I was waiting for the zen touch, but with an alleged 12 hour battery life, maybe i should just go with the real thing.

frankE (frankE), Monday, 19 July 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

APPLE ARE LIKE SMACK DEALERS.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 19 July 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

How long until the Terrabyte Ipods? I'm dying here!

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 19 July 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

fuckery fuck fuck, a new one, fuck, does that mean i aint cool no more?

lukey (Lukey G), Monday, 19 July 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

WHEN DOES THE PRICE DROP ON THE MINIS OMG, WTF

TheRealJMod (TheRealJMod), Monday, 19 July 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

God damn them! HOW CAN I LIVE WITHOUT THE NEW CLICKY WHEEL etc. I'll order one next payday. Grr. I fucking hate Apple.

adam (adam), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

So wait: is the new clicky wheel essentially the same thing as the last clicky wheel, just integrating the buttons into it? Because if so, WHO FUCKING CARES?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I have little interest in clicky wheels but the 12 hour battery life makes me hate my poxy 2003 model already.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I have the 2003 model as well (10 gig — do people really need 40?!). Do we have 10 hours?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Do we fuck.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

can i take it to the beach?

kephm, Monday, 19 July 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

DUD. Because I just bought the 15-gig one for $299 TWO WEEKS AGO and they could've, like, said, "Dude, hold off." Bastards.

spittle (spittle), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

This is what, the 4th generation iPod? Bastards.

In any case, this solves the two problems I have with mine. I had the older one with the buttons around the wheel and now have the four-buttons-in-a-row version and kind of wish I had never changed. It's a pain in the ass to try to turn on the backlight or turn off the whole thing by holding down on "menu" or "pause" only to hit the wrong button. With the buttons on or around the wheel, it was a hell of a lot easier. Also, battery life is now better. This is good.

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Buying one in about two weeks. But I'm waiting for macconnection.com to stock them, because they'll give me free speakers or something with my purchase. Still, 50% more battery life and $100 cheaper? Apple are exceedingly generous smack dealers.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I CAN LEAD YOU THROUGH THE ZONE (ex machina), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The photos on that page make me hate students even more than I did when I was one.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

fuckwads. is the improved battery life because of the battery, or the machine? because if it's the battery, theoretically when my battery dies, I can get one of these better ones, no?

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I read on this msnbc article it's improved power usage not a better battery.

They ship in August, right?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, it SAYS they are shipping in 1-3 days.

So, yeah, knowing Apple, probably August.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Monday, 19 July 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

The apple store here in Seattle says they will have them tomorrow = I already sold mine and I will be knocking on their door tomorrow morning. Because I, like, need more battery life.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Monday, 19 July 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

So seriously: what's the battery life of the 2003's?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 19 July 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic.

Apple's infuriating tactics aside, I have a first-generation 5GB and never liked the look/feel of the second- and third-generations, i.e. following the move of the buttons off the wheel. They're back where they belong and still cheaper (esp. considering the entry-level difference in memory) than when I first got mine.

nader (nader), Monday, 19 July 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no problem with the proximity of the buttons on mine. First generation buttons seems weird...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 19 July 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

2003s get ~ 8 hours on a full charge, but the full charge capacity diminishes over time (allegedly, mine seems fine though, but I usually run it off AC)

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 19 July 2004 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, thx. Yeah, 12 hours sounds a lot better. Though I still find it hard to believe anyone actually NEEDS 40 gig. I mean, I spend most of my time reshuffling that last gig on mine...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 19 July 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I never feel like I get 8 hours on mine, but I've never tested it properly.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 19 July 2004 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Neither do I, but apparently if you jump around to different tracks a lot, the battery gets beaten down some...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 19 July 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

And I've got ADD when it comes to my iPod...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 19 July 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I have definitely NEVER gotten 8 hours out of mine, but I do tinker quite a bit.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Monday, 19 July 2004 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

First, it's not like you can't get sell ANY old ipod for a good price - like any Apple product - it holds it value - so you can trade up or sideways ANYTIME. Hell, there are people who are selling Newton's for $200!

And for those who complain that new ones get improved - well, duh - what's it supposed to be - crappier with each release? And did you leave yours in the box and stare at it or have you already used it like 10,000 hours?

jbelkin, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 03:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Best Buy and CompUSA, etc. offer extended warranties to replace an item over the course of three years for sixty dollars and iPods are one of the very few things that make this coverage worthwhile.
I bought my iPod 30 gig a year ago and all I have to do is bring it back in to them now, after I make sure that the 30 gig is not in stock. Contractually, they're obliged to trade in for the closest legitimate UPGRADE available if the original item isn't available, AKA "darn this doesn't seem to be working anymore, think I'll return for the new and spiffy 40gig in about a month and a half once they've completely fazed out the oldschool 2003 30 giggers". Plus you can renew that sixty buck warranty on the new hardware, allowing you to upgrade the same speed Apple does for only sixty an upgrade.
Word to the wise.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Good luck Gorksetc. You'll need it.

mei (mei), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:11 (twenty-one years ago)

12 hrs is PATHETIC, rounding down by the usual bullshit exaggeration factor (that goes for car top speeds, bicycle weights and evrything else battery life) I use my discman more than that most days!

They are functionally useless!

mei (mei), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I was planning on finally buying an ipod later this week when I hit Chicago for a few days. The timing of this announcement is just too perfect... unless, of course, the store doesn't get them in by then.

One thing that kind of caught my eye- the advertised "Adjust speed for Audiobooks" feature. Anybody know if this is going to work on music as well? If it allows you to adjust pitch, I'd like to see what someone more talented than me could do with two of them and a fader.

strophic (strophic), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

mei: uh, this worked once before already.

Gorksetc. (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Mei, you use your discman for more than ten hours a day? That sure is a lot. So I guess the iPod is not ideal for you (unless those ten hours are spent in places like a office or library, where you could just plug the iPod in), but it seems a bit of a stretch to call it "pathetic." 10-12 hours seems super adequate to me!

Scott CE (Scott CE), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

and he either listens to the same CD 10-12 times or carries 12 cd's around with him. lame.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I believe he may have discovered the power of the MP3 disc...

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

that may be the case

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

how many 700MB cd-r's would you need to carry around for 40GB?

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Not if he's using a DiscMan. God forbid Sony sell a product that played an MP3, cuz the electronics market is so much less important than that of their record division. Pffft.

frankE (frankE), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Geez. To be a freshman at Duke:

http://www.dukenews.duke.edu/news/ipods_0704.html

frankE (frankE), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Discman = generic term, I guess.

This may be the time to say that I think the only serious alternative to expensive and ultimately dying hard disc players should be a mini (ie. 5cm, like those CD singles you used to get) DVD-R player. You'd get over 1GB (250 tracks?) on each little disc, and It would be no bother to fit a few in your pocket. Yeah, I know there's the new 1GB minidiscs, but who wants minidiscs and anyway, the players always seem much more expensive.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost to Phil:

Can you explain a bit more about your Macconnection.com statement? Are they making such offers?

metfigga (metfigga), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

DUD. Because I just bought the 15-gig one for $299 TWO WEEKS AGO and they could've, like, said, "Dude, hold off." Bastards.

Tsk tsk. Any good and faithful Apple customer should be consulting Macrumors' Buying Guide before purchasing any major products.

two weeks pass...
OMG THE 20GB IPODS ARE FLYING OFF THE SHELVES

Went to buy one yesterday at the big Apple Store on Prince Street, and as it turns out the fucker in front of me in line bought the LAST 20GB they had in stock. Cockblocking fucker. They had a couple dozen of the 40GBs left, btw.

Went back today, saw two 20GBs on the shelf behind the cashier, waited while the customer in front of me bought his, walked up (cash in hand), and was told "sorry, we just ran out." "Erm, what's that one on the shelf over there?" Cashier went to take a look, came back w/ iPod box in hand. "This one was returned and refreshed. It's yours if you want it, and we'll give you a 10% discount."

After all that, I'm now the proud owner of a pre-owned iPod! Let's see if it works.

Elle a chaud au cul (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 9 August 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Good luck with your new iPod, Elle a chaud au cul.

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 9 August 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice! And yay for sales.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 August 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i would like to get my wife an ipod mini as a surprise presnt. Shhhhhhh!

She has a walkman and only one tape! The same tape that she has been listening to over and over for almost a year and a half. I don't know what's on it. I mean, she's not big into music, but this makes me so so sad! :(

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 9 August 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I could just get her some tapes.

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 9 August 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

You should really find out what's on that tape!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 9 August 2004 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha! I know. I think that it contains tracks by Kylie and Madison Avenue among others. I think I made it for her! but...I'm not sure.

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 9 August 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I am bad.

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 9 August 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Now this thread has become RELATIONSHIP ANGST

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 August 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

What if she's listening to a tape of the works of great thinkers: Karl Marx, Lenin, L. Ron Hubbard, Freddie Laker???!!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 9 August 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

do they do engraving for the mini? you could give her an ipod mini that says "homer" on it.

Lukas (lukas), Monday, 9 August 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

While on the treadmill at the Y? Unlikely.

xpost

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 9 August 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i got a new 20Gig and it won't mount to my home computer :(

JaXoN (JasonD), Monday, 9 August 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

She does listen to CDs I leave in the car. She thinks grime is "positive".

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 9 August 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The idea of adam's wife listening to the tape he made her for 18 months straight is just too cute for words.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 9 August 2004 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

That IS what we are like!

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 9 August 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

We are excessively twee!

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 9 August 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

My husband got me the new 20G one as a surprise - he called the Apple store daily until they got them in. I *love* it.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Monday, 9 August 2004 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 9 August 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

haha! I'm not 23. DON'T YOU READ YOUR NOISE BOARD, CUTTY?

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 9 August 2004 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i could have sworn you said you were 23.7686866

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 9 August 2004 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish! :(

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 9 August 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

people get married at 23 in the real world anyway.

if she listened to that tape non stop (and it is sweet!) she needs like a half a gig ipod at most.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

haha!

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

when people younger than me get married i get nervous

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Big plus with the new gen ipods: they include a USB connector, saving non-firewire users $19 for that extra cable

Small drawback: no dock

Bigger drawback: no case; the previous style that came with the gen 1,2,3 ipods is being sold by Apple for $39. Suck.

ng, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The 40s come with a dock. I just spent about an hour teaching my very non-mechanically inclined father how to use his (spurred by my getting a 20meg - he wanted one that was "the best"). I've never seen him so excited... When I left he was happily ripping his CD collection of blues, folk and zydeco (I taught him how to change the genre to zydeco since CDDB kept "getting it wrong").

So, basically, we've officially crossed the threshold.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

What a great dad.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I've had my 40GB for a couple of weeks now, and am running out of stuff to stuff into it. I'm now raiding co-workers' record collections and importing all the Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin albums I never actually got around to buying myself.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

running out of stuff? i filled my 40GB already.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

As of this morning (latest additions: Mel Brown's Chicken Fat, Alice Coltrane's A Monastic Trio, The Essential Earth, Wind & Fire, Nico's The Marble Index, Matthew Shipp's New Orbit and Nu Bop, Spirit Caravan's The Last Embrace, Cecil Taylor's New York City R&B and The World Of Cecil Taylor, and X's Under The Big Black Sun), I've got 7.61 GB left.
