latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 24 July 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

You mean the goofy-as-fuck animated one for "Paranoid Android"? Radiohead (or at least their cartoon counterparts) were most certainly in that video. Which sucked ass, btw.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Saturday, 24 July 2004 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

The closest video Radiohead has to not featuring Radiohead in it is "Karma Police" which only has Ol' Squinty and that fat dude that's running away.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Saturday, 24 July 2004 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Talking Heads' "Crosseyed & Painless"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Saturday, 24 July 2004 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Although I could be wrong, I haven't seen it since I was single-digits in age.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Saturday, 24 July 2004 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Ol' Squinty and that fat dude that's running away.

A team to rival Hardcastle and McCormick.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 25 July 2004 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Was REM's "It's The End Of the World As We Know It" the one with the skateboarder at the abandoned house? If so, REM weren't in that video.

Jonathan (Jonathan), Sunday, 25 July 2004 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

REM weren't in a lot of their 80's vids IIRC.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 25 July 2004 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

that animated pearl jam video (at least i don't remember them being in it).

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 25 July 2004 06:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Do the evolution! That was a great video.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Sunday, 25 July 2004 07:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Belle and Sebastian- Your Cover's Blown

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 25 July 2004 08:18 (twenty-one years ago)

fatboy slim's in all his videos isn't he?

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 25 July 2004 08:24 (twenty-one years ago)

all those corny stock footage videos of sixties tunes from the eighties (they used to show them on vh1 classix too until they started spinning nirvana and shit) where they'll play 'purple haze' or 'tracks of my tears' or something and show people riding rollercoasters or skydiving or whatever for three and a half minutes.

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 25 July 2004 08:26 (twenty-one years ago)

which reminds me: van halen - "dreams"

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 25 July 2004 08:27 (twenty-one years ago)

fatboy slim's in all his videos isn't he?

nope that's definitely Christopher Walken in 'Weapon Of Choice' hur hur

the only vids Fatboy has appeared in are 'Bird Of Prey' and 'Rockerfeller Skank' in fact, and 'Build It Up Tear It Down' if that counts

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Sunday, 25 July 2004 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

and um, 'weapon of choice' and 'praise you'

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 25 July 2004 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Where is he in Weapon of Choice? Interested cos I saw it on bigscreen on Sat, didn't see him or any opportunity for him to be hiding

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 25 July 2004 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't remember him being in 'Praise You' either but yeh he was a passer-by watching the dancing or something?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Sunday, 25 July 2004 10:33 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a painting of him on the wall of the hotel in "Weapon of Choice." Don't know if that counts.

Wooden, Sunday, 25 July 2004 10:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Close enough for me. Too stoned to notice something obvious like that and yeah S. he's on camera for a couple of seconds or so in Praise You

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 25 July 2004 10:35 (twenty-one years ago)

"Praise You " - Fatboy Slim

He appears at the end of the video, walking behind Spike Jonez as he's being interviewed and trying to get on camera. (Xpost)

Anything by The New Pornographers, although they do appear in a still photo in the video for "The Law Has Changed."

They appear in their video for "Your Daddy Don't Know" wearing fake mustasches and '80's hair and performing the song.

"I Can Dream About You" by Dan Hartman used the band lip-syncing scene from Streets of Fire and not him. Although I think they did another video later where we found out he wasn't black.

Vic Funk, Sunday, 25 July 2004 10:35 (twenty-one years ago)

-- cinniblount (littlejohnnyjewe...), July 25th, 2004.

Did you see the reconstituted video for the Doors LA Woman from 198? Which featured a bandaged couple dancing in tango circles until someone goes shopping then dies? Probably still better than seeing J Morrison dancing though, I dunno

Vic (Vic), Sunday, 25 July 2004 10:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i was gonna say all the Shynola-directed videos but rememberd the one for Queens Of The Stone Age 'Go With The Flow' DOES feature the band albeit only in CGI 'silhouette-esque' form

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Sunday, 25 July 2004 10:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Enigma's "Return to Innocence" is the first one to come to mind. And "Raindrop" by Massive Attack.

Also, a bunch of old trance/techno videos from the early nineties (by Westbam etc.), which mainly featured bad computer graphics.

Did the video for "Yoga" have any footage of Björk herself, I can't remember? What about Massive Attack's "Protection"?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 25 July 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Make that "Teardrop"...

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 25 July 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

What about Massive Attack's "Protection"?

All three of the core band are seen at one point or another in separate rooms in the apartment building set. Definitely one of Gondry's best efforts.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 25 July 2004 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I've just checked my Gondry DVD, and "Joga" has a brief appearence by Bjork.

Wooden, Sunday, 25 July 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

What about "Afrika Shox" by Leftfield & Afrika Bambaataa?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 25 July 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Bambaataa appears in that but Leftfield, as usual, do not (the only video they appeared in was 'Release The pressure' i think)

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Sunday, 25 July 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's fairly easy to come up with videos for (instrumental) techno tracks which don't show the artist, especially if you go back to the time before techno producers became stars. But what about rap videos that don't feature the rapper? Rap is such a personality-drive genre it's hard to come up with any examples, the only one I can think of is The Infesticons' "Hero Theme".

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 25 July 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Quannum's 'I Changed My Mind' does not feature the rappers as it's all CGI by Shynola

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Sunday, 25 July 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

tho in that track Lyrics Born is actually singing rather than rapping as he tends to do

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Sunday, 25 July 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

New Order - those Technique era videos mostly featured just models and children, no?

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Sunday, 25 July 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

chemical brothers to thread!

well. they are in the videos, but at such minute times much like fatboy slim, i can't say they are featured.

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Sunday, 25 July 2004 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The White Stripes "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself"

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 25 July 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

do the chem bros appear in the train one? star guitar, is it?

radiohead - pyramid song

common_person (common_person), Sunday, 25 July 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

George Michael's "Praying for Time" features only words, no people at all.

Joseph McCombs, Sunday, 25 July 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

So does Prince's "Sign O'the Times", right?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 25 July 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

really hard to think of hip hop vids without the rappers appearing

do the chem bros appear in the train one? star guitar, is it?

there is a faint reflection of someone in the window of the train which MIGHT be Tom Rowlands but not sure

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Sunday, 25 July 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

TMBG - 'Istanbul Not Constanople'

Chemical Brothers tend to appear in the background to all their videos. Im sure they are in the train one but can't recall for sure.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Sunday, 25 July 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Prozzak!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Sunday, 25 July 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

The version of "Major Leagues" by Pavement that features a guy wearing headphones watching a wrestling match. The original version did have Pavement in it, but according to the DVD, Malkmus was acting a little too ghey.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Sunday, 25 July 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

The Chem Bros. are in "Star Guitar," you can see them reflected in the train windows at a couple points.

The only Chem video I recall without a cameo from Tom & Ed is "The Test," unless I just missed that one.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Sunday, 25 July 2004 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a posthumous Notorious B.I.G. video in which the director took the Bugsy Malone approach -- all kids playing Biggie, Puffy, Junior M.A.F.I.A., etc.

j.lu (j.lu), Sunday, 25 July 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

R.E.M. - "Fall on Me"
The Smiths - "There is a Light That Never Goes Out"
U2 - "One"

frankE (frankE), Sunday, 25 July 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

U2 - "One"

Aren't there multiple versions of this video? There's one with buffalos, but I think it tanked so they re-did it with Bono singing at a bar or something.

Vic Funk, Sunday, 25 July 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

prodge smack my bitch up

..., Sunday, 25 July 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

haha - the 'original' version of madonna's "true blue" video

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 25 July 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

possibly never shown outside the us (and possibly not shown for past 17 years)

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 25 July 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Cinni, tell me more!

Wooden, Sunday, 25 July 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

haha - mtv had this contest where YOU get to make the next madonna video, which was to be for 'true blue'; this was when mtv had huge contests - giving away a pink house circa mellencamp's "pink houses" being a hit, etc. anyhow, TONS of submissions, a good 60% of which consisted of just people standing in front of the camcorder and lipsyncing it, the winner was comparatively slick (though not too slick really - it still stuck out as clearly 'not professionally made' when it aired in rotation), sepia b&w, two young good looking (but not TOO good looking, clearly just friends of the dude who made it) kids in love (true love), fifties setting - takeout the dialogue from paula abdul's "rush" video and then cross it with yr standard 80s rem video and you've pretty much got it. madonna presented the winner with a check or something, big big hoohaw, the thing airs in rotation for maybe three weeks and then gets replaced by the 'real' video people are more familiar with now with nary a word of explanation.

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 25 July 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

YES! I always kicked myself I didn't tape all those video submissions when they screened them that one day, because that would have been the most bizarre 1986-slice-of-life collection everywhere. But I thought that the winner was screened for a lot longer than that (it was indeed a very enjoyable effort) -- and I have no memory of the Madonna-featuring "True Blue" at all!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 25 July 2004 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn! I thought it was gonna be some kind of hardcore porn thing.

Wooden, Sunday, 25 July 2004 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

ned - the madonna featuring "true blue" video is some generic shit; shot on some studio stage, everything blue, i think madonna has on a blue polka dot top in it, she hangs with her girlfriends, there's a 57 chevy, it's really really lowrent, esp. for the time (aLONG ways from 'open your heart')(which was maybe the other madonna hit that was out at the same time - i remember she had two concurrent hits on the charts at this time, maybe it was 'la isla bonita'), clearly tossed off and half assed, like they made it just to be aired in europe.

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 25 July 2004 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

if vh1 classix was becoming more cool instead of less cool they would devote one day a week just showing some original vj's era day of mtv unchanged (cept the commercials), and the day of camcorder trueblues would be a mustsee.

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 25 July 2004 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

every techno/electronica video ever made

Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 25 July 2004 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

clearly tossed off and half assed, like they made it just to be aired in europe.

Good god. Glad I know nothing about it.
