I've never heard 'Satellite of Love' by Lou Reed, except for this Dave Pearce version -- how do they compare?

Actually, I was once a student so probably *have* heard the original, but don't remember doing it.

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 22 July 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

did you see 'Velvet Goldmine'?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 22 July 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this the version we were talking about here?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 23 July 2004 07:30 (twenty-one years ago)

They don't compare.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 23 July 2004 07:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Stewart -- yeah (oops).
Spencer -- yeah (can't remember it).

Enrique (Enrique), Friday, 23 July 2004 07:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Dave Pearce version???????

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 23 July 2004 07:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, in a holistic sense.

Enrique (Enrique), Friday, 23 July 2004 07:57 (twenty-one years ago)

In a very real sense.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 23 July 2004 07:58 (twenty-one years ago)

haha there are about 5 threads on this song now! NO-ONE WILL ESCAPE.

pete b. (pete b.), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:12 (twenty-one years ago)

a dance song you dislike is a dave pearce version right. why not just say "chav music" and be done with it.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes Ronan that's exactly what he said. Well read.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:21 (twenty-one years ago)

dave pearce version makes more immediate sense.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:22 (twenty-one years ago)

it's bloody awful, i'd rather listen to that new Prodigy album...

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Well once you're on his side Dom.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Ronan -- chill the fuck out.

Enrique (Enrique), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I am chilled, I just thought it was a stupid description.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Why is it a stupid description?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:25 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a bit inaccurate apart from anything else. surely it's not banging enough for dave pearce. it's more of a fatboy slim version if you want to use dj-as-shorthand.

pete b. (pete b.), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay Ronan, obviously you are chilled because you translated my actually qt neutral/joshing 'Dave Pearsh' adjective into undying contempt for the working classes.

It's nothing like Fatboy Slim!!!!

Enrique (Enrique), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it sounds like Lou Reed grudgingly agreeing to a Queer Eye makeover.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:28 (twenty-one years ago)

it's inaccurate not to mention just generalised and similar to every other lame off the cuff remark about dance music ever.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:30 (twenty-one years ago)

enrique it's exactly the type of record fatboy would play, what has it got to do with dave pearce apart from being on the radio?

pete b. (pete b.), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:31 (twenty-one years ago)

even pete tong version would have made more sense.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:32 (twenty-one years ago)

but I guess there'd be no negative connotation there

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Dave Pearce = dud
This version = dud

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Ronan, you are paranoid. I like dance music. Have done for more than a decade. However, I don't feel the need to defend its honour like some day-glo clad gallant atop his high horse of purity. Jesus. I was actually on your side about a lot of things but you have obviously turned into Jess (who, again, I respect as a writer).

Enrique (Enrique), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Pete Tong = no negative connotation?

Enrique (Enrique), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Look Enrique I've no problem with you personally but it was a fairly silly comment. the negative connotations of "this pete tong version" are certainly not the same as those of "this dave pearce version".

I don't "feel the need" to defend any honour specifically, just in this instance I think it's a silly comment. If that's a "Dave Pearce version" then any dance track is potentially a "Dave Pearce track". It's the assumption of similarity which bugs me.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:36 (twenty-one years ago)

The only songs Dave Pearce has played on both of his last two shows are "Satellite of Love" and "Lola's Theme".

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

so when he plays tracks they become his production? of course!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:38 (twenty-one years ago)

So describe a song as a "Westwood banger" or "typical Lamacq fare" or, heck, "drive-time rock" are all misnomers as well?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

no to describe a song as "this lamacq version" or "this westwood version" would be, when it is not produced by either.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I probably said 'Dave Pearsh' because I posted just after his show ended, and obviously it's the end of an era. There wasn't much to it. Given that I don't know the actual producer (radio DJs call it 'Lou Reed') and I don't think s/he's particularly well-known, Dave Pearce is a more evocative description. And no-one says 'Pete Tong' in the same way. 'DP' just means 'pop-dance' I suppose.

Enrique (Enrique), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:44 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah who is responsible for the remix incidentally?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:46 (twenty-one years ago)

(don't say P Diddy)

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Bewlay Brothers.

Enrique (Enrique), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:47 (twenty-one years ago)

most dance producers aren't well known.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:48 (twenty-one years ago)

mst musicians of any sort aren't well known.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Right, except the well-known ones. I mean if the remix was Chemical Bros or Dilinja or whatever, I'd know and wd have said.

E-rique (Enrique), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Dillinja should remix Dylan

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Chemical Bros should remix Bros.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i have a strabge glitch house remix of a bob dylan song but it's a white label and i have no idea who it is by. it's pretty good though. it has a cut-up of prince's Pop Life on the other side.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i want vitalic to remix the whole of blonde on blonde...now that would be a strange, mercury sound!
