"Terrorbird" -- new full length from this L.A. band on 5RC/Kill Rock Stars; some insane business. 33 tracks, running about 40 minutes. Noisy as hell but also super melodic. Has anyone else heard this? Definitely one of my favorites of the year so far, which is always nice from something that comes totally out of nowhere.

I don't mean to sound like a street-teamer or anything, but I got this promo and I am completely obsessed after just a couple spins. Search, seek, classic.

By their own account, "you might like us if you like Fat Day, Japanther, Ex Models, xbxrx, Animal Collective, Sparks, Jay-Z, Monorchid, R. Kelly, Andrew WK or the Ex."

I think it's officially out next week...you can get a couple great MP3s at www.mae-shi.com. Maybe I'm nuts, but this is sounding really excellent to me right now... especially "Vampire Beats." Go get that one. Fuckin' A.

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

It's okay. I put up there most recent megamix on the noisedude board which I like better.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the megamix a bunch too. It roxx. But then I'm a big fuggin' nerd, so i would like it. The album kinda bugz me.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, weird-o-rama. The mega mix gave me a huge headache (every 5 secs. I was fallin behind trying to place shit), but I love the album so far.

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't listen to the mp3, but i totally like all those bands!

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Sparks!? fuck Sparks!! that shit makes me feel all sick to my stomach and head. gygax, that day we drunk all those Sparks in the park, i went to a party that night at the Sparks SF marketing dudes house and had more. i thought i was gonna die of caffiene poisoning. then the next day i had two Thai iced teas and my head exploded.

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, "we drank all those Sparks in the park" = 3 Sparks split 3 ways. Didn't you stay at home Friday too?

FWIW: I have been off caffeine this week. The Sparks comedown is a bit of a swift descent.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

no way man. you had one sparks. i had i think 2.5 (remember i brought a few). and then that night i had another one.

one is more than enough.

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm listening to the Mae Shi mixtape and it sounds like they've had more than a few sparks.

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

you're right, there were a total of 7 sparks... and there were none left by sundown. I think I had 2 now that i think about it (the same i had thursday night when i slept a grand total of oh 2 hours maybe).

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

this Mae Shi mixtape is the bizness. i know every single song

JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

It's my #1 for 2004, take that Jess Harvell.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

What's on the megamix?
They're touring with Rapider Than Horsepower - neat!

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

The megamix is 2-4 second snippets of tons of different songs in all sorts of genres spliced together to maintain a forward moving, constantly changing beat. It's very different, but as I said upthread, it got so wonky for me that I had to shut it off... but, damn it, I love the album so far. It's like a harder, more raw Deerhoof in many ways.

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, that's some hot shit...esp. liked the Vampire Beats mp3...

Hmm...what do they remind me of? Maybe like Deerhoof meets the Dismemberment Plan or something like that? US Maple meets Les Savy Fav?

xpost
damn oki doki beat me to the deerhoof comparison

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 22 July 2004 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I couldn't really get a handle on that megamix. I kept waiting for it to be something more than just random snippets of songs. Oh well. I have the album coming in the mail, I figure it'll be better.

Xii (Xii), Thursday, 22 July 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't decide on the megamix either. Its sort of fun, but also annoying. I couldn't listen to it in one sitting. xpost

artdamages (artdamages), Thursday, 22 July 2004 01:45 (twenty-one years ago)

They're really working the net writers. They even offered to send me a copy. (I accepted since one of the members looks a bit like me).

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 22 July 2004 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

decide for yourself: get the megamix here.

They ARE working the net writers.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 22 July 2004 07:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Jessica Hopper doing the PR for this perchance? I might have to try and blag this fucker

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 22 July 2004 08:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Totally into the album, so much well intentioned screaming.
Do they pull it off live?

pitwithspikes (pitwithspikes), Thursday, 22 July 2004 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

They're appearing tonight at Ghettogloss (a gallery across the street from Rockaway records). I am carless as of now so I won't be there.

I just listened to the CD.

more songs to dl at their site: http://www.mae-shi.com/terrorbird.htm

artdamages (artdamages), Thursday, 29 July 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Fluxblog put up another track today -- one of the catchier ones. I love this record.

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 29 July 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Thats odd, the track he has is listed as "Power to the People" (Public Enemy. I think), but the closest thing I have to that on this cd is "Power to the Power Bite Two".

Just checked and its the same song.

artdamages (artdamages), Thursday, 29 July 2004 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw The Mae Shi at The Knitting Factory a little over a year ago and they were unbelievably awful. It's the only show I've ever walked out on.

They might have gotten better, though. There's no way they could have gotten worse.

Talent Explosion (Talent Explosion), Thursday, 29 July 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

They prefer playing non traditional venues, and I think the Knitting Factory is particulary stuffy for a band like them. I have seen them be awesome.

Yeah, Art Dam - he just labeled the track wrong (and I tried to correct him, I was wrong...). He also spelled the band's name wrong... but the song's there, and it's great.

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 29 July 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that one was originally called "Power to the People." Granted, I don't have the album, but I am pretty sure that they were playing a song that was called that around the time of their live KXLU set a few months back.

Also, the Knitting Factory is not a place that you want to see The Mae Shi at. See them in the front room of the Smell.

dean? (deangulberry), Thursday, 29 July 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 29 July 2004 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

dean? (deangulberry), Thursday, 29 July 2004 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 29 July 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Did they take your Wasabi peas and copies of Giant Robot from you?

dean? (deangulberry), Thursday, 29 July 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

no but they did ask how come the interpol bassist lookalike with the lead foot wasn't there.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 29 July 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

nice catfight

mae shi Echo tomorrow fri but my barbarian silliness at Redcat will win over that.

Thea (Thea), Thursday, 29 July 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

"interpol bassist lookalike"

Where did that come from?

"lead foot"

Ha. You took that one personal, eh, "slowpoke"?

dean? (deangulberry), Thursday, 29 July 2004 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Thea (Thea), Thursday, 29 July 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

The past four Mondays at Spaceland have been that of an interest. In my case, I got to kick it with my comadre, meet new people, talk shit, bump into old friends, frown at the ones I didn't wish to see, talk more shit (in spanish too)... but overall the passionate nights of body sweat, aching feet, scratchy voices, and an energy that you could still feel the next day just can't compare to any other recent local gig.

Ambitious Outsiders notified you, alerted you, warned you and spanked you for not attending any of the residency shows this past month. What more can you ask for? The Blood Arm rocks, they don't copy anybody, their shows are exhilarating, and just a lot fun before fully beginning the work-school week.

I told you about the flying shoes, the flying white boys, the mullets, Nathaniel Fregoso flying too, and the Swan Piñata that maybe you just didn't get to see. Because you didn't go... And we even gave you images of how we turned into wild animals.

But, if you didn't go this time, you should regret it. As we (AO staffers and a comadre) walked towards the Blood Arm table which was closest to the Arcade Game that is stuck next to the bar...we glared what we thought would be impossible.. the sight seemed almost too incredible.. too fictional to believe.. is that he? Could that be him? Are my eyes okay? Did I drink too much? What did I drink again? Is.. is that really him? Is that... Carlos D. from Interpol?

Yes my fellow web homies, indeed we Ambitious-Outsiders saw one of the fundamental veins of one of the most influential bands of all time ...Interpol. And he was playing a round of Galaga.... We were nervous, this was our big chance! What do we say? Do we smile? Do we look normal?

It took us a moment to come up with the bravery and ask him for a picture as he played the game...and with a smile he said "yes".. Click. Click. Click. See the pictures for yourself, and hit yourself on the head.

Thank you Blood Arm for making the past four Mondays seem like a Friday through Sunday deal all rolled into one bottle of Rolling Rock.

thea, i went to go get a sandwhich around the corner from work and Jessica (forget her last name) recognized me from KCRW and we chatted for a while.

JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 29 July 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Jessica is my little sister I never had. She used to housesit for me and thank got we aren't the same size or half my clothes would've been to about 16 clubs and parties per weekend. We miss her terribly.

Therefore, Candace is my mother I never had? Not quite, but I miss her too.

Ned, you know you are the king. Shame on you.

Thea (Thea), Friday, 30 July 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

ned, gygax and i were talking about you last night in the car. my wife is organizing a party for the opening of a new Niketown store in South Coast Plaza. she asked if we knew anyone in the OC and your name came up. it's mainly for women, but i'm sure you'd either enjoy going, or know people who would. yes?

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know how the Mae Shi got my address, but they just sent me a cd. This is bizarre.

roxymuzak, Monday, 10 March 2008 17:05 (seventeen years ago)

Mackro Mackro, Monday, 10 March 2008 19:21 (seventeen years ago)

though I disagree about the shitty part (except for that new song)

Cliche alert - the first mini-LP is clearly the best.

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Tuesday, 7 February 2012 20:10 (fourteen years ago)

yeah they were great when i saw them in toronto a few years ago. they threw a tarp over the audience and ran around playing songs inside it. didn't know they had broken up.

rent, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 03:47 (fourteen years ago)

when i saw them they did the tarp-over-audience too. great fun.
