sorry if this has been done already. the list is kinda boring really, looks like a recent top ten albums chart.

The Mercury is just The Brits for students.

this is one of the worst shortlists ever. i want jamelia to win, but even she has already had huge success.

i now want robert wyatt to win.

Is the Mercury meant to be about celebrating people who aren't successful? No. It's meant to be about choosing the best British album of the last 12 months. It fails to do this to many people's satisfaction too.

i cant remember its exact purpose. i thought it was meant to celebrate someone with a great british album who hadnt been quite recognised for it or been rewarded sales-wise.

thesplooge (thesplooge), Saturday, 24 July 2004 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Nope. It's just meant to be for the best album of the year. Meant to be.

It's a device by which the industry can generate some interest in its product, just like every other awards ceremony. Which is fine, even if this year's shortlist is the least interesting in the Mercury's history.

Apart from Frith, who else is on the judging panel?

Venga, Saturday, 24 July 2004 11:27 (twenty-one years ago)

some woman from the panel was on CD:UK today, spouting nothing too interesting.

The only good thing about the Mercury is that I had a tenner on Roni Size the year he won it.

It'll obviously be a travesty of justice, but I've got a weird feeling they're going to give it to Franz Ferdinand this year.

Tom, is it in any way possible to avoid failing to please a lot of people?

Venga, Saturday, 24 July 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

what makes my blood boil, is media critics such as David Sinclair in The Times suggest that this year the shortlist is one of the best, and then go onto list Secret Machines [a US band] in his dreamlist. Stoopid fool.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 24 July 2004 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Why not even a nomination for Wiley seeing as they gave it to Dizzee last year?

JoB (JoB), Saturday, 24 July 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Where the fuck are Girls Aloud? Or did they come outside the release date criteria?

Nick H (Nick H), Saturday, 24 July 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I was pleased to see no less a figure than Marcello ask "Why no Emma Bunton?".

edward o (edwardo), Saturday, 24 July 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

(I mean, obviously the reason why is obvious but her album is miles better than Jamelia's which has four good songs on it)

edward o (edwardo), Saturday, 24 July 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Noodle, I also have a feeling it'll go to Franz Ferdinand, although I hope it's the Ty, though it won't be (The Steets album is brilliant, but doesn't need any kind of boost).

Wooden, Saturday, 24 July 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm really surprised by Ty as the token hip-hop inclusion rather than Klashnekoff as well.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 24 July 2004 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't realise till today that Kish Kash was on the list. I still think that needs a boost.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 25 July 2004 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but I don't think it deserves to win. It's good, but not nearly as good as Remedy or Rooty.

Still, much rather that than Yawn Patrol or Bellend and Sebastian.

Wooden, Sunday, 25 July 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I think a lot of people didn't buy Kish Kash just because they were an immediately successful dance act so they just assumed it wasn't going to be better than their first two.
