I finally heard Ecstasy the other night and lamented on how far the mighty have fallen (still haven't heard The Raven).

Set the Twilight Reeling, however, is quite a nice slab of laser-etched aluminum.

I liked Magic & Loss when it came out.

I still like a good 1/3 to a half of Magic & Loss. Haven't given the other albums a solid listen.

I was really fond of 'Twilight' when it came out. It's got a lower Manhattan vibe to it though, namechecking Junior's on Canal St and Bway (long gone) and the interior photo of Mercer and Canal. And the 'Senator, you polish a turd' line is the best.

"Doin' the moden dance!" Oh Lou.

I think Ecstacy is the best of his post-New York albums. In fact, I prefer it to New York, which I've always felt was a bit overrated. It does, however, suffer from a severe case of bloat. It's about 20-30 minutes too long.

The Raven is awful. And not in a fun way.

Magic & Loss is a damn good album. The "opera" structure hurts it a bit, what with the song subtitles and reprises and whatnot, but strip that away and there's at least five or six fantastic songs. "Sword of Damocles" is one of my favorites. Then there's "The Power and the Glory" with some great Jimmy Scott vocals, "What's Good" (yeah, it's a bit of a Sweet Jane ripoff, but the man's entitled), "Warrior King"...

It's about 20-30 minutes too long.

Most of that time is devoted to a song about a fucking opossum.

"song subtitles"?????

"My Generation: On the Increased Gap Between Baby Boomers and Their Parents, and the Death Wish Resulting Therefrom"

Ecstasy may be too long (thanks to Possum), but "Baton Rouge" is one of the most honest and brutal songs I've ever heard about divorce.

shookout (shookout), Friday, 23 July 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Ecstasy's not without its good points. But there are plenty of bad ones.

In the sub-genre of Rock and Roll Songs About Opossums, "Like a Possum" has got to be right up there.

Generally speaking, I don't think Lou made the transition to the CD format very well. From New York on, they are all way too long. They would all be better if trimmed down to 40-45 minutes. He could have 4 or 5 disks worth of crappy outtakes albums by now. (He sort of does anyway, but he could release them as such and laugh along with us. Or at least shrug them off.)

he really is the godfather of rap

His singing has become atrocious since New York. It was better when he spoke-sung. Now, unfortunately, he warbles.

His singing was atrocious long before New York (just listen to Growing Up in Public for instance), but he has his moments. I think I prefer his warbling to his "rapping."

Salmon Pink (Salmon Pink), Friday, 23 July 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I like his voice on The Bells.

shookout (shookout), Saturday, 24 July 2004 03:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Songs for Drella. If collaborations don't count, then Perfect Night. If live albums don't count, then probably Magic and Loss.

Ecstasy is kind of eh, but I like "Big Sky" a whole lot.
