What's the consensus on this one?

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 23 July 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I love it. But then I love it all. (Up to and including Born Again anyway.)

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 23 July 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the album cover is even worse than 'Technical Ecstasy.'

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 23 July 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the cover fine. It's memorable at least.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 23 July 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

the lyrics get a bit silly at times, but I love the music and the recording. Well, except for the Bill Ward song.

Avi (Avi), Friday, 23 July 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the album cover is even worse than 'Technical Ecstasy.'

I love that cover! it was like their weird let's try to be punk cover! i remember beck had it in this thing he did for vanity fair on his favortie album covers (not that invoking beck will do much to forward by pro-nsd album cover views on ILM but still i thought it was cool he picked it)....

I thought it was very mysterious and dangerous looking as a child, which is prob. my real standard for album covers...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 23 July 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

it always seemed to me that this album got unfairly slammed. but i agree with ya'll that's it's pretty slamm-in! highlights for me:

Johnny Blade: wicked synths ride Ward's hyper beat to perfection. Ozzy sounds kinda sneery n' eery

Junior's Eyes: funky, funky drums and bass groove. surprised it was never sampled.

Shock Waves: non-stop riffage! there's very little, if any, that get's repeated. it just goes from riff to riff in that seamless Sabbath flow.

A Hard Road: tuneful melodic uplifting bounce. Junior's Eyes has a little bit of it too.

pheNAM (pheNAM), Friday, 23 July 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The album or the track?

Best track on the album is easily "Junior's Eyes".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 23 July 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I like 'Hard Road,' but I don't think I would have the same reaction had I not seen them do it live in '78 on that DVD that came out. Ozzy really sings his heart out.

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 23 July 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I just noticed the aviators in the clouds on the back cover tonight.

I love how the synthesizer itself sounds like a drunk stumbling bum at the start of "A Hard Road." "WAH, WAH, WAAAAAAAHHHH..."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 January 2005 05:55 (twenty-one years ago)

the title song is one of the great bubblegum moments of first-generation heavy metal. but where on earth did it come from? did someone in the band reach up on the medicine shelf for the daily dose of downers and grab a bottle of uppers by mistake?

fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 10 January 2005 06:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I think there's an LTPJ piece where J0hn made no less than a full diagram explaining why he thinks Never Say Die! is Sabbath's best. I don't think it's on his site now, but probably in LPTJ #1 through #3 somewhere.

As for "Never Say Die" the song.. yeah, it weirdly coincides with Van Halen's debut album, which came out the same year, moreso than any previous Sabbath, though a little murkier than Van Halen.

donut christ (donut), Monday, 10 January 2005 06:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, if anything, "Never Say Die" the song sounds more like Cheap Trick than Van Halen.. so, yeah, the bubblegum comment is probably otm.

donut christ (donut), Monday, 10 January 2005 06:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I also like how that's Daft Punk on the cover of the album.

(x-post)
yeah there's definitely some cheap trick in "never say die." some husker du, too -- to me it sounds like a lost grant hart song from the go-for-broke mersh album that husker du should have made after warehouse.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Monday, 10 January 2005 06:11 (twenty-one years ago)

The cover, title track and the first bit of 'Air Dance' are fucking great.

Still out on the rest.

Sasha (sgh), Monday, 10 January 2005 06:16 (twenty-one years ago)

four years pass...

I'll revive and say that I just listened to this the other day. I consider it an underrated and overlooked masterpiece.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 24 September 2009 13:07 (sixteen years ago)

Here's that bit I did on it - usu. don't link to my own stuff but I've always been proud of this, it's not a big deal but it's kinda funny maybe

a full circle lol (J0hn D.), Thursday, 24 September 2009 13:17 (sixteen years ago)

That's fantastic-thanks for the link. I agree with the flowchart, the jazz stuff on the second side is great. "Air Dance" ends with some sort of weird, awesome synth-guitar jazz solo. And I have no idea who did the song order on the back, because it's not even close to accurate.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 24 September 2009 13:23 (sixteen years ago)

that's great, J0hn. i love this album, too, when i finally got it (after years of orthodox sabbaticians warning me away from it and technical ecstacy) i couldn't believe how crazy great it was. think i'm going to listen to it next.

GOVERNMENT TRASH QUEEN ON A THRONE (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 24 September 2009 13:42 (sixteen years ago)

"after years of orthodox sabbaticians warning me away from it"

Be very wary of those guys.

That flowchart nails the fact that one of the great things about this is how utterly bizarre it is. If you played "Breakout" for somebody not familiar with it, there is no way they would guess it's Black Sabbath.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 24 September 2009 14:04 (sixteen years ago)

just out of curiosity, who does the spoken-word "never, say, dieeee..." bit at the end of the title track?

henry s, Thursday, 24 September 2009 15:36 (sixteen years ago)

I dont have a clue on that.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 24 September 2009 16:03 (sixteen years ago)

According to Wikipedia, there are different "faint images" in the sky on US vs UK pressings. Silly Hipgnosis.

Nate Carson, Thursday, 24 September 2009 23:52 (sixteen years ago)

From Black-Sabbath.com FAQ "Sabbath were given a choice of the existing Never Say Die cover of the pilots and another choice of surgeons looking at the camera (as if the camera were a patient) The members took the plane cover, and the other cover wound up being used years later by Rainbow, on the Difficult to Cure album"

Nate Carson, Friday, 25 September 2009 00:02 (sixteen years ago)

man, never listened to this album before (even though I have that big black box set) because of the bad rep it has. threw it on last night after seeing this thread and it RULES.

and ozzchart otm. side two is bonkers.

original bgm, Friday, 25 September 2009 13:33 (sixteen years ago)

xpost that's a great album cover factoid...I always thought that was Ritchie Blackmore himself behind the surgeon's mask in that photo...

henry s, Friday, 25 September 2009 13:45 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, that is pretty great.

I think sabbath made the right choice. pilot cover is way cooler. only thing I don't like is the "never say die font" but the "black sabbath" one with triforce for a's is totally cool.

original bgm, Friday, 25 September 2009 14:02 (sixteen years ago)

I know it's been said before, but black sabbath gotta have some of the most consistently wtf covers for a major label band!

but it works.

original bgm, Friday, 25 September 2009 14:04 (sixteen years ago)

master reality is like the pinnacle of this. so, half-assed. so perfect.

original bgm, Friday, 25 September 2009 14:05 (sixteen years ago)

also, I like that they kept the wrong tracklisting on the box set cd sleeve for never say die.

original bgm, Friday, 25 September 2009 14:15 (sixteen years ago)

like i said upthread, i could see if they mixed up a couple of the songs on the tracklisting, but it is so totally inaccurate its ridiculous. definitely cool they kept it for the box set

Bill Magill, Friday, 25 September 2009 15:07 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, I was seriously confused on my first listen.

"why does ozzy keep saying 'johnny blade' in a song that isn't 'johnny blade'?"

I don't think it's the only Sabbath album with mixed up song titles. Isn't Mob Rules all wonky too?

Awesome.

three years pass...

I've been listening to Never Say Die quite a bit of late. Upon listening, "Junior's Eyes" has to be the model of pretty much all of Ozzy Osbourne's solo career. That song is the template with the mid-tempo groove, big solo, drony synths etc. Ozzy's got a ton of tunes like this in his catalog.

earlnash, Thursday, 23 January 2014 22:50 (twelve years ago)

Great album. And i think Ward's take at the mike "Swinging the Chain" is great, thats some serious riffage after "Air Dance", "Breakout" etc (which are great in their own way).

Prince Kajuku (Bill Magill), Friday, 24 January 2014 15:37 (twelve years ago)

^^^ I do love Ward's singing on it, kinda reminds me of Algy Ward's dad or something

Also, for the record, JOHHHH-NY BLAAAAADE!!!!

SOMEONE'S got to program the propaganda simulacra (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Sunday, 4 September 2016 08:05 (nine years ago)

eight years pass...

Not sure whether it's that Ozzy is singing differently on this record, or just the way his parts were mixed, but WOW the vox!!

Also, John Darnielle's Ozzchart is fantastic. Glad the link still works.
