is the prevalence of knee-jerk reactionism toward the new All Music Guide almost as problematic as the new All Music Guide itself?

Dudes, the old layout was so homely! That yellow!

Sonny A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

All it needed was a simple facelift. Not to be systematically destroyed and rebuilt by the lowest bidder (who, I assume, was a 12 year old boy from somewhere in Idaho named Ernie).

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

it may be kneejerk, but i'm finding it hard to love the revamped allmusic.com site.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a knee jerk when you get hit in the knee by a hammer ... while the old music guide was not a thing of beauty, it was clearly designed by someone who actually liked music - this new design is clearly from someone who took a look at Apple's website tabs and then a community class college on web design - but it is obviously and clearly designed by someone who cares nothing about music or why people would use allmusic.com

The main thing is the additions and changes make NO SENSE whatsoever. It's one thing to add ads or to charge people or maybe to make it more difficult to grab info (for copyright reasons) but the powers that be were duped by someone who sold them SOS - it is the ONLY website since the internet era to be redesigned by an amateur so it's much harder to use. And now they are too embarassed to admit they were duped by an amateur designer so they claim they are still fixing it ... the only problem is NO ONE was complaining it was broken - sure there were parts we would have liked to have seen it improve but I'll bet if they posted one artist in the new format and asked us users to vote, I believe the votew would've been 90 to 10 to keep things exactly the same.

They blew it but they are a public company and we should email them often telling them (somehwat politely) - there are slo links at allmedi.com (their corporate site) with links to PR and Marketing. Tell them often how GOd-awful it is.

Yellow!

Sonny A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not that bad, ladies.

dean? (deangulberry), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 03:37 (twenty-one years ago)

WHAT IS YUO ARE TEH GIRLEY MANS!?!!?

dean? (deangulberry), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 03:37 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not kneejerk when neither the search function nor any of the links work on the computer I use. They did before.

That's just shit.

Sasha (sgh), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 03:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll say this: It's not as broken as it was last week. It looks ok in Safari now. Still slow as fuck in dial-up, but it always was. Maybe a little worse now what with all the extra clicking required. I'll still use it when I need it, but I probably won't be doing the casual random record research thing as much as I used to, if at all.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 03:52 (twenty-one years ago)

it takes sooooooooo long to load and all the logging in etc and going through different menus is driving me insane. i used to be able to find what i wanted directly from the front page before.

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 03:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm with Sonny.

Evanston Wade (EWW), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 04:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Google.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i would have to say i didn't really care about the homely aesthetics of the old website, i used it for its functional aspects, not its (lack of) prettiness

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 04:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I still don't get it: Do brainwashed technology addicts these days just automatically think lavender is less "homely" or "cheesy" or "outdated" than yellow? So, like, favorite colors are thought to be matter of objective aesthetic TRUTH or something now? Bizarre. Then again, I don't read the fashion pages, so I've never understood why people think such and such color is, um, "in" this spring...

it goes to show that usability/ experience design/ user experience - is extremely important - companies that ignore these concepts - will see that the reputation of their brand/company is damaged - and ultimately this will effect their long term peformance.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the new site would be ok if all the content was accessable through the tabs and the "read more..." link but without a page load. Just use DHTML to expose the requested content.

I CAN LEAD YOU THROUGH THE ZONE (ex machina), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

it would be awesome if the page loaded in a new firefox window with each tab matching the current artist bio/disco/etc. schematic.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

yea, firefox is like uhhh 5% of users tops?!

here is an example of DHTML done right:

knee jerk n. A reflex contraction of the quadriceps muscle resulting in a sudden involuntary extension of the leg, produced by a sharp tap to the tendon below the patella; patellar reflex.

knee jerk (Physiol.) a jerk or kick produced by a blow or sudden strain upon the patellar tendon of the knee, which causes a sudden contraction of the quadriceps muscle; one of the so-called tendon reflexes.

This is not an attack on anyone, but I think knee-jerk ought to stricken from the ilm lexicon. I imagine that nowhere in the world is that phrase used more frequently than on this site. Some suggested replacements (depending on what exactly one wishes to connote): reflexive, instinctive, patellar, etc.

Of course, one may still say knee-jerk when referring to that exquisite art whereby one pleasures a man by clamping him between the calf and lower thigh and oscillating vigorously to climax.

But hey, somebody on the other thread offered an even MORE user friendly solution, for those of us who speak English and stuff!!!!

>Yeah, get the ten CD install of Free Bltfzpk 5.4x. Don't forget the Excrement 01.1 action web accelerator add-ons, people. And you'll need the CrummyFree compiler, although that usually comes with Bltfzpk. Support is excellent

i cannot for the life of me tell if this is a joke or not

someone likes them some Microsoft Windows apparently!

I CAN LEAD YOU THROUGH THE ZONE (ex machina), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

It deserves a place in the web design hall of shame.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

For some reason, everytime I read someone bitching about it, I start thinking, Oh my God... was it really that bad? I don't remember it being that bad.... And then I visit, and I realize it really is that bad.

moofman (moofman), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i've gotten more used to it... but it's still frustrating to be a few extra clicks away from certain thingies.

alas and so on...

You're right to think it's a matter of fashion. You're wrong, however, to think it's just some ridiculous brainwashing. As I explained on the other thread, it's a matter of marketing, selling adspace.

How is your crusty "I got your number pal" stance on the issue any more enlightened or less pretentious?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Now Google, there's a handsome website

Sonny A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

"Cleanliness is next to Godliness" applies to web design as well.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

It deserves a place in the web design hall of shame.

It's been on the right side of Zeldman's site since it went live. It's listed as a link titled "Designing Without Web Standards." I wouldn't worry about it going down historically as a piece of shit usability site... It's already got the street cred for it.

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Lavender is the new yellow.
