Corporate Ghost C/D, S/D?

I'm referring to the new DVD of the collected videos of Sonic Youth that covers the post-'sell out' period (after 1990 or so). I'm probably going to buy it soon, but I'm wondering if anyone has actually sat down and watched all the videos and whether this collection is worth it for a big-time SY fan, but not really a huge enthusiast of the music video.
I've read some of the descriptions of the videos and they sound interesting. I eagerly await the pre-sellout collection. (What videos can I expect from that one?)
P.S. I've seen the Macauly Culkin 'Sunday' video and it's pretty funny. Poor bastard.

Just went and bought it. Will report back. Maybe I should have titled thread Sonic Youth -- Corporate Ghost to peek more interest. Oh well...

Hey, I'm back, and it's really good. A fun document of a time and a place, or times and place throughout the 90's and early 21st century. Haven't watched much but I like it so far.

i wish i had the energy to be a SY completist - when I think really hard about it, they're probably the most important band of my generation. I'll get around to picking this up eventually

On a first glance, the 'little trouble girl' video with Kim Deal is probably the best. I was kind of neurotically worried about watching the videos because I have my own mental story for every song and didn't want seeing the actual video to ruin my own ideas about the song and the band and so forth. But some of the stuff on this DVD is great: Mike Watt tells a very funny story. There is a video from Thurston Moore's solo album which I've never seen and some other cool commentary. I'm glad I have this. NYC Ghosts and Flowers is the only major release I don't have now. But I've heard such goddawful things about it...

Do they just go ahead and include the entirety of the Goo videotape on it?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 26 July 2004 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Yup. Some of its great. Some of its painful. Some of it is OMFG I can't believe I had long hair and wore a plaid shirt every day too.

Long hair is no bad thing. ;-)

I think by the Goo videotape you mean the 11 videos that were part of the contest (which was a cool idea BTW), right? (They are all there)

Gilles Meloche (Gilles Meloche), Monday, 26 July 2004 03:50 (twenty-one years ago)

For me it was!

Gilles Meloche (Gilles Meloche), Monday, 26 July 2004 03:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember there being some talk about the first pressing of the DVD having some glitches on the menu, which is the only thing that made me hesitate from picking it up when I saw it in the store the other day, does anyone know if that problem has been corrected and that most copies on the shelves now are good?

Al (sitcom), Monday, 26 July 2004 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

the issues were with the euro versions, not the US.

overall, CG is a great thing. the entire Goo tape is alright, never a huge fan of it, like the idea. what was it? like 1500 per video, do whatever.
i don't know if it's on there, but supposedly there's another version of that "scooter+jinx" video that a bit 'racier'. damn that R Kern!

i'm happy with it. but, there was little on there i didn't already have. more live stuff, please. i already own 'screaming fields'...

I thought the oddest thing aboot the collection was that I'd seen all the made for TV videos before, many times in some cases, except for the obviously expensive ones ("Youth Against Fascism" and "Little Trouble Girl"), which I'd never seen at all. This probably explains why the band has had no video budget for the last few albums.

NYC Ghosts and Flowers is the only major release I don't have now. But I've heard such goddawful things about it...

It's better than, say, A Thousand Leaves or Murray Street.

Vic Funk, Monday, 26 July 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, A Thousand Leaves is pretty overrated. Gee, the vido for 'Sunday' is funny.

thirteen years pass...

I've owned this DVD for years but I'm not sure I ever actually watched the "Youth Against Fascism" video until now and, huh, it might actually add something. Also, song seems oddly more relevant these days.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Thursday, 31 August 2017 23:54 (eight years ago)
