hey there New York -

:: the HOMOSEXUALS [in exile] (Bruno Wizard backed by the Fuses)
:::: w/ DAN MELCHIOR'S BROKE REVIEW
:::::: TALLBOYS

:: CRAZY RHYTMS DJs (Dan Selzer & Mike Simonetti)
:: & DJs PICKPOCKET & BURGERTIME (Kat & Keren)

@ TOMMY'S TAVERN

G train to Greenpoint Ave | doors 8pm | -> $7 | 718.383.9699

the HOMOSEXUALS were an enigma of a band when they began in London in the late 70s & they have gone on to spawn an obsessive afterlife legend among feverish record collectors through to today. An indescribable amalgam of hundreds of influences - from psyche-folk and power-pop to punk and dub - the HOMOSEXUALS were probably the most eccentrically avant-garde band in the UK scene in the late 70s, while also writing the most perfect pop songs. "As potent and visionary as Wire or Pere Ubu," - Village Voice

the HOMOSEXUALS' continued obscurity is a story of a recorded output of just a smatterring of cassettes & impossible to find records - though filled with genius pop experiments - obscured & deconstructed & otherwise challenged in every possible way. Hauntingly catchy & amazing pure pop snippets of vocals or guitar would be left as deliberately unfinished fragments, perfect finished pop songs would be stripped of all recognisable features and buried in layers of dub and cocophany, and to guarantee all obscurity, they'd release finished vinyl records sleeveless and nameless or under pseudonyms.

it's unlikely the HOMOSEXUALS wil be performing again anytime soon, so don't miss this chance to see an genuine legend play in an intimate setting in Brooklyn - only their 2nd show in the USA ever.

also don't miss - 2nite 7/23 -> LA LAQUE, MOB STEREO, THE ART OF SHOOTING, & FULL MOON PARTISAN @ TOMMY'S TAVERN

& Monday 7/26 -> FEDERATION X, TUNNEL OF LOVE, & CHEEPS @ TOMMY'S TAVERN

[ the HOMOSEXUALS in exile ]
"Bruno Wizard was a psychedelic child of the sixties who got caught up in the excitement of the 1977 UK Punk scene. Despite being amongst the first, naming his band The Homosexuals was only one of a dozen
reasons he never made it. Another reason was the sheer brilliance and uniqueness of their music. While they may have been the most avant-garde band on the scene, they also wrote the most perfect pop songs. But while mining everything from psyche-folk and power-pop to punk and dub, the Homosexuals managed to record a world of brilliant sounds all uniquely their own, each deconstructed gem having more ideas then most bands have in a lifetime. Since then Bruno has been involved in other worlds of music we're only now catching up with, and with the excitement over the release of the long needed Astral Glamor 3cd box set, he's been convinced to revisit his past for a moment, and in typical Homosexuals fashion, play some favorites with a band he's never met." - Dan Selzer, Acute Records / NY Happenings

[ DAN MELCHIOR'S BROKE REVIEW ]
"Dan Melchior's a brazen, talented songwriter from the wilds of London. He used to play with the likes of Billy Childish and Holly Golightly, but escaped to NYC to focus on his band, the Broke Revue." - Version City records. "Dan Melchior’s Broke Revue is one of NYC’s finest transplant bands to arrive on the scene. Their new EP is a foot stomping collection of four covers. Subway Sect “Chain Smoking”, Dob Dylan “From A Buick 6”, The Toggs “I Just Sing”, and The Small Faces “Whatcha Gonna Do About It”. The songs on the EP were chosen to represent the band’s roots. It is a terrific vinyl piece to play at any party." - Lio Cerezo, Crashin' In

[ TALLBOYS ]
"Tallboys, a helter skelter/herky jerky quartet from the back alleys of New York, create their own off-kilter and distinctive art-damaged punk sound in the spirit of old-school Rough Trade bands like The FAll and Kleenex/Liliput . Live, lead singer Shelia Sixteen hypnotizes audiences by her without-fear-or-favor stage presence, her spastic-snarling vocals, and drunken fly-by-night banter while the band plows through their set full of thunderous, sweaty energy." - Indieworkshop.com

Wednesday August 25th @ FREDDY’S

:: Josh Reynolds’ SPELLING BEE ::

you see Spellbound? yeah, so did Josh. Actually here’s the story, this last May we were all watching the Kentucky Derby and drinking straight bourbon with mint and sugar in it and then, after yelling at the horsees on the teevee got finished, the sports channel suddenly started showing these crazy kids spelling “ichthyology” and what have you, in front of a crowd. So we substituted workaholic junior high school nerds for horses and re-commenced with the bets and the screaming. Alas, an interest in spelling bees was born.

Come on out and compete, it’ll be be totally awesome! Josh’s gonna be the spellmaster, costs one dollar to enter, and the winner takes the pot (less expenses and the winner has to buy Josh a beer).

duelling brooklyn show threadS!!!!

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 23 July 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Dan Melchior live in L.A. a couple of years back. A fantastic show, and he's a true gentleman.

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 23 July 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

just heard from Robin Edgerton saying that the Homosexuals with Bruno were pretty good last night!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 24 July 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm just scared of the crowd that will be at tommy's tonight

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 24 July 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

it should be...interesting.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 24 July 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

brbrrrrbrb goddamn east coasters

jake b. (cerybut), Saturday, 24 July 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

AMAZING!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 25 July 2004 06:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't think last night was so hot. although last night was so hot. that guy in drag was notable though.

johnny and luther (johnny and luther), Sunday, 25 July 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

didn't notice the guy in drag. I thought Bruno and the Fuses were fantastic. They had great energy, were pretty true to the songs, and where they weren't, they made it interesting. I was worried seeing as how many of the Homosexuals songs aren't produced like a straight punk band, but the melodies were there and the energy was there. Bruno said a lot of totally insane and funny stuff and had a great time. Sorry you didn't enjoy it.

There was something wrong with the AC, usually that back room is pretty comfortable.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 25 July 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

man it was HOT HOT HOT HOT.

when i started dripping with sweat i couldn't take it anymore and had to leave...

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 25 July 2004 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I just fanned myself with a record.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 26 July 2004 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i was outside fanning out on RIck Moranis.

johnny and luther (johnny and luther), Monday, 26 July 2004 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

...he's a true gentleman.

no, he's not.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 26 July 2004 04:07 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah the AC was out for about 2 hours. we got it on just before Homosexuals went on, but by then the number of folks crammed back there made it pretty much useless. would have been bearable if it'd been on those two hours and had brought the room temperature down preemptively. definately did in the possibility of a dance party (well, that and BJ).

anyhow, they were great anyhow. I was expecting half-assed on all levels and I was way beyond pleasantly suprised. georgeous. tallboys were in good form and I like the snazzy paired down broke review 3 piece.

I think I was sweatier than anybody. Todd

Todd P, Monday, 26 July 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I just fanned myself with a record.

you also had some space to breathe by the turntables, whereas i had 98.6 degrees surrounding me at every angle. :(

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 26 July 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

plus, i suffer from hyperhidrosis

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 26 July 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

what's up with the broke review 3 piece?

danh (danh), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

you could've done what Steve Martin suggests. When walking down the street if you see someone who looks like they may want to mug you(or in this case, stand next to you), all you have to do is throw up on yourself. Then nobody will stand near you! Try it at the next show.

I have to admit I don't mind the Broken Review, they sound pretty good, the stripped down sound suits him, although I'm not his biggest fan and the songs and the sets go on way to long.

Tallboys were on fire.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i know their last drummer quit but how are they now a three piece?

danh (danh), Monday, 26 July 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I only speak from person experience, Stencil. He saved my life, after all.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 26 July 2004 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i've always found him to be very polite.

danh (danh), Monday, 26 July 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually he didn't save my life as much as he "shook my hand" and "told me to leave before Modey Lemon came on".

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 26 July 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Everyone but Bruno (from Kims, not the Homosexuals) left the Broke Review. No Brad Truax, no Barry London, no guy from Shrine who's married to the girl from the Roger's Sisters. Just Dan, Bruno on bass and a new guy on drums.

I've heard from multiple sources Dan can be "difficult". But that is hearsay and gossip.

I just came back from WFMU where Mike Goodstein let me and Mike from Troubleman bring Bruno (from the Homosexuals, not from Kims) back on the air(he previously chatted w/ John Allen, on a show that is already archived). It was pretty crazy. We tried to cover different subjects then John's show. We got Bruno to tell his story of selling drugs to Robert Plant during the Stairway to Heaven session. Then we put Stairway on and it started to skip, so Bruno adlibbed new lyrics to the loop. Much other craziness and stupidity took place.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 06:56 (twenty-one years ago)

he was sort of difficult that night at Rare, Dan.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh so they just sit around daddy's now or what? they were a pretty good rythm section. too bad.

danh (danh), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Brad is playing Samara Lubelski's band. Don't know about the others.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

in, that should read.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

barry wasn't a full-on member. he's doing his sound engineer/recording stuff, working on a reality show right now. don't know what greg's up to, aside from running daddy's. brad also plays in jah division, and as far as i know home aren't totally defunct. i don't think stories of how difficult d.m. is can be deemed gossip and hearsay if they come directly from those who have to work with him.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

which guy is greg that run's daddy's? i need a P/T JOB!

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

he is not there all the time but if I'm there at the same time you and him are there, I'll point him out.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

cutty, hurry up with that veggie dog.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i can finally get my noise-psych project "blaqued ice" going

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

dude make sure the marlin doesn't fall off the wall.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

also, you got change for a dollar?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

A friend forwarded this link to a radio show Bruno co-hosted at wfmu:
http://wfmu.org/playlists/shows/11949

He adds,
Just listened to all of it. These are the timings of
when Bruno appears:

25:45-35:00
49:50-1:11:45
1:26:55-1:48:48
2:02:48-2:33:05
2:43:45-2:52:40 (this part gets disilusioning...)

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Tae Won Yu! What in the world is that guy doing these days? I thought he'd been swept around in that whole NW Mocket / Need prelectropunkwhatever thing.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

he's living in NYC and occasionally playing. He was at my house briefly during the taco party.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

well, Bruno was back on the WFMU, this time on Michael Goodstein's show with me and Mike from Troubleman. Where John Allen asked real questions and actually discussed music, our show was a bit more inane, however there are many worthwhile highlights. Bruno discussing his involvement in the 80s/90s London club scene, hanging out with Led Zeppelin, singing a few made up songs etc. The show can be found at:

http://wfmu.org/playlists/shows/12014

we came late to the studio, so keeping w/ Dominique's post, the actual Homosexuals content basically starts at 48:00

Michael and Bruno talk at length, pretty seriously, then there's some records, then at 1:32:00 stupidity begins, then there's more songs including some of Bruno's selection, then some more discussion. If you want to fast forward past some of the dialogue directly to Bruno's Led Zep story, it's at 2:48:00.

enjoy.

or try to.
