i reaaally prefer the swell maps stuff.. there should be a disclaimer that all post SW sudden stuff is totally different, even the jacobites stuff.

disclaimer - it's nothing like swell maps.
sort of like the "folk rock" songs on mid 60s stones albums or sloppy versions of power ballad type #s or, oh yeah that's what it's like , it's like johnny thunders.

I'd recommend the Waiting on Egypt/The Bible Belt 2CD reissue from a few years back. These are his first two solo albums, with bonus tracks. Seeing how the Swell Maps are the ones performing on some of the tracks, this might be the best gateway from the SM to NS rather than one of his later albums (if that's holding you back, based on some of the responses). Nikki Sudden is awesome. He may be among the godfathers of the bizarre strum & clatter, "new wierd america" free folk thing that is quite the rage these days (and understandably so). Swell Maps are awesome throughout. Texas & Robespierre's Velvet Basement are (arguably) the best of the post-Maps crop, which is sizeable, and varies from drunken Faces-esque slopfests to extremely drunken Stones 'Beggar's Banquet'era acoustic wailers to experimental dulcimer strums with the noises of freighters in the background - sometimes during the course of one record. You might want to avoid the overly slick Jewel Thief record & the very uneven Crown of Thorns, but other than that I say go for it where Nikki, Jacobites, and Dave Kusworth are involved. VIrtually everything has a certain ragged charm, at the very least.

Waiting For Egypt is really good. So's Bible Belt. I also don't think "it's nothing like Swell Maps" is that accurate, although upthread someone says some of the Swell Maps play on those records, which might be why!

Surprised to learn he did an album (The Jewel Thief) with the R.E.M. guys all over it, at the height of their fame, and I never caught wind of it. Looks like it was only released in the UK(?), which may partly explain it.
