DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 19 July 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I reckon either John Cale or Robert Wyatt will be included as the "plus token old 60's geyser / cult hero / elder statesman" entry.

I don't think Morrisey's been around quite long enough to qualify for inclusion in this section yet - although that may be just me showing my age.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 19 July 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

jaxx to win. fck the nominations. i'll bet £££ on this.

or the streets.

piscesboy, Monday, 19 July 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

but can you see Morrissey in this competition? he would constantly moan

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 19 July 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

who cares? the ILM 100 Favourite Albums and tracks of the 00s So Far Poll is where the real party is

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 19 July 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

He'll constantly moan anyway 'though, won't he? That's what Morrissey does.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 19 July 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

do you mean Morrissey or Martian, Stewart? ;)

ah well, I'm bored so let's play anyway:

Ty, Winehouse, Streets, FF, Razorlight, B&S, Wiley, Kathryn Williams, Delays, Wyatt, Orbital, [token]

zebedee (zebedee), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Playlouder make their predictions:

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I totally forgot Jamelia. Her instead of either KW or Orbital, then.

zebedee (zebedee), Monday, 19 July 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Junior Boys? Infinite Livez?

Paul (scifisoul), Monday, 19 July 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Junior Boys being Canadian don't qualify for the Mercury Prize.

Infinte Livez
does qualify though
http://www.bigdada.com/artist.php?id=99

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 19 July 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Jim Moray's Sweet England is a shoe-in for the token folk pick.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 19 July 2004 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Well... it's a guitar year, innit? Franz Ferdinand could be a good guess, as long as they've got a radio friendly third single on the album.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 19 July 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

London's Xfm make their predictions:

Shortlist Predictions.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 08:21 (twenty-one years ago)

idealism and a well balanced mix of styles, imagine a 12 Shortlist as follows:

Julian Arguelles - As Above, So Below (Provocateur Records)
Anathema - A Natural Disaster (Music For Nations)
Beta Band - Heroes to Zeroes (Regal)
Broadway Project - The Vessel (Memphis Industries)
John Cale - Hobosapiens (EMI)
Claro Intelecto - Neurofibro (Ai)
Dom and Roland - Chronology (Moving Shadow)
Envoy - Shoulder2Shoulder (Soma)
Guapo - The Five Suns (Cuneiform)
Ty - Upwards (Big Dada)
Robert Wyatt - Cuckooland (Hannibal)
Zoot Woman - Zoot Woman (Wall of Sound)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 08:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i bet none of those make the list

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't rule out Ty.

All I'm saying - there's a reason Dogs Die In Hot Cars' album was out last week. I'd vastly prefer The Futureheads, but hey. It's most likely the Streets' year.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Dogs Die Hot Cars = XTC/ Talking Heads Karbon Kopy Karaoke

There are melodies on certain tracks that could be lifted from Talking Heads - Little Creatures album, circa 1985.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and no-one's mentioned Will Young. He's credible. He's got a hat. And his album has got to be one of the biggest selling British albums of the past 12 months.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Will PJ Harvey make it - after winning in 2001?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:22 (twenty-one years ago)

you have less than 10-15 minutes to make predictions...

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:22 (twenty-one years ago)

my outsider bet that could make the shortlist:

Grand National - Kicking The National Habit

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Will The Beta Band get in?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:26 (twenty-one years ago)

*crosses fingers for Jonny*

Melissa W (Melissa W), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and Snow Patrol.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Melissa Radiohead's Number 1 fan !

But was the album entered by the record label? Are you aware, Melissa?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I would assume they would, hoping it'll get the token classical nod.

But I don't know. *shrug*

Melissa W (Melissa W), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Please NO Snow Patrol ! Corporate Indie Rock rubbish

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Mylo will be on

HAri, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:31 (twenty-one years ago)

last minute shout outs/ predictions...

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Richard X ? as pop type nomination?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:33 (twenty-one years ago)

R1 says Snow Patrol and Winehouse both on...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:33 (twenty-one years ago)

please NO

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm listening to 6 Music

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:34 (twenty-one years ago)

horrible feeling Snow Patrol will be there ... maybe even McFly

coco, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Snow Patrol have zero creativity/ or fresh ideas

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:36 (twenty-one years ago)

what does that vocal hook in 'Spitting Games' remind me of so much?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

a Coldplay track?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

their music appeals to four types of people: the old, the very old, the old-at-heart and the dead

coco, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

who are Snow Patrol fans 17 year old kids or 40s Virgin radio listeners?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

No news on Radio 1, yet?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:40 (twenty-one years ago)

R1 says:

Snow Patrol
The Streets
Keane
Jamelia
The Zutons (WTF?)
Joss Stone
Belle & Sebastian (RAH!)
Amy Winehouse
Basement Jaxx
Franz Ferdinand
Ty
Robert Wyatt

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously - The Zutons? Decent singles, but fuck me...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

snow patrol, winehouse, franz, keane, basement, joss stone, jamelia, wyatt, ty, zutons

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

JAXX TO WIN

pete b. (pete b.), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

both - but the 17-year-olds are actually older than the 40-year-olds. they're the kind of people who won't like music AT ALL when they're 40.

coco, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

plus streets..makes 11

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:44 (twenty-one years ago)

The really odd thing - you really could make a case for most of those winning. Except The Zutons and Snow Patrol.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and MusicWeek apparently reckons The Streets will be atop both charts this weekend, which is fair enough really.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:58 (twenty-one years ago)

The Zutons and Snow Patrol are the big turkeys ..every year they have at least 1 totally rubbish album

previously: Turin Brakes, Electric Soft Parade, The Coral

However good to see: Ty and Robert Wyatt - on the shortlist.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:58 (twenty-one years ago)

both the Snow Patrol and Keane albums are full to the brim with sickly, teary-eyed student disco shite.

coco, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Edith Bowman is going out with Guy Garvey from Elbow - i wonder if she voted for them, but the rest of the panel didn't? and was Simon Frith aware of her conflict of interests?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, but music is her first love. So obviously she went for Snow Patrol instead.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:03 (twenty-one years ago)

both the Snow Patrol and Keane albums are full to the brim with sickly, teary-eyed student disco shite.

As is much of the Streets album most notably the new single.

I predict that there'll not be nearly enough Amy Winehouse love on this thread. It's a really awesome album.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

No token jazz, classical, folk or jazz nominations this year.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:06 (twenty-one years ago)

none of the above, DJ Mencap. Let's face it, despite all the lists that Martian tempted us with of late, only about 20-25 records had a realistic shot this year.

i am depressed that Snow Patrol made the final 12, though.

zebedee (zebedee), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Thing about Amy's Wine Lodge - is there anything she HASN'T been nominated for in the past year?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Biggest lips by a female singer in London?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

apparently 180 albums were entered this year according to BBC News

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Junior Boys being Canadian don't qualify for the Mercury Prize.

almost forgot that it's to recognise UK artists, right?
even though he's on Nick's UK label

Paul (scifisoul), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:12 (twenty-one years ago)

radio 5live presenter [Worricker] reckons Robert Wyatt is an unknown - sums up your average "virgin radio" listener 40something man.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

yep, Mercury Prize open to British Isles [British & Irish] artists only.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

sure it was mentioned at the time but how much of a sales boost did 'Boy In Da Corner' get from winning last year? does that still happen now? seems to be the only thing keeping the MMP remotely relevant.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

yep, all albums nomionated will have sales increases

to get nominated guarantees Retail Point of Sale promotions in every retail chain, and the key e-commerce websites, plus extensive media / press coverage - the whole package in terms of economic opportunity cost is massive for record labels.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:31 (twenty-one years ago)

sure it was mentioned at the time but how much of a sales boost did 'Boy In Da Corner' get from winning last year? does that still happen now? seems to be the only thing keeping the MMP remotely relevant.

And even that in itself is a puzzler, because the apparent level of public interest wouldn't, you'd think, equal a significant upswing in sales. But every year it happens.

I posted this last time round, but I literally cannot fathom the mentality of whoever dashes out and buys a CD after it wins a prize voted by a panel of judges

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:32 (twenty-one years ago)

latest betting odds have been set:

Franz Ferdinand (‘Franz Ferdinand’) 3-1 Joint Favourite
The Streets (‘A Grand Don’t Come For Free’) 3-1 Joint Favourite
Snow Patrol (‘Final Straw’) 6-1
Keane (‘Hopes & Fears’) 6-1
Amy Winehouse (‘Frank’) 6-1
Basement Jaxx (‘Kish Kash’) 10-1
Jamelia (‘Thank You’) 10-1
Joss Stone (‘The Soul Sessions’) 10-1
Belle And Sebastian (‘Dear Catastrophe Waitress’) 12-1
The Zutons (‘Who Killed The Zutons’) 12-1
Robert Wyatt (‘Cuckooland’) 12-1
Ty (‘Upwards’) 12-1

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:33 (twenty-one years ago)

but Mencap your average Brit is not a rabid music loving ILM-er, the typical casual music fans - need to be guided.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I posted this last time round, but I literally cannot fathom the mentality of whoever dashes out and buys a CD after it wins a prize voted by a panel of judges

if that's the case then why do you take such interest in the MMP at all?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:37 (twenty-one years ago)

unless you enjoy a flutter - Jaxx worth a fiver maybe

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:38 (twenty-one years ago)

but Mencap your average Brit is not a rabid music loving ILM-er, the typical casual music fans - need to be guided.

Do they? Strikes me it should be the opposite, if you're largely unaware of subgenres and shifting fashions and whatnot then that makes you all the more likely to just buy what you like without worrying about some fanboy mongboard laughing at you.

if that's the case then why do you take such interest in the MMP at all?

Well, I'm not exactly going to lose sleep over it. I think the prize itself is totally pointless, but that doesn't stop it being an interesting talking point, any less than Big Brother is

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:45 (twenty-one years ago)

but tomorrow 30s/ 40s / 50s readers of The Guardian, The Independent and The Times etc - will read about the news - to reach a critical mass audience - in terms of awareness of album - will be a massive boost for the record labels that have artists nominated.

Even the tabloids e.g Mirror and Star will publish the news - this is massive publicity.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Amy Winehouse? In every interview she comes across as (hey get this) a poor mans Marissa Marchant! For truth!

I'm actually surprised Joss Stone is more an 'outside bet' than Amy, 'kidding' aside.

Keane winning would be a yawn.

The Streets album seems not as god as the previous. So, a shoe in to win?

Snow Patrol? Not as good as Franz. Soz Guyz.

Jamelia? A good outside bet. Ty? only album I have no knowledge of, which is good for me.

Robert Wyatt? Now that would be something!

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I *know* all this, but my weak brane cannot fathom the leap of the imagination that makes people think, "ooh, so these are the best 12 records doing the rounds at the moment eh? Off to the shops I go."

I don't think this is a snob thing or an indie fuck thing or an ILM thing either - it just seems weird. I mean, I was never one for buying albums purely on magazines' recommendations either, but at least they'd give you a few hundred words telling you why the album in question is good

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:08 (twenty-one years ago)

It's people who like to kid themselves on that they are interested in music. So, even though they have completely managed to miss these albums coming out, they can see one that fits into their own perception of what a happening hipster they are, buy it, listen to it in the Mondeo and bore everyone rigid talking about it between leaving the squash court and starting their fucking polenta

coco, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Y'see, I'm trying really hard to talk about this imagined demographic without resorting to every tired cliche in the book and then this fella comes along...

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:18 (twenty-one years ago)

In my defence, I claim Veritas, m'lud.

coco, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

for stevem
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/music/3909017.stm
Sales of Dizzee Rascal's victorious Boy In Da Corner album went up 150% the day after he won last year.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Depressing, or just plain bizarre

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Or actually a good thing, I can't decide

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

[insert joke about returns going up 2 days after here]

zebedee (zebedee), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe 'buying an album because it won some trumped up prize' goes hand in hand with 'returning an album a day after you bought it' wrt to a certain stereotpyical consumer. who are these people again?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I always assumed that things like the MMP acted as a sort of deciding factor to sway people in favour of buying an album they were already interested in, as opposed to the sole impetus to buying an album they'd not really heard of before. Like... if someone whose taste I trust told me today that the Brandy album was worth getting, I'd probably get it at some point.

Can't comprehend anyone trusting Edith Bowman's taste though.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i) who is Edith Bowman?
ii) is the Brandy album worth getting? (seriously. this is U+K)

zebedee (zebedee), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Edith Bowman - annoying daytime radio 1 presenter

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/djs/bowman/

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Me neither Alex, but I wouldn't give her opinion any less credence than Simon Frith (he is still on the judging panel right?) He strikes me as a slightly more academic Petridis, where you either have no idea who he is or think he's wrong all the time

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

ii) is the Brandy album worth getting? (seriously. this is U+K)

I want to know this too. Was a little disappointed by "Talk About Our Love" but Brandy + Timbaland = mmmm, awesomeness, potentially.

Edith Bowman - annoying daytime radio 1 presenter

Together with Jason off Big Brother, the only person I know who can make the Scottish accent sound awful.

Simon Frith, still? Ugh.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe 'buying an album because it won some trumped up prize' goes hand in hand with 'returning an album a day after you bought it' wrt to a certain stereotpyical consumer. who are these people again?

Sorry to take so long, I'm having trouble deciding whether to substitute polenta with the even more obvious cous cous.

coco, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

brandy album worth getting if on sale

jess, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Simon Frith wrote a few decent books on the Sociology of Rock in the 80s, in the 90s/ 00s he is a clueless plank - who comes out with daft wordy soundbite comments each July on 12 albums

currently Prof. in Film & Media Studies - University of Sterling
http://www-fms.stir.ac.uk/staff_info/frith.html

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I *know* all this, but my weak brane cannot fathom the leap of the imagination that makes people think, "ooh, so these are the best 12 records doing the rounds at the moment eh? Off to the shops I go."

I don't think nomination makes people run out and buy your record blind/deaf as much as winning might. My guess is nominated acts get a load more people going into shops and *listening to them* to see what they're like, whereas the winning act is likely to see pure blind/deaf speculative sales, even to people who'd never heard of the act before. This probably happened more than usual with Dizzee, who was comfortably under the mainstream radar before last year's MMAs.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that's fair enough I suppose and I'll cheerfully admit that listening to probably a thousand new albums in a year makes you a bit complacent to say the least. Still doesn't make me think the damn award is any more useful, or make me any less frustrated with people who regard music as a disposable lifestyle pursuit, but y'know

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Diz's LP increasing sales by 150% actually isn't very much in absolute terms. But anyway, it's an okay list if you're into albums, which I'm not really. Music is precisely a disposable lifestyle pursuit!

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha.

Snow Patrol (‘Final Straw’) 6-1
Keane (‘Hopes & Fears’) 6-1
Belle And Sebastian (‘Dear Catastrophe Waitress’) 12-1

Ty, Wyatt, and Jaxx are non-starters. Franz Ferdinand, Jamelia and The Streets are too succesful to win the Mercury. Stone and Winehouse aren't guitar bands, and this is a guitar year. The Zutons would be an obvious Gomez/Talvin Singh kinda nomination, Belle and Sebastian are probably too... Belle and Sebastian to win, Snow Patrol vs Keane? Hmmm. Snow Patrol are probably more "credible", whatever that means. Keane would be a good placater of the industry actually, and I think after Dizzee last year they're going to want to give it to an artist that actually has mass appeal, so it probably is Keane's year.

see now there is no way franz are going up 150% in sales as its already been shoved down everyone's throats to the nth degree.
unlike dizzee/gomez/talvun singh etc. not that it isn't *fantastic*, but it's been everywhere, and consequently sold a million. there's no way they'll win. it'll be jaxx if there's any fckng justice.

Dizzee was the lowest bump in sales figures post Mercury win since Singh, for what it's worth.
