not only do i find that the portryal of unpleasant characteristics provides no barrier to enjoying a particular piece of music, it actually makes it more enjoyable. anyone else feel this way? what is it that makes attitudes i would find repellent in any other context sound so great on record? well?

I find a lot of the over-the-top faux misogyny in grind, hardcore, noise, death metal, etc. hilarious. I also like exaggerated disgust and misanthropy. Even thought I am neigher disgusted with or hateful towards humanity most of the time. But for those magic moments when I want to hail and kill, bring on the hate baby.

Mark E. Smith's misanthropy has to be exaggerated. He couldn't even function in society nor find the will to go on if he was 1/2 as endlessly pissed as he is on record.

I definetly agree. Music you can personally identify with has a time and place, but hearing stuff that comes from a place you find detestable is always refreshing in an odd way. I think a lot of that has to do with surprise.

yeah, i think a lot of journalists really try to collapse the difference between his personality and his personality on record.

i think a lot of successful artists have qualities that in certain contexts can be very unpleasant, and that's to be expected.
