i just saw an advert for it in this month's issue of hip hop connection. it's going to contain 'rock and rap writing' apparently.....

they have a preview site at:

www.kingsmagazine.com

thesplooge (thesplooge), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

No, is it US or UK based?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

UK based. the site seems to have all the info. not sure who's involved in it.

thesplooge (thesplooge), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone remember Kingsize magazine? Seems a lot like that...

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

kingsize sounds familiar but i dont remember seeing it. kings sounds like its trying to cross a bit too much ground, or find common ground between audiences that might be be there. then again, its a mag, not an artist, and i havent even seen it yet!

thesplooge (thesplooge), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

the interview quotes are promising...

stevie (stevie), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i saw this ad aswell. emailed em, nothing back. expected several of you muckers to be onboard .. but i guess not ?

mark e (mark e), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

the quotes do look cool. the TV on the radio and interpol ones were amusing.

thesplooge (thesplooge), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

more info ! its a spin off from Hip Hop Connection .. buts thats all i know ..

mark e (mark e), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

so hip hop journos covering rock and indie? hmmm. will it be rap-ist i wonder.....

thesplooge (thesplooge), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

someone i know said geek-rapper-don edan is on the cover. not sure about this though.

thesplooge (thesplooge), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

man! the puma repro to vice's vintage

prima fassy (mwah), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

that analogy does not make it sound good!

thesplooge (thesplooge), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

reading the live and shave in LA thread, i wonder if edan could be called cheese-rap.

thesplooge (thesplooge), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

stevie - you old friend phillip mlynar is editing it, so i'm sure you'll love it!

Chris Houghton (chrish), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

when is this out?

thesplooge (thesplooge), Thursday, 29 July 2004 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

aug 3rd is the date i got told.

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 29 July 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

You can tell it's tied to Hip Hop Connection, because the first issue has articles on Ghostface, Edan, and Larry David. All it needs now are the words "pimp cup" to appear repatedly and some gratuitous Arsenal bashing and they're there.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 29 July 2004 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll wait and see til the first issue comes out. i hear it comes with a free mini-pimp cup.

thesplooge (thesplooge), Thursday, 29 July 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

just to prevent any confusion, the free pimp cup thing is a lie.

thesplooge (thesplooge), Thursday, 29 July 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

thinking about this now, is it just me or has HHC gotten kinda boring in places?

thesplooge (thesplooge), Thursday, 29 July 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I think part of the problem is rappers are inherently shit interviewees. Plus not enough Fat Lace style japery in recent issues either, that "great lost hip-hop albums" thing from a few months back (including MC Steven, the rapping B&Q employee) was the last "great" article they did.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 29 July 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

part of the other problem might be that the rappers arent getting asked anything decent. most rap writers dont really seem to probe their targets very much at all. they either cover the same old shit or go completley the other way a la fat lace (which i loved). i dont wanna read only japery, but im not getting much interesting 'serious' hip hop coverage from HHC either.

thesplooge (thesplooge), Thursday, 29 July 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i just saw this today from a colleague! it must be out in the shops now.

splooge (thesplooge), Monday, 2 August 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

who's stocking it, oh viral marketeer?

stevie (stevie), Monday, 2 August 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

dunno. smiths maybe?

splooge (thesplooge), Monday, 2 August 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

What's a pimp cup?

amp, Friday, 6 August 2004 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I supect it's a cup for pimps.

addy, Friday, 6 August 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

"like its trying to cross a bit too much ground, or find common ground between audiences that might be be there."

The editorial in it explains the coverage angle pretty well and, really, the whole rock and rap stance is pretty much what ego-trip did and that was one of the greatest magazines ever made. If it's anything like that it'll be cool.

CocoRose, Saturday, 7 August 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

it's got some great interviews in it, especially the tv on the radio one. worth checking out.

biggerboi, Sunday, 8 August 2004 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Flicked through it today - very nice design that sort of straggles the stylish/readable divide.

AdamA, Sunday, 8 August 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I emailed to ask about writing for them and they said no. Therefore I think it's shite.

BeesFan, Sunday, 8 August 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

what was the reason for declining your offer?

splooge (thesplooge), Sunday, 8 August 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

said they wanted to see some examples of work, which i thought was a bit off for a new mag.

BeesFan, Sunday, 8 August 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

EVERY mag needs to see examples of work!

splooge (thesplooge), Monday, 9 August 2004 07:54 (twenty-one years ago)

well i love them already. see links page. i have no shame.

mark e (mark e), Monday, 9 August 2004 07:57 (twenty-one years ago)

said they wanted to see some examples of work, which i thought was a bit off for a new mag.

You will nver get to write for anyone unless you can show what you can do. i had some kid want to write for looselips, and i asked him to send in some samples, which he never replied to. a couple of weeks later he sent me an email saying, "any interview you want me to do?". crazy.

stevie (stevie), Monday, 9 August 2004 09:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Yet another reason why blogs are useful.

MC in summer 2002, calls up Paul Lester:
MC: Fuckin' job, cunt.
PL: Show me what you can do.
MC: Behold The Church Of Me!
PL: Sir, truly I am not worthy. But can you do 100-word downpagers?
MC: Try me!
PL: Do I look like a High Court judge?
MC: You used to look like Carol Decker!
The rest is hysteria.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 9 August 2004 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

well i just thought cos they were new they would be open to help. i did tell them i've wrote for some websites before

BeesFan, Monday, 9 August 2004 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

send them links to your work, beesfan. how are they going to know what sort of writer you are if they havent read your work? theyre not going to take you on just because youve written to them. no mag is THAT desperate. its just like going for any other job, your writing is your CV.

splooge (thesplooge), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

If anyone wants to just put a pile of money in my lap then I will gladly write somethign for them

AdamA, Monday, 9 August 2004 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, I got around to it! ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

four months pass...
what happened to this mag?

wesley, Friday, 7 January 2005 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

last issue "Autumn Issue" had that useless Baggy retro band Kasabien on the front cover.

http://www.kingsmagazine.com/

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 7 January 2005 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

didnt see that one. not the most inspiring lineup, except for a few names on there. no news about the next issue on the site so maybe that's it. oh well.

wesley, Friday, 7 January 2005 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

The last issue contained a great article with Dizzee Rascal where he appeared to be under the impression that the Kray twins were still alive.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 7 January 2005 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha!

.adam (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 January 2005 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Dom Passantino, Monday, 27 August 2007 10:41 (eighteen years ago)

I love "rap" music.

dell, Monday, 27 August 2007 10:49 (eighteen years ago)

r|t|c, Monday, 27 August 2007 10:53 (eighteen years ago)

r|t|c, Monday, 27 August 2007 10:54 (eighteen years ago)
