Why do British singers talk with such British accents but sing with definite American accents?

Sue Miller, Monday, 19 July 2004 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

why do you park in a driveway and drive in a parkway?

JaXoN (JasonD), Monday, 19 July 2004 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't know

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 19 July 2004 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know either, but you are right. They talk with such British accents. It's like they were from England or something.

what are grape nuts anyway? they aren't grapes, they aren't nuts.. WHAT ARE THEY

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 19 July 2004 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

erm, like who Sue?

(if this isn't just meant as a bit)

de, Monday, 19 July 2004 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Indeed, Sue, you should give examples. Cause I happen to be listening to Robyn Hitchcock at the moment, and he most certainly does not sing with an American accent. Nor do plenty of other artists who talk with such British accents.

Come to think of it, how did Pop Will Eat Itself pronounce the word "garage" when they were singing it?

Are there any "RAHJ" AGAINST THE MACHINE fans in England?

Thea (Thea), Monday, 19 July 2004 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Masked Gazza, Monday, 19 July 2004 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Masked Gazza, Monday, 19 July 2004 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

When Serge Gainsbourg sings in English does he put on a Yank accent?

Thea (Thea), Monday, 19 July 2004 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

well i'm sure a yank is involved somewhere

Masked Gazza, Monday, 19 July 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Does Serge cough in French? Because I understand him when he coughs and I don't speak French very well.

Thea (Thea), Monday, 19 July 2004 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

the guy from comsats does NOT sound american

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 19 July 2004 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

brigitte bardot must moan in an american accent too.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I read the Peter Gammons - Jimmy Kimmel mailbag, too.

Joseph McCombs, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Sue, it's been explained to me like this: most singers learn a standard style of musical enunciation (even if they aren't trained) regardless of their country of origin. Vocalists from both sides of the Atlantic end up with a ... "singer's dialect." The Brits you hear don't sound American so much as they sound like American singers.

I don't really buy it, but I suspect a certain amount of truth to the idea.
