djdee2005, Saturday, 24 July 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

She also mentioned that she thought I might like them.

djdee2005, Saturday, 24 July 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

if you replaced the cure with gg allin, shed have never suggested it.

peter smith (plsmith), Saturday, 24 July 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

but yknow - classic, cause at least youre starting from her being interested in music...

peter smith (plsmith), Saturday, 24 July 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I find it disconcerting that the touchpoint for most of the people my age to the music I've been interested in lately is a crappy emo-tronica group.

djdee2005, Saturday, 24 July 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a documented non-fan of the Postal Service, but there are many, many worse names she could have brought up.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 24 July 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I suppose "random-ass" would be a better adjective than "crappy."

djdee2005, Saturday, 24 July 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Like Peter said, classic because it means she's, you know, interested in music and making an effort. And wants to suggest stuff you might like. Even if it's a band you disdain.

cis (cis), Saturday, 24 July 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

play her the young marble giants - theyre better than the postal service.

peter smith (plsmith), Saturday, 24 July 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

debatable

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 July 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

My friends are bringing up the Postal Service more and more often these days. I wish I had a shotgun.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 24 July 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

We're in the nu-wave era, man. Expect more. I'll probably like the mainstream Postal Service rip-off duo more than the PS themselves.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 July 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost - YOURE debatable.

peter smith (plsmith), Saturday, 24 July 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm real, dawg.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 July 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Hm, I wonder when the mainstream PS rip-off duo well pop up. I'd be interested in hearing them.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 24 July 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

It's only a matter of time.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 July 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

First, the personnel must be chosen. I say Moby (mainstream Dntel) with Rob Thomas (mainstream Ben Gibbard) singing.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 24 July 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

CLASSIC

it means she likes you!!

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 24 July 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

dude, you're the one who put just like heaven on a mix. is this high school?

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 24 July 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG I would buy the Moby/Rob Thomas collabo immediately.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 July 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

We should forward this idea on to their managers.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 24 July 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, I have to admit, I like the Postal Service album a lot. But, as we have established your dislike for these guys, what bands of the same ilk should I explore.

Gilles Meloche (Gilles Meloche), Saturday, 24 July 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Erlend Oye's collaborative electro album from last year is nice, as is the Soviet album We Are Eyes, We Are Builders.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 24 July 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

It's your own fault for being so fucking emo, Deej.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Saturday, 24 July 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked the Postal Service album too, though Ben Gibbard's voice is a bit too something or other. If you liked that record, I'd suggest trying Lali Puna, the Notwist, Dntel, maybe even Ellen Allien if you're feeling adventurous.

o. nate (onate), Saturday, 24 July 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Now I have to hate the Notwist.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 24 July 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

even if it was a hot lil scrappy/notwist blend?

jess, Saturday, 24 July 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

check Coloma's "Finery."

Beta (abeta), Saturday, 24 July 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i really dunno what's so weird or shocking about her bringing them up for a tape comprised of the poppier end of microhouse, astralwerks electronic music, and random indie touchstones.

jess, Saturday, 24 July 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

after all, this is a world where pitchfork reviews ying yang and gives basement jaxx a positive score...the whole planets gone screwy lately.

jess, Saturday, 24 July 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

if you like postal service you should get his records as Figurine, much better and the bonus is no Ben Gibbard.

keith m (keithmcl), Saturday, 24 July 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

dude, you're the one who put just like heaven on a mix. is this high school?

I'm 21. The biggest hits from my high school years:

anything from cash money, esp. "Back that Azz Up"
"Shake Ya Ass"
"Whats Your Fantasy"
etc.

Anyway Jess is right obv I don't think it's weird or shocking. It's just, (as I said before) disconcerting that a lot of the music I've been exploring lately reminds many ppl my age and current collegiate locale of some random-ass emotronica group.

djdee2005, Saturday, 24 July 2004 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Obviously "the music I'm exploring lately" minus anything that I think this particular middle class suburban white girl wouldn't enjoy - crunk, etc.

djdee2005, Saturday, 24 July 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

just like heaven was good on a mix during my bar mitzvah era

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 24 July 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"just like heaven" is ALWAYS good on a mix for a girl. sometimes i switch it up with the dino jr. version.

jess, Saturday, 24 July 2004 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Depends on how long you've know the girl. In some situations, "Lovesong" might be more appropriate.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 24 July 2004 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I stick with the Dino version cuz they usually already have the Cure's.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 July 2004 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i get a little paranoid about making tapes for potential romantic interests that "say too much"

jess, Saturday, 24 July 2004 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The trick is to dilute the vibe a bit and put some random shit in between the songs that secretly represent your deepest feelings.

If I was God, I would wave my hand right now and "Just Like Heaven" would be replaced by ODB's "I Want Pussy" on every mixtape/CD-R ever.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 July 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah. I have the same fear. Since I don't routinely pay attention to lyrics, putting together a mix for a new girl is quite stressful in that I suddenly have to study lyrics to ensure I'm not saying the wrong things.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 24 July 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

just so you guys now, they really don't give a shit.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 July 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

That's good, then. The mix I'm making for a girl right now has "Pink Frost" on it.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 24 July 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

You mean they don't care if you're sending them mixed (or not so mixed) signals via the song selection? I disagree with that.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 24 July 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

eminem - "kim"
the police - "every breath you take"
ghostface - "wildflower"
2 live crew - the "heeeeey we want some pussy" one
the whole of napalm death's scum
b.g. - "dog azz"
ice-t - "let's get butt naked and fuck"
slick rick - "treat her like a prostitute"
jimmy buffett feat. uncle kracker - "hey good lookin"
the cure - "just like heaven"

jess, Saturday, 24 July 2004 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

4 u.

jess, Saturday, 24 July 2004 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

If I was God, I would wave my hand right now and "Just Like Heaven" would be replaced by ODB's "I Want Pussy" on every mixtape/CD-R ever.

hahahah nice 5/5

djdee2005, Saturday, 24 July 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

well ok goddamn don't be schizophrenic about it but feel free to put a song about waffles in between the pinings. The important thing is good music, good flow, rather than every track being a diary excerpt.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 25 July 2004 04:21 (twenty-one years ago)

And "Let's Pretend We're Married" > "Think (Let Tomorrow Bee)," chaps.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 25 July 2004 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread needs to be up top with the other Postal Service threads.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 25 July 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

She emailed me today and said her favorite tracks were

1. Maximum Joy - Silent Street
3. Souls of Mischief - '93 Til Infinity
4. CocoRosie - By Your Side
6. Phoenix - If I Ever Feel Better
10. N'Tyce featuring Method Man - Hush Hush Tip
11. Kiley Dean - Keep it Moving
12. Lucien-N-Luciano - Madre, Mother & Mere
13. Arthur Russell - A Little Lost

Just Like Heaven, Amanda, and Another Girl Another Planet go underappreciated. She said she had heard Daft Punk too much. I think it's cool that she singled out the N'Tyce track.

djdee2005, Monday, 26 July 2004 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

vahid otm

also i have never heard the postal service

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 26 July 2004 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

also jess otm. mix tapes should be completely emotionally inexpressive.

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 26 July 2004 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I made a break-up mix and actually sent it to the girl...I wasn't in complete control of all my senses at the time and called her immediately after I got home from the post office to tell her to throw away the next package that came in the mail from me. She's since said she actually listened to it and we're still on speaking terms, so maybe I should have put some angrier songs on there.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 26 July 2004 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

TS: romantic mix tapes vs comedy mix tapes?

I reckon comedy has a better strike rate.

Jacob (Jacob), Monday, 26 July 2004 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha am i the first girl to post on this thread?!

geeta (geeta), Monday, 26 July 2004 04:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i know every track on your mixtape but i have never -- to my knowledge, at least -- heard the postal service.

(nor do i intend to, judging by what i've read)

geeta (geeta), Monday, 26 July 2004 04:15 (twenty-one years ago)

by reading this thread you're kinda hearing the Postal Service anyhoo

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 26 July 2004 06:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I made a break-up mix and actually sent it to the girl

my break-up mix was allegedy my ex's favorite tape I gave her ever. And over the years I'd given her, like, 20. I think this is part of the reason I'm attracted to girls who don't inspire me to make crush tapes these days (either because they've already got a busload of music they listen to or because they don't care about music). I still love making mixes but I think I'm dang near through with crush expressions via OPT (Other

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 26 July 2004 08:04 (twenty-one years ago)

People's Tunes).

(woops! while debating sending that post I accidentally did!)

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 26 July 2004 08:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Time for go to bed

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 26 July 2004 08:05 (twenty-one years ago)

"i know every track on your mixtape but i have never -- to my knowledge, at least -- heard the postal service.

(nor do i intend to, judging by what i've read)"

Another decent record crushed by the ILM cognoscenti. Postal Service is emo but then so is Matthew Dear and to a certain extent so is Luciano. Besides putting the Cure and Phoenix on a mixtape kind of limits your abilities to decry others for being too emo.

hector (hector), Monday, 26 July 2004 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG N'TYCE OMG

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Monday, 26 July 2004 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw, it's sort of cute, though, isn't it? She's so naive. I mean, THE POSTAL SERVICE?! Everybody knows they stink! (what do GIRLS know about music, anyway!) Don't worry, just get her a subscription to WIRE asap, and she'll be citing all sorts of Soul Jazz reissues within no time! Still, DUD! Dump her!

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Monday, 26 July 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I too am now Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog. That is some delicious sarcasm.

hector (hector), Monday, 26 July 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I probably could have held back on the unfunny wise-ass response, but I just thought this thread was based on a deeply lame premise.

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Monday, 26 July 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

What is the lame premise?

I never even said that I disliked them! (aside from when I called them "crappy" which I amended to "random-ass").

I never said that I disliked postal service for "being too emo" whatever the fuck that means. My point was just that it was sort of strange that I considered this a "diverse" mix when I was making it, and tried to pull from various different sources, and her interpretation of it was through the closest touchpoint of which she was aware: a random-ass emotronica group.

I wasn't insulting her taste, like "haha I know so much more about music, wtf is wrong with this girl she thinks postal service are good OMG!!!!"

I was actually feeling rather humbled about my taste, seeing what i saw as a big effort to show diversity being reduced to this one band (and like jess said, it wasn't surprising really...I just wasn't expecting it). Basically, my response was, "hah, i shoulda seen that coming."

djdee2005, Tuesday, 27 July 2004 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i like the name, "the postal service"

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

DJ listens to Hot Hot Heat everybody.

...and he's not going to stop until every person on the planet has heard "Amanda."

Rexico, Tuesday, 27 July 2004 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

There are worse faults than that.

hector (hector), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 03:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The lame premise, as I saw it, was: "I go all out and make a super-diverse and uber-ilxy mix CD, and this girl comes back at me with a recommendation for some crap band you hear on "The O.C." -- she doesn't get it at all."

I apologize if I got it all wrong, but to me it looked pretty clear (by the fact that DUD was an option): So the girl recommended The Postal Service (who, whether or not you like them, are far from "random" these days -- they are a rather large phenomenon in indie circles)... certainly there are worse offenses than a girl trying to relate to you by recommending a group she thinks you might like based on a CD you gave her?
That said, I should also say that I think your mix CD looks excellent. That Coco Rosie song haunts me, and the Arthur Russell reissues are great. But what do I know, I also like The Postal Service (and Hot Hot Heat).

Again, honestly, I am really sorry if I got it wrong -- I just had some kind of musically populist urge to defend the people for whom The Postal Service sounds pretty cool and different.

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Its ok don't worry about it, I wasn't exactly being clear, and I think some ppl were reading it the way you did.
