ELLIOTT SMITH

Set for 18th October 2004, Elliott Smith's first posthumous album will be released world-wide by UK label Domino, bar in the US where it will be released by Anti-Records. Titled "From A Basement On The Hill" the 19 track album follows the singer-songwriter's tragic death last year, and will be the fourth album to be released by Elliott on Domino.

The keyword in that is "first".

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

so who does this elliott smith rap like?

harshaw (jube), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't believe this shit, but I've had numerous hard core hip-hop fans tell me that they actually believe that a bunch of posthumous releases actually indicated faking of death by the artist i.e. Biggie's really dead because only one posthumous CD came out, but Tupac's still alive (and living in Jamaica, the story always goes) cuz he's got like 10 of them, as if stockpiling vocal takes and demos for later use was some kind of unheard of concept.

Subthread: If ES faked his death(ha!) what exotic location would he be hiding out in?

Gilles Meloche (Gilles Meloche), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

whats the absolute latest then, on the story that he may have
not actually killed himself? this look'd like tittla-tattle until the
guardian featured it big time all over a friday section about 4 months
back. so...wtf?

he's probably the only oscar-nominated
person i've been in the same room as.

"Muslimgauze" must've put out dozens of albums since "he" died.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Thursday, 22 July 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

how much of the record was finished before his passing? i.e. how much futzing around on it has been done since he died?

three weeks pass...
what sounds like the finished version of this has leaked. anyone else heard it? thoughts?

It flows well. It doesn't sound like an album patched together after someone's death, so I'm inclined to believe them when they say that the record was basically done except for the mixing. It's not a smooth or overly produced sounding album either; the fidelity and tracking sounds like more time was spent on it than, say, either/or, but it's not a lush studio package like XO. It's not hopelessly sad, it doesn't really make me maudlin; it sounds alive, like another good solid release in Elliott's catalogue. For a few seconds listening to it yesterday I thought "these songs are going to sound great live with a band!" before I remembered.

controversial comment: King's Crossing sounds like Bright Eyes.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

also, there are only 15 tracks on this (and one of them is just some bird noises), and since the original word was that there was enough material for a double (and even the press release above stated there are 19 tracks), I'm sure there will be one more album.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
yes sir i shall ignore.

Caitlin O'Neil (kurdtkobain205), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

twelve years pass...

I love this cover of "Little One" by Sky Ferreira and the dude from DIIV. can't stand DIIV but I love SF and hope her new record isn't frozen in legal limbo anymore...
