like the last Liars one and that the last Liars one sounded like whatever the next U2 album will be.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 19 July 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

"STOP SWALLOWING."

Don't tell us, we're not the ones who keep eating The Edge's homework before he can hand it in, tell his dog.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 19 July 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish the new U2 album would sound like the last U2 one - and that people actually notice that this time.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 19 July 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

U2, please make a concept album about witches, please please please

"I'm a witch! I'm a witch! I'm a witch witch witch! Hahahahaha! Watch out for the witch, that's me!" - Bono, "I'm A Witch"

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 19 July 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

And he has to wear a giant witch's hat and hold a broom at all public appearances (he can keep on those purple shades if he must). Then I'll forgive him.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

A whole horror-villian themed thing - "I'm a Werewolf", "I'm a Vampire", finishing with a rousing version of "I'm a Mummy"

Gribowitz (Lynskey), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Bono should be the last rock star to write a love song about (and essentially apologising to) Patti Smith and the video should include Bono singing it to Cher.

george gosset (gegoss), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds to me like a transparent and shallow maneuver to generate "buzz". Yawn. Next?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Wasn't it October that the lyrics got stolen for? Or was that just an excuse after the fact for the crappy lyrics? (...the trees are stripped bare/of all they wear/what do I care...)

spittle (spittle), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

U2's best lyrics are on Pop. It's true!

But this has indeed happened before. I'm sure the end result will be the same: leaked tracks will drum up a little hype but all will be forgotten once the surprisingly good album is released

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

U2's best lyrics are on Pop. It's true!

"let's go....discotheque! You know you're chewin' bubble-gum. You know what that is but ya still want some. Ya just can't get enough of that lovey dovey stuff."

Yeah, that's sheer genius.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

that's totally taken out of context

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

If Bono dressed up like a big cucumber and did a duet with Nicky Wire (in a big banana suit) I'd still think he was a twat, albeit one with a sense of humour.

C-Man (C-Man), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

hopefully Negativeland have stolen the album and put it through some funny artistic process (eg ring-modulated chipmunks) whereby it is so modified that U2 can't litigate.

george gosset (gegoss), Monday, 19 July 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

this news report comes from the voice of america, hence this is all a cover for some counterintelligence program. no doubt there were more interesting things on that cd than new u2 music.*

*like pictures of your neighbor's dog, or MIDI versions of the "theme from 'arthur'"

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 19 July 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, I thought it was missing. If they've got a backup, I don't see what the big deal is.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 23 July 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

U2's best lyrics are on Pop. It's true!

Wrong. Their best lyrics are on Achtung Baby. Zooropa comes close, and the rest of the discography ranges from so-so to terrible in terms of lyric quality.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 23 July 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

discussing u2's "best lyrics" is like discussing idi amin's "best political assassinations"

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 23 July 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

One of the reasons I can still listen to U2 with a straight face is because I've never put much stock in the lyrics. It's all about those sounds the Edge makes.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 23 July 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

discussing u2's "best lyrics" is like discussing idi amin's "best political assassinations"

OTMFM. Gear and Perpetua are accidental agents of Satan here.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 23 July 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

but idi was an accomplished assasin. maybe more like discussing amin's best democratic reforms

dave amos, Friday, 23 July 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Who is gonna ride your wild horses?

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 23 July 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm staying at a house right now where the son has a verse from "mothers of the disappeared" printed out and taped up to his wall.

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 23 July 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I like U2 a lot, and I'm totally unashamed, even though they can be quite cringe-inducing. Achtung Baby is one of my favorite records, I've probably heard it more than any other album.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 23 July 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i like them too, but i haven't made any claims for their lyrics since i was out of short pants.*

*i may never have actually been in short pants.

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 23 July 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Agreed, fluxboy. And I'm excited about the new album title ("Vertigo") cuz I always loved faux-Eurocool U2 da best.

Lukas (lukas), Friday, 23 July 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I didn't know it had been renamed. Solar was a shit title.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 24 July 2004 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

what's the difference??

amateur!st (amateurist), Saturday, 24 July 2004 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

At least they can pretend Vertigo is a Hitchcock reference.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 24 July 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

As one of the 5 people who actually bought (and liked) Zooropa, I'm actually eager to hear the new one....if they ever spit it out

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Saturday, 24 July 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Zooropa was their best album

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 July 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"let's go....discotheque! You know you're chewin' bubble-gum. You know what that is but ya still want some. Ya just can't get enough of that lovey dovey stuff."

Thats completely out of context I'm sure, I've never heard the song, I'm not a U2 fan at all, and I'd still say those are above average lyrics.

David Allen (David Allen), Saturday, 24 July 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Stupid question: why would they not have extra copies of their record? Particularly a band as big as U2?

Is there some kind of fidelity issue with making backup copies of master tapes? The time and/or money that might be needed for the duplication process are certainly no object for U2.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 24 July 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

See here.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 24 July 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, thanks. I hadn't clicked on that link.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 24 July 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

but idi was an accomplished assasin. maybe more like discussing amin's best democratic reforms
-- dave amos (daveamo...), July 23rd, 2004.

And U2 are accomplished shit song writers

David Allen (David Allen), Saturday, 24 July 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Zooropa is fantastic.

Of course I'd never quote U2 on an email signature or anything, I would still say Pop has some nice moments, lyrically.

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 24 July 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
U2 album title: How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 13 September 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

WHAT the FUCK!?!?!?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 13 September 2004 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

that's a kickass title!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 13 September 2004 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh no! They won't make any more money and they'll starve!

Island will go broke!

Their lawyers'll have to start chasing ambulances instead of Negativland.

Sasha (sgh), Monday, 13 September 2004 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

NICE
