"I think the singer in Pearl Jam should go eat some Pearl Jam!" - Yngwie Malmsteen

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 24 July 2004 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark E Smith to thread.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 24 July 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Noel Gallagher called Kurt Cobain "a sad cunt" after he killed himself.

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 24 July 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

What's that wonderful old Liam Gallagher to Damon Albarn chestnut? "I wish he'd die of AIDS"?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Saturday, 24 July 2004 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually that Yngwie quote isn't as classic as I thought it was now that I realize what he meant by "pearl jam"

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 24 July 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

This doesn't fir in this thread really, but I always liked it.

"How can you tell when (insert crappy drummer's name here) is at the door?"

"How?"

"The knock slows down."

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Saturday, 24 July 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

fit not fir

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Saturday, 24 July 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

What's that wonderful old Liam Gallagher to Damon Albarn chestnut? "I wish he'd die of AIDS"?

It was along the lines of "the drummer and the guitarist I've got time for, but the bassist and the singer should get AIDS and die because I fucking hate those two".

Speaking of AIDS, there's the Nicky Wire/Michael Stipe comment from 1992.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 24 July 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

and there's when Liam was asked how he felt about them being compared to the Beatles and Blur to the Stones and his response was like "we're the Beatles and the Stones. Blur are the Monkees."

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Saturday, 24 July 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

!

Somehow I've never heard that one.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Saturday, 24 July 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

While touring the US in support of his Armed Forces album, Costello made the headlines after having an argument with Stephen Stills and Bonnie Bramlett where he stated that Ray Charles was "a blind, ignorant, nigger". Costello later recanted his racist remark and kept a low profile for the remainder of the seventies.

-From http://www.top-10.us/elviscost.shtml

Reed Rosenberg (reed), Saturday, 24 July 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I seem to recall hearing Bramlett punched Costello out, which frankly sounds incredibly satisfying all around.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 July 2004 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

you recall correctly.

Reed Rosenberg (reed), Saturday, 24 July 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

ned can you elaborate on that story? boy costello grates on me sometimes - which brings me to a bernard sumner quote i read elsewhere on ILM wherein bernie refers to mr. costello as an "overrated fucking jerk."

also, 10,000,000 hip hop songs to thread, i'll say "takeover" just coz it has that photo of havoc (prodigy?) in a tutu to back it up

jake b. (cerybut), Saturday, 24 July 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, I was the one who posted that Sumner comment! I have nothing to elaborate on this particular tale but it sounds like Reed knows more about it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 July 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

In 2003 he was offered the vocalist slot in a reformed line up of INXS. According to interviews in the metal press, Patton told the band members that he would only front the band if he could hang himself on stage every night, a reference to the suicide of original INXS frontman Michael Hutchence. A few months prior, he urinated on rock critics during a Fantomas gig in London, apparently because they had given him bad reviews.

Mike Patton (nickalicious), Saturday, 24 July 2004 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

low profile = recording an entire album of Stax/Volt covers screaming "I R NOT RACIST, PLEASE BELIEVE ME!!"

(mind you, I don't think I'd find a better way to handle *this* particular situation either)

(hey, I never posted that thing about drinking to ILE that I was going to when this subject came up the last time)

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 24 July 2004 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

(x-post)

Costello later recanted his racist remark and kept a low profile for the remainder of the seventies.

inasmuch as the infamous incident happened in 1979, keeping a low profile for the remainder of the '70s didn't mean a whole lot. columbia records, on the other hand, inflicted its own kind of low profile on costello, refusing to promote "armed forces" and pretty much extinguishing his rising stardom in the u.s.

elvis, for his part, kept working at a furious pace, and it's generally accepted that his next album, the soul-influenced "get happy," was at least partly a response to hearing himself called a racist. ("b-b-but some of my best songs are black!") i believe he addresses this connection directly in the liner notes to the rhino reissue of "get happy," but i don't have that one. around the same time, he also produced the specials' debut album ("b-b-but some of my best productions are black!").

bonnie bramlett never again enjoyed the massive press coverage she received after calling up every reporter she knew to tell them what elvis said.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Saturday, 24 July 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

"get happy" wasn't quite an entire album of stax/volt covers. it was 18 originals and 2 covers. but it certainly had the stax/volt vibe.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Saturday, 24 July 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Miles Davis: "Mick Jagger dances like a white man."

Gilles Meloche (Gilles Meloche), Saturday, 24 July 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Once while guest hosting 120 Minutes, Gibby Haynes accidentally-on-purpose refered to some group (Better Than Ezra?) as "a bland."

j.lu (j.lu), Saturday, 24 July 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

"(They're) a fucking alternative cover band" Kurt Cobain on the Lemonheads

AaronHz (AaronHz), Saturday, 24 July 2004 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

"get happy" wasn't quite an entire album of stax/volt covers. it was 18 originals and 2 covers. but it certainly had the stax/volt vibe.

Thanks man, you're my fact checking cuz.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 24 July 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Mike Patton was offered vocal duties on a post-hutchence INXS reunion tour. Apparently he agreed, but only if he could fake hanging himself on stage every night. The tour never went ahead.

Wooden, Saturday, 24 July 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Wooden, that might mean more if that same exact story hadn't been posted up above. ;-)

Miles Davis: "Mick Jagger dances like a white man."

A tautology that says it all. (At least I think it's a tautology, is it?)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 July 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

speaking of costello, david lee roth to thread

Symplistic (shmuel), Saturday, 24 July 2004 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

At least I think it's a tautology, is it?
It is.
Indeed, Miles statement is true both culturally and mathematically.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 24 July 2004 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I really should read the whole thread before I post in future. Although I paraphrased rather than just imprting my post wholesale from Wikipedia.

No excuse, I know. Just trying to regain some dignity.

Wooden, Saturday, 24 July 2004 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

inxs asked michael patton to sing in their group and he said ok if he could hang himself on stage every night because michael hutchence hung himself and inxs said no so he went and started another shitty eclectic band.

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 24 July 2004 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Mike Patton boned Mike Hutchence up the butt and then killed himself so Michael Hutchence could join Faith No More and sing their big hit song "Suck My Kiss" to VH1 viewers everywhere.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 July 2004 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Michael Hutchence was supposed to hang his shlong and choke himself but he did it the other way round instead and he died so now INXS need to form their own reality show to find a new singer, who may or may not be end up being Mike Patton (it depends if Mark Burnett wants him on the show or not).

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 24 July 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Flea and Jim Martin were egging them on. Their fault.

Wooden, Saturday, 24 July 2004 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuckers.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 July 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

speaking of costello, david lee roth to thread

I'd infinitely rather do Costello than DLR, then or now.

j.lu (j.lu), Saturday, 24 July 2004 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

And now that I think about it, DLR was primarily insulting music critics.

j.lu (j.lu), Saturday, 24 July 2004 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Moz: "We're a hundred times more important than the Police will ever be."

Which is probably true, although the number of Police songs I like outnumber the Smiths songs I like, um, 11:0.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Saturday, 24 July 2004 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

During his drunken "lost weekend" period, John Lennon was asked if Ringo was the best drummer he'd ever worked with, to which he replied, "Ringo wasn't even the best drummer in the Beatles." Ouch.

phil dennison, Sunday, 25 July 2004 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Some L.A. metal band (Motley Crue, Ratt, Van Halen?) said onstage "Let's hear some noise, this ain't no Quiet Riot concert."

nickn (nickn), Sunday, 25 July 2004 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't Mark E. Smith call Steven Malkmus "a BMW-driving cunt" or something?

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Sunday, 25 July 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

When these streets keep callin, heard it when I was sleep
That this Gay-Z and Cockafella Records wanted beef
Started cockin up my weapon, slowly loadin up this ammo
To explode it on a camel, and his soldiers, I can handle
This for dolo and his manuscript just sound stupid
When KRS already made an album called "Blueprint"
First, Biggie's ya man, then you got the nerve to say that you better than Big
Dick suckin lips, why don't you let the late, great veteran live

Y'all niggas deal with emotions like bitches
What's sad is I love you 'cause you're my brother
You traded your soul for riches
My child, I've watched you grow up to be famous
And now I smile like a proud dad, watchin his only son that made it
You seem to be only concerned with dissin women
Were you abused as a child, scared to smile, they called you ugly?
Well life is harsh, hug me, don't reject me
or make records to disrespect me, blatant or indirectly
In '88 you was gettin chased through your buildin
Callin my crib and I ain't even give you my numbers
All I did was gave you a style for you to run with
Smilin in my face, glad to break bread with the god
Wearin Jaz chains, no tecs, no cash, no cars
No jail bars Jigga, no pies, no case
Just Hawaiian shirts, hangin with little Chase
You a fan, a phony, a fake, a pussy, a Stan
I still whip your ass, you thirty-six in a karate class
You Tae-bo hoe, tryna' work it out, you tryna' get brolic?
Ask me if I'm tryna' kick knowledge
Nah, I'm tryna' kick the shit you need to learn though
That ether, that shit that make your soul burn slow
Is he Dame Diddy, Dame Daddy or Dame Dummy?
Oh, I get it, you Biggie and he's Puffy
Rockefeller died of AIDS, that was the end of his chapter
And that's the guy y'all chose to name your company after?
Put it together, I rock hoes, y'all rock fellas
And now y'all try to take my spot, fellas?
Philly's hot rock fellas, put you in a dry spot, fellas
In a pine box with nine shots from my glock, fellas
Foxy got you hot 'cause you kept your face in her puss
What you think, you gettin girls now 'cause of your looks?
Ne-gro please
You no mustache havin, with whiskers like a rat
Compared to Beans you wack
And your man stabbed Un and made you take the blame
You ass, went from Jaz to hangin with Kane, to Irv, to Big
And, Eminem murdered you on your own shit
You a dick-ridin faggot, you love the attention
Queens niggas run you niggas, ask Russell Simmons
Ha, R-O-C get gunned up and clapped quick
J.J. Evans get gunned up and clapped quick
Your whole damn record label gunned up and clapped quick
Shaun Carter to Jay-Z, damn you on Jaz dick
So little shorty's gettin gunned up and clapped quick
How much of Biggie's rhymes is gon' come out your fat lips?
Wanted to be on every last one of my classics
You pop shit, apologize, nigga, just ask Kiss

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 25 July 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Axl Rose on Buckethead: During his tenure with the band Buckethead has been inconsistent and erratic in both his behavior and commitment - despite being under contract - creating uncertainty and confusion and making it virtually impossible to move forward with recording, rehearsals and live plans with confidence. His transient lifestyle has made it impossible for even his closest friends to have nearly any form of communication with him whatsoever. Last time I talked to Bucket, he called to tell me he had bought a bootleg DVD off EBay and how proud he was to be in Guns and how impressed he was with everyone's performance. Then, in February we got word from Brain that Bucket had called him and said he was back in Guns!? Apparently, according to Bucket he had been "Gone" but had turned himself around and was really excited to do Rio-Lisbon and a European tour. Somewhere in the following month things changed once again. According to those who have actually spoken with Buckethead it appears his plans were to secure a recording contract with Sanctuary Records which I encouraged my management to make available to him, quit GN'R and to use his involvement in the upcoming Guns release to immediately promote his individual efforts...Nice guy!

spittle (spittle), Sunday, 25 July 2004 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not so much the pot calling the kettle black as the goofus calling the bucket psychotic.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 25 July 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Something about that reminds me of the war of words between the Lupine Howl and Jason Pierce camps after Jason fired almost all of Spiritualized. I believe Michael Mooney's highly quotable line was "Being in Lupine Howl is almost exactly like being in Spiritualized, except that there are no assholes in the group".

Nevertheless, I side with Jason on this one, since he is the godlike genius and Lupine Howl are crap.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 25 July 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

That's for fucking sure. Lupine Howl go on about how badass they are and my god what a shower of unmitigated bacteriod slop they finally record. I hope they're picking nits off each other drunk in front of the Spz show in London this week asking for handouts.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 25 July 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

"During his tenure with the band Buckethead has been inconsistent and erratic..."

Where's the thread where someone point out that the guy's called Buckethead, for fucksake, and what was Axl expecting? I damn near pissed my pants at that one.

"Not like the Streets, who talks like a cockney
Ain't you from Birmingham ya knob, ya get meh
We don't give a frig about your friggin' aerial
So stick it up you arse with your pirate material."

Until abouyt ten minutes ago I thought this was a thread about classical musicians hatin' on each other and didn't bother reading. And I couldn't, for the life of me give a rat's ass about Julian Breams threatening to send a horse-hair fiddle up Itzhak Perlman's withery ass. so I was amazed at the quantity of posts on that (supposed) topic.

j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Monday, 26 July 2004 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

nine months pass...
can someone explain the original remarks by malkmus against billy corgan? i know range life and billie were supposed to be disses (although very tame ones) but what prompted these?

someone correct me if i'm wrong, but... in the liner notes to the deluxe CRCR, someone notes that those weren't the original lyrics (and I think that the alternate version of "Range Life" has the original ones) and that malkmus just sang those demi-diss lyrics during rehearsal (even recording?) for no apparent reason and everyone started cracking up.

Apparently, Bill Corgan responded: "No one wakes up in the morning humming Pavement songs." PWNED (not)

I'm not sure if Scott Weiland even knows who Pavement is..
