Siegbran quizzed by the Mole on Darkthrone

Actually, I think a lot of techno tunes could be played in minimalist Darkthrone-style black metal - same songwriting approach and melodicism, only different texture...
-- Siegbran

Siegbran, could you elaborate? Also - I have Transilvanian Hunger and if I wanted to research this idea of yours further, which Darkthrone album should I check out next? And have you heard the new one yet?

my friend can play transylvanian hunger tracks perfectly on the piano. it sounds like a really fast classical piece really.

siegbran's statement seems pretty self-explanatory.

Hi Vas. el sabor is right, but I was wondering if Siegbran had something specific in mind in terms of instrumentation etc.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Sunday, 25 July 2004 10:02 (twenty-one years ago)

he is asking the media what will work now

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 25 July 2004 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

gaz, you've had a couple of jars? Or am I mistaken?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Sunday, 25 July 2004 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

and some nice brittle chunky ****s

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 25 July 2004 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh well. It was a genuine query.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Sunday, 25 July 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i think "transilvanian hunger" is a perfect example - the faster tracks have monotonous beats, simple three note melody lines, it's all about trance music baby.

I've only heard a few of the 'classic' black metal albums from Norway, but Transilvanian Hunger one was the one that most appealed to me, and not least because it seemed so close to dark trance techno already. My personal interest was to try to transfer that black metal sound into an electronic equivalent.

When I did so, however, I found the one-two blast patterns were so fast and furious that they could not be upfront in the mix without overpowering the riffs and hence the mood(I was using electronic riffs thru distortion pedals as guitar sunstitutes, which worked very well, and created a very cold sound). The problem was solved by making the drums extremely quiet(as they are on Transilvanian Hunger -and I notice Ulver follow the same principle on Nattens Madrigal, ie putting the frenetic drums WAY back in the mix and letting the guitars and vocals lead).

So that was all well and good, but hey, I wanted this to be dance music too, so the drums needed to be LOUD or at least not pitter-patter soft... so I went for a half-speed electro pattern instead. It worked very well, though it's not quite so faithful to the Darkthrone sound. The mood remains, but it's a lot more relaxed, less agitated. Still sounds quite menacing however, and very very cold. I don't actually have a problem with changing the rhythm, but it instantly took it out of the black metal camp and into the dance music camp.

Oh yeah and a US label's putting it out, prob on 12". So it has a happy ending. But I wonder if maybe having quiet drums is crucial if you want to keep those blast patterns plus the droning melody patterns, and remain with that agitated, frenetic sound.

ESTRAGON:
Let's go.
VLADIMIR:
We can't.
ESTRAGON:
Why not?
VLADIMIR:
We're waiting for Siegbran.
ESTRAGON:
(despairingly). Ah! (Pause.)

It is sounding quite like mixing yoghurt with olive oils Mole.

Sami Jherllkanyga, Monday, 26 July 2004 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, Sami, you have it I think. And yet, I am thinking, is not olive oil and yoghurt together perhaps delicious? For I am thinking maybe Moroccan tonight?

However, may I perhaps to invite you to the Czech blastcore thread? For this dance music lover is clearly weak like a woman or a mere intellectual. There, on the blastcore thread, which I revived today like the forgotten spirits of our ancestors, you may enjoy the company of strong men with no fear of the cold.

Janne Karlsson, Monday, 26 July 2004 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i want to hear that stuff, mole! let us know what happens there.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Monday, 26 July 2004 05:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Sure el sabor, I'd be happy to send it to you. It'll take about 4 months to complete.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 26 July 2004 05:25 (twenty-one years ago)
