Pens for writing on CD-Rs

I keep buying crappy 'CD markers' from WHSmith that dry out very easily and make a very wishy-washy line, because I'm worried about regular permanent markers damaging the disc. Am I right to worry? Can 'the wrong ink' seep through and make the disc unplayable?

I've got a nice chisel tip marker that I'd like to use. Don't know if it's water or oil-based - it smells solventy though.

Anyone?

Yeah, I know there are lots of pens that say they're safe, but I have a CD I want to write on now, and I want to know if all this 'safe for CD-RS' stuff is just marketing hype and that really, any pen will do.

i.e. "Never use a solvent-based "permanent" marker on a CD-R -- it can eat through the lacquer coat and destroy the disc."

(I wouldn't use a Sharpie either)

pencil, mechanical is best.

for writing the data.

CD capacity reduces to: 67 bytes.

Maybe it's oily smelling. I don't know what solvents are supposed to smell like now. . It all seems a bit vague, the advice. Thanks for the link, though.

I've googled my Ikon K35 permanent chisel tip and am none the wiser.

I've been using fine point Sharpies for 5 years and haven't ruined a disc yet.

i don't write on them. if my enemies ever got into my house, they could easily ruin my record colelction by just switching the discs around. good fucking luck differentiating between all of those noise cds once they're out of their handwritten cases.

It never even crossed my mind that a Sharpie might not be okay to use. I would worry about this if I hadn't been using sharpies on my discs for like six years now without incident.

I use sharpies too.

Again, never used anything but a Sharpie.

The new metallic silver sharpies look wonderful on a CD.

I wish I knew if my pen was the equivalent of these 'Sharpies'.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 25 July 2004 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, a Sharpie, no question. And I really doubt the tiny amount of alcohol in the ink would eat through the entire thickness of the CD to affect the data on the other side.

57 7th (calstars), Sunday, 25 July 2004 03:15 (twenty-one years ago)

IIRC the data is actually closer to the side you write on, which it why CD buffers work, but whatever. I'm not worried either.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 25 July 2004 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

It's never affected any of my CD-R's.

how do you people live with yourselves

jesus, Sunday, 25 July 2004 06:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh no! Writing on CDs is like a total sin!
