Songs That it Took a While For You to Figure Out That they Samples Another Song

A few weeks ago I was listening to Venetian Snares' Chocolate Wheelchair Album and I realized that the first track samples "Oh Bondage Up Yours" by X-Ray Spex! I thought that was pretty cool.
Also the same thing happened with Atari Teenage Riot's "Fuck All!" where I realized it samples "Pay to Cum" by Bad Brains.

What are some of your own examples of this happening?

UNKLE's guns blazing opening up with the drum break from zappa's apostrophe

The main bassline to "The Number Song" by DJ Shadow is the intro from "Orion" by Metallica.

And the harmonica in the background of "Dub Be Good to Me" by Beats International is from the score to "Once Upon a Time in the West"

"What To Do But Cry?", from Third Eye Foundation's "Ghost", samples Lou Reed's "Metal Machine Music" (I think it's the near the beginning of Part I, but who really knows).

Having never heard MMM, I had no idea it was sampled until it I heard it on the American Masters Lou Reed bio in 1998.

You realize that the bassline is from the Clash's "Guns of Brixton", right?

"All I know" by the Jaxx samples a bit from the vocal ad-lib at the end of "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic"

Another Atari Teenage Riot song, "Speed", samples that Powermad song from Wild At Heart. I just realized that last time I watched WAH.

It took me a while to figure it out, but once I identified it, it seemed hugely obvious. "Oops On My" by Tweet samples the signature guitar hook from Devo's "GirluWant" (though it's wildly manipulated).

A lot of shit on "Paul's Boutique" I'm gradually discovering the original version of at random over the years, the sampling is so dense.

There's a track on TV SKy by the Young Gods that chops up the riff from "Welcome to the Jungle".

"6 Underground" by the Sneaker Pimps samples the score from Goldfinger - the bit where Bond walks into the room and the gold-covered girl's dead on the bed.

On the subject of John Barry - Acen's "Trip II the Moon Part I" samples a bit of the score from You Only Live Twice.

I didn't realize that Pussy Galore were sampling 2 Live Crew on Understand Me for a very long time, which reflects my sheltered life.

Closer Musik's "Maria" sampling the main theme from a Cloud One song (think it's "Disco Juice") was a major revelation. I can hardly listen to "maria" anymore, knowing what a straight up rip it is...

"how i could just kill a man" by cypress hill samples the organ from the music machine's "come on in"
missy elliott "whatcha gon' do" = fela kuti "colonial mentality" (bassline)
new kingdom "big 10-1/2" = betty davis (is it "shoo-b-doop and cop him"?)

The bassline is played by Cook though, not sampled (maybe the harmonica is too, dunno)

Is that so? Remarkable! Don't know if I woulda recognized that myself even if I was at all familiar with that Music Machine song; but "How I..." was also the source of a completely DIFFERENT sample that I likewise didn't recognize for a long time. I already told this story on a similar thread some months ago, so once again: As of a coupla years ago, I'd listened to "How I Could Just Kill A Man" about (I'm guessing) 200 times and Hendrix' "Are You Experienced?" 1000 times (another guess), but it wasn't until the 1001st listening that (assisted by cannabis and headphones) I realized that Cypress Hill took their little psych-guitar hook from Hendrix's backwards solo, two seconds worth and they slowed it down a bit.

Also, this isn't exactly the same but it's timely. Reading the "Eno: C or D" thread a few days ago inspired me to play Tiger Mountain for the first time in years. And imagine my surprise to suddenly realize that the tune being whistled in "Back In Judy's Jungle" was in fact that well known "Bridge Over The River Kwai" theme. How could I have missed that? Even the lyrics describe a scenario similar to that of the film!

Oh, and "Bring The Noise" samples "Get Off Your Ass And Jam" (Funkadelic) all throughout, but it only took me a few listenings to recognize that.

Len's 'Steal My Sunshine' steals the popping sound and piano line from 'More, More, More' by Andrea True Connection.

derrick (derrick), Friday, 23 July 2004 06:46 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, that submarine snare pop is just an awesome sound. i should start a thread for songs with that.

(the cypress hill/music machine sample is only for about 8 seconds, starting at 2:42. but it still freaked me out when i heard the music machine song.)

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Friday, 23 July 2004 06:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Ditto on the Len, I was going to list that but couldn't remember who did the original. That piano line would sound so familiar to me and for months I couldn't place it.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

One day I was pretty freaked to realize I had been listening to Dungeon Family's "Follow The Lights" pretty habitually and not realized it was built on the ever ubiquitous flanged drum beat sample of Kraftwerk's "Trans Europe Express".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 23 July 2004 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

This isn't really a sample but the opening line of "Alone Down There" by Modest Mouse--"how do, how do you do, my name is you" is a direct quote from the 1969 Woodstock documentary. Some reporter asks a stoned hippie her name, she replies "you", and the reporter stutters out the aforementioned line.

Hearing Wattstax for the first ever time, after years listening and listening and listening to Nation Of Millions, was a revelation.
