Anyone heard it? I just got a promo copy which I am supposed to review. I am going to give it a listen this week-end, but I have a very bad feeling about this. Should I?

is this thread from 1994? zingalamaduni?

peter smith (plsmith), Friday, 23 July 2004 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Did they bring back the old man? Is he dead?

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 23 July 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

damn it looks whack!
it's called 'among the trees'!
two of the tracks are called:
'Baba O je´ Is The Oldest One (Part I)' and
'Baba O je´ Is The Oldest One (Part II).

Another song is called
'Calling All Ghetto Children'!

Is this for real?

Jay Kid (Jay K), Friday, 23 July 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

baba o je was the old dude right?

arrested development are immune from all criticism, but i wish they had just been cryogenically frozen in 1994, after zingalamaduni.

Did Weiland give Baba Oje his chair back after MTV Unplugged?

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 23 July 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

come again?

Jay Kid (Jay K), Friday, 23 July 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

The Arrested Development fogey had this big rocking chair when they were on Unplugged, one of the next Unpluggeds was STP and Weiland was sitting in the same one!

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 23 July 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember that. Sometimes I worry that you are stealing my teenage memories, Miccio.

zingalamaduni was a great record.

I like to heal, I like to steal.

I once lived in Tennessee, but it didn't make me forget all that hurts me and help me understand your plan

jedidiah (jedidiah), Friday, 23 July 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

How did they do in that lawsuit against Fox TV?

two years pass...
I caught this in a bargain bin a few days ago, and it isn't half-bad. The album cover is kinda awful, and their attitude and sound hasn't really changed from the early nineties (though there's perhaps a bigger hippie flavour), but actually I find that sweet. I mean, being a total anomality (even compared to other "positive" rap groups) was always their thing. And they're still good at making catchy pop rap tunes, though the record could be a bit shorter.

Can someone who's seen them live explain what's the role of the old fogey in the group? Because it's sorta funny that they have three-part song praising him and saying he's the "oldest guy in rap", yet the fogey himself doesn't say a word on it, let alone the rest of the record.

the role of the old guy was to make them seem inclusive and socially considerate, he was kinda the least worthwhile bez ever. some UK paper at the time of the frst albm noted Speech blathering abt how Baba Oje was the spiritual leader of the group and gave them all their direction, but when the reporter went to ask him questions he told them they'd have to direct all their questions to "the boss".

From the band's website:

Baba Oje' - (Baba = Father) (Oje' = O.J.) born in Mississippi, is the elder of Arrested Development. At 74 yrs. he is also the oldest man in Hip Hop. An avid vegan, Africanist and yes even, roller skater. He is the most unique man you will ever meet. He dances, and does vocals when AD performs live. His spirit and presence inspires people all over the globe.
