What are the earliest examples of album titles like this (e.g., "Peter Chemist vs. Scientist") that pit two artists against each other? Did it start with dub?

Maybe the new Allmusic is useful for something... or not, depending on how useful you find this...

If you do an album search for "vs" you can then sort the results by year, which I don't think you could do with the old site. The earliest dub album they have named this way is Scientist vs. Prince Jammy from 1980... the earliest remix album looks like 1995's No Protection: Massive Attack vs. Mad Professor.

I wonder if dub or rap battles used this convention first?

lola vs powerman [1969] is a reasonable guess for now, i should think

however, now that i think about it, there were all those late 50s and early 60s lps of, say, the shirelles on side a and maxine brown on side b, one of them might've used a "vs." on the album cover?

i see that i misread the question, disregard lola, sorry

thinking about it a bit more, in the late 60s there were things like lite classical/comedy/bachelor pad type lps that pitted some zany idiot conductor like pdq bach against the songbook of somebody like the beatles or mozart - i know i have seen crap of this sort in my thrift store searches, though i am drawing a blank on any titles right now. anyway, there's another possibility for a vs. title.

sorry, no help am i.
