Does anyone have this?

I need to buy it.

Marc-, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

has anything he's done after the Glow pt. 2 been as good as that album? I hated the Microphones Mt. Eerie album; what else have they/he/whoever released?

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

live in japan

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the Mt. Eerie album except the opening tribal drumming
which goes on for far too long and is frankly no good.

But yeah, Glow pt. 2 is the best one.

Marc-, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah that drum thing is the reason I didn't like that record, it was hard to get past. I hold out hope that he will make a followup to Glow pt. 2 that is so beautiful and immense that will utterly devour my soul.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I seem to be the only person who thinks "It Was Hot, We Stayed in the Water" is the Microphones best record. It doesn't have as much of the prolonged wankery that made the later records progressively harder to listen to. The Glow >>>>>> The Glow Pt. 2.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

You should all download this:

ihttp://www.departmentofsafety.com/art/auction_2004/photos/eerie_cd_two.jpg

It's availiable at http://www.indietorrents.com

I like it.
Too bad it's extremely limited though.

Marc-, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I like IWHWSITW too. I'm not sure which I like more.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, IWHWSITW has one of the more beautiful album covers in recent memory:

I think it kind of looks like someone just applied all prefab photoshop filters at once.

Marc-, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm gonna put up one of the tracks from "Seven New Songs" on StG tomorrow... The record's pretty good, but I can see why it's not a proper album.

It's interesting that you're a big IWHWSITW fan, Scott. And I like that you are. :) I really don't think The Glow, Pt. 2 is a particularly great album, and have a lot more interest in its predecessors. When a song is a simple thing (as a lot of Phil's are), it's kind of annoying when it gets so lathered up in production stuff.

That said, I'm the weirdo whose favourite Microphones album, by far, is Mt. Eerie.

Sean M (Sean M), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

"I think it kind of looks like someone just applied all prefab photoshop filters at once."

Hey, I didn't say it was hard to make, I said it was pretty.

Looking forward to that post tomorrow, Sean, thanks! I think of IWHWSITW as a summer album (albeit a summer night album), and the glow pt. 2 as an autumn album (using autumn not pretentiously, just so no one thinks I am comparing it to a Fall album).

Scott CE (Scott CE), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Sean, do you have the original cd of "Seven new songs"?

Marc-, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

No I do not, sadly!

Sean M (Sean M), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

1) the IWHWSITHW cover was made by cutting up photos and scotch taping them together. Nothing digital until the last stage of the process.
2) the drum jam at the beginning of Mt. Eerie makes a lot more sense when you understand the narrative of the album. It's all explained in a book Phil made and self-published called "Headwaters: an attempted explanation of Mt. Eerie by the Microphones". It also came with a CDR of Phil's influences on that album, ranging from Antonio Carlos Jobim, to Neil Young, to Sade, to Timbaland. I am not making this up. However the book is out of print, and probably impossible to find.
3) I just spent the weekend at What-the-heck-fest in Anacortes. The Mount Eerie show was excellent. Phil played guitar, Karl Blau played percussion on an empty water cooler jug, and Genevieve Elverum (whose band is called Woelv) sang along. Meanwhile about 20 of us sang backup and bounced basketballs in unison as a percussion ensemble.
4) I thought Live in Japan was just okay but I'm really extremely excited about the forthcoming live triple LP on Burnt Toast Vinyl.
5) Phil's new songs are clearly his best. But I like his wife's music even more these days. It's equal parts Bjork, Cat Power, & Julie Doiron.

Kevin Erickson, Wednesday, 21 July 2004 03:43 (twenty-one years ago)

It's equal parts Bjork, Cat Power, & Julie Doiron

and in mumbly, incomprehensible french!

(but it's still altogether lovely, in small doses.)

"Wooly Mammoth's Absence" (from Seven Songs) is now online here for about a week.

Sean M (Sean M), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

viva song island. who is his wife?

chicken tonight (chicken tonight), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

dude. phil's married? when did this happen?

song islands > mt. eerie > it was hot > the glow pt. 2 > live in japan (which should have never come out)

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

. It's all explained in a book Phil made and self-published called "Headwaters: an attempted explanation of Mt. Eerie by the Microphones"

this kind of thing kind of annoys the shit out of me about the microphones/mt eerie too. I understand the scarcity of the earlier stuff because no-one knew who he/they were and things were done in limited runs, but why continue to make very limited pressings of things after you've received this much attention? It's like you're calculatedly playing into the hands of collector scum and screwing your fans. At least get a website and put up digital versions of the songs. We do have the web now!

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

He married Genevieve within the past eight months, I think. She's a Montreal comic artist and musician. They met (I believe) when she attended the What-The-Heck Fest in 2002 or 2003.

Sean M (Sean M), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

kyle is right on. playing to the collector scum, even if its unintentional, is always trés assinine. see also "weird americana" or "new folk" or whatever you want to call it.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, IWHWSITW has one of the more beautiful album covers in recent memory

The vinyl was a gatefold jacket with a "pop up" center which was pretty pathetic. Somebody should get him a Parliament LP to show how it's supposed to be done.

Vic Funk, Wednesday, 21 July 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

for all the real microphones collector scum:
at this year's what the heck fest there was an art show of "lost record covers", most of which were for sale.
elvrum did one that had a story about some hike he did written on the cover in pen.
however, it also came with a the only existing copy of some record that he recorded right after the hike!!! some guy name caleb from vancouver bought it for $39.

personally, i think the microphones/mt erie are pleasant enough, but not so hot live. little wings and karl blau are ten times the song writers and performers.

certainly the "playing into collector scum" is quite unintentional. the entire anacortes WA community tries to do this large artistic output thing (blau is trying an album a month). due to a large following of wiener kids with fledgling labels, elvrum has the opportunity to release a lot of records so he just goes ahead and does. I would say that the "labels" are to blame for the playing into collector scum.

ddd, Wednesday, 21 July 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I found Little Wings highly annoying live, though I'll admit I'm not partial to hippie bullshit.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

One reason Phil makes things is in limited runs is because that is all he can afford to do time-wise and financial-wise. The Headwaters book was all made by hand with a xerox machine and watercolors and a CD burner. The dude doesn't have time to crank out more and more copies of that stuff, when he's moved on to new things. He's very dedicated to keeping everything honest by doing it all himself, and i don't think he's under any obligation to outsource it just so it becomes more widely available.

That said, I am sure the "seven songs" will find a wider release. So will the 2 songs 12" record that was included in the gallery show. That was just a quick pressing so he'd have something new to sell on the australia tour.

In any case, everything is widely available via soulseek.

Kevin Erickson, Wednesday, 21 July 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha. Pitchfork has a review. Why exactly they're reviewing something that sold out in Australia and won't be released in the U.S. for quite some time, (2005?) I am not sure.

Also reviewer dude seem to be under the mistaken impression that the Mount Eerie/Microphones name change involved some kind of lineup change. Hahaha.

ten months pass...
Doesn't anyone have any info on Phil's new album "No Flashlight"?
I heard it's supposed to come out in August.

Marc-, Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:03 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
No Flashlight has the largest album cover of all time, 3 feet by 5 feet folded to 12" size, with detailed explanations of the album. it will be unveiled at What the Heck Fest this july

the japanese version has a bunch of extra songs

meanwhile Phil made "seven new songs" available for free download at archive.org!

Anyone heard the newish "Wind's Poem" album?

Pretty interesting stuff, Elverum's apparently been inspired by black metal to make something a bit like Xasthur's stuff (according to Pitchfork or summat). Can't say I'm feeling the black metal vibe, but there's certainly some heavy inspiration from drone - which works surprisingly well with his light folksy vocals. The whole thing becomes particularly cool when synths are introduced: check out the variations over some Twin Peaks theme on "Between Two Mysteries". Only resource I could find was on Spotify:

For those of us in the US, the album's on Lala too:

the new record is WONDERFUL. love this murmured approach to black metal, and the new textures Phil's's found with marimbas and synths.

the total revelation is the crazy fucking doomy r&b tune called "Ancient Questions" -- ONLY that it sucks in my mp3 version! the vinyl kicks, but the mp3/cd mastering leaves it feeling floppy, with none of the oomph.

sean gramophone, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 15:10 (sixteen years ago)

I saw them live a few months ago, and really liked their set, which was apparently stuff from this album.

provates: feminine plural of provato (sarahel), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 15:15 (sixteen years ago)

The closing song on Wind's Poem is one of the best songs I've heard this year, especially when you're walking around on slightly cool, windy nights.

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 11 November 2009 15:28 (sixteen years ago)

Version of "Wind's Dark Poem", though it sounds a bit too sharp to me.

Does anyone know if Clear Moon is only going to be vinyl and digital? I can't seem to find a CD version anywhere, not even direct from his label.

Digital and vinyl only, btw. But Clear Moon and Ocean Roar are both fantastic. I was really disappointed with the direction he took after the album called Mount Eerie, but the last three have really put him back on track.

New record due out in a few weeks.

Enjoying this song and video.
