Chris Martin wants to be a rapper.

m. (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:48 (twenty-one years ago)

top 5 reasons rap is dead:

1. jadakiss on regis and kelly
2. scott stapp solo album with "pronounced hip-hop feel"
3. my 60 year old white-haired general manager saying an angry customer "had beef" with us
4. shaq vs. skillz battle
5. this news

Red Bull Dozers announces new "Urban" direction

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:00 (twenty-one years ago)

can we turn this into the thread where we post dodgy "urban" marketing schemes? k thnx bye

jess, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

hahhaha "marketing".

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 11:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I went to high school with the guy producing the Scott Stapp album. He once said "a bird in the hand is always greener on the other side".

I'm pretty sure the use of "have beef" as an expression precedes hip hop.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Will someone please deport Chris Martin to a third world country?

Thanks.

P.S. Take his wife with him.

P.P.S. Worst celebrity ever = Chris Martin. I hate this guy.

C-Man (C-Man), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Thing is, in person, he's really really nice.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

he just cheats at pub quizzes

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

He was into Eminem waaaaaay back in the day, y'know.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm looking forward to this because logic tells me it couldn't possibly be anything but offensive while history shows us that Chris Martin couldn't possibly do anything noticeable.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, big ups to Mitch for the thread title

Sonny A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm really glad The Libertines have come along.

I lost all hope in a modern iconic Pulp-like band when Coldplay seemed to take off. I really did. I'm glad Franz Ferdinand and The Raveonettes are around too.

Seriously, is there a blander, duller more false band than Coldplay? Is he going to keep writing middle of the road, cynical, oh woe is me ballads now he's rich as hell and shagging a Hollywood sex God? What can he possibly moan about now?

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 01:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Calum, do you like the Franz Ferdinand cover of "Mis-shapes"?

That said, if rap could be killed by Chris Martin sticking his toe in, it probably deserves to die. (NB: obviously it couldn't and doesn't)

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I've not heard it - where do I get the Mis-Shapes cover?

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

It was on one of the MP3 blogs. For some reason I can't remember which. It's live and acoustic, respectful but rather unthrilling.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Aha. it was from Copy, Right?. Still seems to be up. I bet I've rooted those tags up.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 02:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Saying Coldplay is boring and MOR is fine, but claiming that the scene is fine 'cause of fucking Franz Ferdinandand and one-of-many-current-Go4-bandwagon-jumpers the Raveonettes? That's fucked.

ravonettes sound like Gang of Four? wha? i thought they were the ones that sounded like jesus and mary chain (but the ones that weren't black motorcyycle rebel club or whatever)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

The Raveonettes are indeed the ones who sound like The Jesus and Mary Chain crossed with the Shangralas.

Franz Ferdinand's album tails off a bit. I like them. They're not a patch on The Libertines (hallowed be their name) of course.

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously, is there a blander, duller more false band than Coldplay?

The Libertines?

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 10:23 (twenty-one years ago)

You aint seen them live, clearly. And bland? Dude how the hell are they bland? Or false?

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 10:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh I was just trying to get a rise out of you... they're not blander at all. Just more false

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

crossed with the Shangralas.

Heh.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

C-man you're talking my language now. Had 'The Scientist' foisted on me off a jukebox yesterday - ugh ugh ugh. this is NOTHING to do with 'love', this is sentimental chocolate-box hallmark greeting card slush.

Clayplod are peddling the musical version of a sappy romcom chick flick - it's Music For Girls Who Don't Like Music, the path of least resistance and it's opened the floodgates to a whole host of mediocre wannabees. what astounds me is that they've gotten away with this dickless pap for so long. where are the UK music press? where's the backlash? where are the teeth?

so far Rod Liddle is the only hack to clock these dismal pillocks.

sharpen up journos. they've had one of the easiest rides in the history of UK music and damn, there's PLENTY to be hating on - just start with the lyrics and progress to the girlfriend and let nature take it's course...

john clarkson, Wednesday, 21 July 2004 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Clayplod are peddling the musical version of a sappy romcom chick flick - it's Music For Girls Who Don't Like Music

This is such a tired method of dismissal - "music for girls", ugh, why don't those girls leave the proper music love to their boyfriends because all they care about is how fit the singer is anyway. I know more boys who like Coldplay than girls.

The Libertines are shit too.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

He's right though. No other journalist apart from voice of rock Rod Liddle has dared to criticise Coldplay. Not one

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

The Libertines are the best band in a decade.

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

that one song clocks by coldplay is great. lots of people pretend to hate it though.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Which decade?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

The one Coldplay song which is great is "God Put A Smile Upon Your Face". You have to ignore the title. "Clocks" is OK but only the dance mixes.

The Libertines are Courtney Love without the good music.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

And more tits.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

-- C-Man (cma...), July 21st, 2004 11:58 AM. (later)

c-man you went to see coldplay live????

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Libertines live.

I saw/ heard Coldplay from a distance a T in the Park last year. Just two songs. I was waiting for two of our pack to appear and when they did I went straight to the bus home.

Subject: The Libertines!! (soo rockin!)

Body: Ok, so my good friend turned me onto this new band The Libertines. And may I say... freakin' AWESOME!! It has been so long since I heard songs sooo good and sooo rockin' that I have to blast it and actually jump around and dance and shake my booty! Seriously, this band rocks, and I mean that cool old fashioned funk edgey raw type of rock, with the catchiest hooks, but pure music all the way thru. An album that will make your head bop and foot tap involuntarily, for sure. Everyone should run out and buy it NOW!! You will NOT be dissappointed!

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I never wrote that you gaylord.

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

:)

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm curious as to what people dislike about the Libertines. Even if I didn't like them I would probably admit that they do what they do well. (But I do like them even though I don't generally like what they do.) (And of course they're fake. But all the pro-prefab dirtyboy-pop-rock arguments have already been made in favor of the Strokes, so I'll spare you.)

And re: coldplay, Trust me, when you have to listen to American MOR radio for hours on end they stick out like a motherfucking beacon of hope. Much better than John Mayer, and that's all I really ask for from a rock band.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

coldplay are fine.

cºzen (Cozen), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

libertines are fine, from what i've heard.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

And how are The Libertines fake? Considering the on going soap opera I'd say they're pretty real.

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

So what you're saying is, soap operas are real.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Chris Martin influenced by Jay Z huh??

'i got 99 problems but my vapid talentless blubbing A-list bitch ain't one hit me!!'

john clarkson, Thursday, 22 July 2004 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Much better than John Mayer, and that's all I really ask for from a rock band.

NEW EXTREME OF PITY DISCOVERED

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 22 July 2004 08:38 (twenty-one years ago)

the libertines' accents aren't very real!

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 22 July 2004 09:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I read that as "much better than John MAJOR".
