"This October, Matador will be releasing a double CD 10th anniversary edition of Pavement's fabulous 2nd album, 'Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain'. In addition to a remastered version of the original album, we'll be including a number of extras including alternate takes/mixes, and previously unreleased songs. Think "The Great Lost Pavement Album" --- literally nobody has ever heard these songs before. Package will be an embossed, die-cut slipcase. Liner notes from SM, Spiral Stairs, and Gerard Cosloy."

"The Great Lost Pavement Album"? Anybody in the know care to elaborate?

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a Kinks reference, pumpkin.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha "literally nobody"

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, it's been a looooooooong time since anyone called me that.

I should remember you but don't; did you have a different name on the FMBB?

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, "the bra-burning corpse"

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

hahahahaha!

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

aww man - i cant wait for this.

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

hstencil's laughter cubed!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

What the fuck do they need to remaster it for? It sounds fine as it is already.

Serya (Z_Ayres), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

okay, now i remember. how's it going? drop me an email.

i've actually been thinking about going by that or a new alias here.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean, itll sound somewhat better, but the real treat is all the extra tracks and notes. the slanted & enchanted deluxe ed. was really really great, and its exciting to imagine CRCR given that treatment. ill be excited about the WZ reissue, too...

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm of the opinion w/r/t this recent rash of 10yr anniversary remasters/reissues/double disc sets/whatevers that it's worth the money if there's at least a good 25-60 minutes of songs that were impossible to find or rare or just forgotten about. Otherwise, I feel as though I'm being ripped off.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

which was why i refused to by the slanted one. i had it on cd, and westing, and watery, and the old live bootleg, and an old boot of the peel sessions, and an mp3 comp with the b-sides, so what, there was like 10 minutes of negligable stuff i didn't have.

it would've been so much nicer if they'd hired some of the fan club members to compile a big 4 disc box of the b-sides & non-westing eps, and crammed it with live stuff and demos, all that scraggly goodness, those innumerable live-only songs and dorky covers, and then after that let them look through the vaults at the demos and outtakes and done another box set of that stuff; and reissued the lps in thick vinyl, and done a few normal complete live concerts as well, and made a best of cd/dvd

mig (mig), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

and they could release it in a gigantic wooden box inlaid with gold..

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard that it is going to be made of manna.

dean? (deangulberry), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Good to see Pavement are still ripping off the Fall - providing extra-super-deluxe-bonus track additions of albums you already have that add pretty much fuck-all.

Sasha (sgh), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I will buy it.

artdamages (artdamages), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Yah, that "literally nobody" thing is a larf. Pavement never listened to these tracks? Or does this imply that they are a bunch of nobodys? haha.

good thing i haven't owned a copy of CRCR for a few years. I'll get this one, but just because I need another copy anyways.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I suppose it'll have the rest of the Peel Session stuff, plus "Haunt You Down"/"Jam Kids," etc... I would have greatly preferred one big rarities thing, as mig describes, to this piecemeal approach, but I guess this is a more reliable stream of income when "Preston School of Industry" isn't paying the bills.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Why is everyone so angry on these boards? You don't have to buy the new/recycled CRCR album if you don't want to, little sweet ones. Stephen will not come to your house and kill you if you don't. I'm buying it because I lost my original copy. So I'm happy happy happy! :(

Gilles Meloche (Gilles Meloche), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

5x xpost

haha! if you didn't want to buy it, you shouldn't have read the thread!!

seriously though, i have/had a lot of this stuff but all strewn about on vinyl, mp3, cassette etc so i was/will be glad to have it all in one package. or maybe its just nostaglia a reminder of good good times

jimmy crackhorn, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Stephen will not come to your house and kill you if you don't.

I think he'd be really dissappointed in me though.

artdamages (artdamages), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think the fop could muster up the strength!

morris pavilion (samjeff), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah is probably to busy listening to some shitty obscure folk album.

artdamages (artdamages), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Matador gonna do this with every fucking Pavement album? Are we gonna get Terror Twilight Deluxe in 2009?

btw, anyone planning on getting that "Bee Thousand Director's Cut" triple LP?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i think all your reactions are pretty funny considering the slanted reissue was one of the better reissues of all time with a swag of bonus stuff and high-quality version of those bootleg songs.. and at a good price too.. i dont really think you can fault matador's reissue policy..

chris andrews (fraew), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, and they are going make a quintiple disc set based on the single for 'Love me Do' because of that suitcase they just found.

Gilles Meloche (Gilles Meloche), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the S and E reissue rocked and I go it for cheap cheap.

Gilles Meloche (Gilles Meloche), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I wasn't complaining about luxe and reduxe. I needed a new Watery Domestic and the B-sides(especially "Sue Me Jack") Peel tracks and live show are cool to have, even though I already used to have that show on mp3, it was deleted long ago.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

You gotta admit, chris, "reissuing" 10-year-old, still-in-print albums is a bit funny.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax! have you made sweet love to pavement as someone (j.w.?) has claimed today?

gygax! have you made sweet love to pavement as someone (j.w.?) has claimed today?

it was very difficult to track down the elusive mark ibold but yes, today i made whoopee with each member of pavement (and i'd like to thank united airlines for their on-time service as well).

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

don't be coy--you know full well it was gary young!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

morris pavilion (samjeff), Friday, 24 September 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

"TIME AFTER TIME"! WAS MY LEAST FAVORITE SONG! "TIME AFTER TIME" WAS MY LEAST FAVORITE SONG!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 24 September 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

21 on disc 2 would seem to be the unlisted "rain ammunition"-esque instrumental from the cut yr hair 12".

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 24 September 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

"time after time" is better than "little america".

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 24 September 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Also better than "Second Guessing" and "Pretty Persuasion."

morris pavilion (samjeff), Friday, 24 September 2004 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

nice

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 24 September 2004 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

It's nice that a larger slice of the world will get to hear "Haunt You Down" - it's a pretty remarkable song (although the lyric is a bit louche).

Also, "Tartyr Martyr." I've always wanted to hear that redone with party horns.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Friday, 24 September 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

GOD BLESS THAT SPLEEF IN MY MOUTH/OR SHOULD I SAY JAH BABY?

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 24 September 2004 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

JAH vs. JAW?

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 24 September 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I am super psyched for this, and for the fact that Malkmus is quoted in Pitchfork today as saying they could do this on every LP up to "Brighten the Corners," where they apparently have tons of songs "better than the ones on the album" !! I am all for these reissues, 100%.

Taxi Dancing in the Soft Prison (Ben Boyer), Friday, 24 September 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

But seriously, can the words "great" and "Pavement album" really be used in the same sentence?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 24 September 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

they just were, by you.

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 24 September 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

ZING ZANG ZONG

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 24 September 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

heh.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 24 September 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

hoorah! i have this bootleg called 'stuff up the cracks' that has some of this stuff, but i've never heard a lot of it. 'rain ammunition' was my least favorite song, 'rain ammunition' was my least favorite song

6335, Friday, 24 September 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow I love "Strings of Nashville" -- haven't heard that in a long time (buried with the 7-inches somewhere).

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 24 September 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I have that one on an ancient mix tape.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 24 September 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

?

Is it not on the b-side of Gold Soundz?

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 24 September 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that "Stuff Up the Cracks" bootleg is legendary -- it's so excellent to think that this has so many of those amazing songs but in better sound quality.

Taxi Dancing in the Soft Prison (Ben Boyer), Friday, 24 September 2004 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes "Strings of Nashville" is the "Gold Soundz" B-side -- just saying I haven't put the single on for some time.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 24 September 2004 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Ahmagad I'm filled with so much joy thinking about it. I just can't wait. I also think it was pretty neat that Malkmus in the same Pitchfork feature mentioned above said that a Pavement reunion was not impossible. Actually just reading that gave me goosebumps, but I'm such a sucker for reunions.

What Gold Soundz-single contained 5-4 Vocal? I only have Exit Theory on mine.

strom (strom), Friday, 24 September 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

GOD BLESS THAT SPLEEF IN MY MOUTH/OR SHOULD I SAY JAH BABY?
OTM!

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 24 September 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"Nail Clinic," "Strings of Nashville"... so good and mysterious. (Though wasn't "Raft" sort of an inferior remake of "Nail Clinic"?)

morris pavilion (samjeff), Friday, 24 September 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

there will be a reunion in maybe 4 or 5 years. Gotta give time for Malkie's abysmal solo career to stop generating $$$$ and for Spiral to get tired of running American Grease and playing with Oranger. And of course, it will be done for the money, and it will totally suck. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 24 September 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Shhhhh.

John Cei Douglas (John Cei Douglas), Saturday, 25 September 2004 10:35 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
The first track from disc 2, "All my friends" is now available for download at Matador's website.

I'm very excited about this now, and cannot for the life of me work out why I wasn't before!

John Cei Douglas (John Cei Douglas), Friday, 15 October 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

That song is great.
Gary Young on drums???

Magic City (ano ano), Friday, 15 October 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

An early version of "All My Friends" was bootlegged (most famously on Stuff Up The Cracks) under the name "Sebadoh/Helen Stones". The last 1:12 of the song was released on the Gold Soundz single as "Exit Theory (Edit)".

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 15 October 2004 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

NOT A COLLECTOR
BUT A TRAINSPOTTER

Helios Creed (orion), Friday, 15 October 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I never got a copy of this one on CD (had S&E copied *poor student get-out clause* :P had CRCR and Wowee Zowee on original tape, Watery Domestic 12" etc)... relistened to it after getting the previous re-issue & realised I wanted this one too. Decided to wait.

The wait is almost over! I'm psyched! bollox to the rest of you whiners.
