s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 22 July 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

When will this book end? I'm hungry and I can't stand the smell of sandalwood!

Huck, Thursday, 22 July 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

You're kidding. Are they ever going to have an actual music critic edit a book of music criticism?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 22 July 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Erm, maybe this counts...

"Mickey has written four books documenting his lifelong fascination with the history and mythology of music. These include Drumming at the Edge of Magic, Planet Drum, Spirit into Sound: The Magic of Music, and Songcatchers: In Search of the World’s Music."

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 22 July 2004 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I have the omnibus edition: Songcatchers-Drumming At The Edge Of Planet Drum In The Spirit Of Music With A Drum.

It's 4000 pages long, but it still doesn't explain why he has such a hard time keeping time with that other dude.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 22 July 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

On 60 Minutes the other night he said Phish and Stringcheese Incident were great because they were rescuing "real music" from radio pop. This should be good.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 22 July 2004 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

jaymc, not if they want to sell any copies.

shookout (shookout), Thursday, 22 July 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Do people really buy these books for the editor? Was last year's edition bought by scores of Simpsons fans?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 22 July 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Saxomaphone!

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 22 July 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

God. The choice of Groening was lame, but this is positively paraplegic.

frankE (frankE), Thursday, 22 July 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Phish and Stringcheese Incident were great because they were rescuing "real music" from radio pop.

Jesus.

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 22 July 2004 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

"Phish and Stringcheese Incident were great because they were rescuing "real music" from radio pop."

That's like a hitchhiker being "rescued" by a creepy guy who is going to eat his brains and make a coat out of his skin.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 22 July 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

They should've gotten Mickey Dolenz. He could've gotten Neil Diamond to ghost-edit it for him.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Thursday, 22 July 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I predict a 114 page report on the didgeridoo.

Huck, Thursday, 22 July 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

there's an animal collective piece in there. and i think at least one piece from an ilxor. don't discount ol' mickey.

jess, Thursday, 22 July 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

jess, is it you?

also why are people so into animal collective? i'd rather listen to galaxie 500.

artdamages (artdamages), Thursday, 22 July 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

no, it is not me.

jess, Thursday, 22 July 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

haha i'm not trying to be cryptic either; i just don't remember who it is.

jess, Thursday, 22 July 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i reckon greoning put together a pretty nice edition my self..

chris andrews (fraew), Thursday, 22 July 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Are any of the older editions worth picking up?

artdamages (artdamages), Thursday, 22 July 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Is no one going to pick up on that G500 non-sequitur?

Anyway, I would imagine that the guest editors of this series do not actually do much in the way of hardcore "editing" and even less "selecting."

Also, if anyone from Da Capo happens to see this thread: YOU STILL OWE ME $50 YOU JERKS.

nabiscothingy, Thursday, 22 July 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Is no one going to pick up on that G500 non-sequitur?

I hope so!

artdamages (artdamages), Thursday, 22 July 2004 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm glad music critics aren't Guest Editors--they'd end up with a tedious, PC collection about rockism and mash ups.

shookout (shookout), Thursday, 22 July 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

They should have gotten Bret "The Hitman" Hart.

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 22 July 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

"Vince McMahon Killed Elliot Smith: The Proof"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 22 July 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

five months pass...
JT Leroy's website reports that he's guest-editing the 2005 book.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

He likes Tom Waits

.adam (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

and third eye blind.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I ran across his name this morning (on Bookslut, I think) and had no idea who he was, had no idea there was such a cult devoted to him. Then I read a synopsis of his most recent book and realized I had read an excerpt of it in McSweeney's a year or two ago. I am suspicious of him, but he looks pretty cute.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

(Or at least the photo I saw of him in a blonde wig.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

He is incapable of writing more than half of a good book or story, but he is interesting nonetheless. I think you'd like him.

.adam (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

(OK, other photos of him seem to prove me wrong, he looks sorta creepy. Never mind.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Creepy? As in a Greg Arrak kinda way maybe. He was with Asia Argento if I remember correctly. (Yes, my brain remembers such trivial stuff.)

stevie nixed (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, creepy:

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

(Does he ever not wear those sunglasses?)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

He likes to remain an enigma.

.adam (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Cameron Diaz! This celeb guest editor thing is out of control.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

nice
