1. Magnetic Fields -- 69 Love Songs
It's making me feel lonely. And yet I can't stop myself from listening to it.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 25 July 2004 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Blood on the Tracks ... I just ended a one-year relationship. Boy was listening to that a catharsis and a half.

Chris O., Sunday, 25 July 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd say 69 love songs is the worst album to listen to when you're NOT single. it's so pessimistic it makes me want to go straight up to the door and dump her before we start bickering! ;-)

dog latin (dog latin), Sunday, 25 July 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

my pick for Album You Shouldn't Listen To When You're NOT single is Gang Of Four's Entertainment!.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 25 July 2004 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"i've never loved a man the way i love you" by aretha franklin. and also, "jenny" by sleater kinney is like the worst song they ever recorded. HOLY GUACAMOLE. OH OH OH and anything by the smiths, DUH! alsooooo, that song "in the aeroplane over the sea" by neutral milk hotel (one of the few songs with mostly coherent lyrical subject matter).

bart hooganot (stimpson), Sunday, 25 July 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Marvin Gaye-"Here, My Dear"

broken twig, Sunday, 25 July 2004 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

the smiths are the soundtrack for quirky alones.

keith m (keithmcl), Monday, 26 July 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

alsooooo, that song "in the aeroplane over the sea"
You must be referring to the title track ... yeah, that one stirs the lonely feelings as well.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 26 July 2004 08:12 (twenty-one years ago)

marvin gaye - here my dear
anything by the smiths really

thesplooge (thesplooge), Monday, 26 July 2004 08:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Converge - Jane Doe
The ultimate i'm going to die alone record.

edu, Monday, 26 July 2004 08:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Deserter's Songs. Or maybe you *should* listen to it while single, especially newly dumped.

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 26 July 2004 08:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I always thought that some songs on 69LS (specially "I don't believe in the Sun") were ideal to listen while single and unloved: it gives you that soothing feeling that you aren't the only one suffering... ;)

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Monday, 26 July 2004 09:21 (twenty-one years ago)

ida's "i know about you"

purple patch (electricsound), Monday, 26 July 2004 09:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Seam - Are You Driving Me Crazy

Really.

marcdrums, Monday, 26 July 2004 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I always thought that some songs on 69LS (specially "I don't believe in the Sun") were ideal to listen while single and unloved:
That's the double-edged sword of 69LS -- it can be soothing (and make you feel better about not having all this drama in your single life) but you can also realize that you miss not having that drama around.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 26 July 2004 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Lady in Satin - Billie Holiday

flowersdie (flowersdie), Monday, 26 July 2004 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

true about magnetic fields. songs like "queen of the savages" you just don't know if he likes the girl or is resentful of her - very much like a relationship i suppose.

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 26 July 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Gentlemen by Afghan Whigs

nader (nader), Monday, 26 July 2004 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

surely these are all albums that are best enjoyed/wallowed in by singles & dumped & despairing? what use do the happily married have for the smiths except to remind them of when they weren't?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 26 July 2004 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

sebadoh - the freed weed

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 26 July 2004 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

any of the red house painters albums

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Monday, 26 July 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

OTM

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 26 July 2004 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

beck: sea change

it will convince you that relationships are rotten anyway.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Monday, 26 July 2004 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

One of the best post-break up albums is This Year's Model. The number of implied "bitch"s expands exponentially the messier the break up is.

Mike Salmo (salmo), Monday, 26 July 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Sade - Lovers Rock

I dunno, it somehow engenders bitterness and jealousy in me when I haven't someone to sing lines like hers to.

Joseph McCombs, Monday, 26 July 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

x - wild gift
richard and linda thompson - shoot out the lights
womack and womack - love wars
fleetwood mac - rumours
eminem - the marshall mathers album
elvis costello - this year's model

(actually, i don't know if any of those - or many of the albums mentioned above - would even make *sense* if you're single. or even if you're happily *not* single, for that matter.)

chuck, Monday, 26 July 2004 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Songs such as "Second Hand News" or "Never Going Back Again" (from Rumours) are exactly the sort of thing you don't want to hear when you're single. Or maybe that's just me. I don't always like being reminded of the happy stuff, it reminds me about the things I'm missing.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 26 July 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Was just discussing this with a friend last night. Bobby Bland's 'Two Steps From the Blues.'

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Monday, 26 July 2004 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

smog - the doctor came at dawn

trust me, this will not pick you up at all.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 26 July 2004 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

what use do the happily married have for the smiths except to remind them of when they weren't?

*coughs*

"But don't forget the songs
That made you cry
And the songs that saved your life
Yes, you're older now
And you're a clever swine
But they were the only ones who ever stood by you

The passing of time leaves empty lives
Waiting to be filled (the passing ...)
The passing of time
Leaves empty lives
Waiting to be filled
I'm here with the cause
I'm holding the torch
In the corner of your room
Can you hear me ?
And when you're dancing and laughing
And finally living
Hear my voice in your head
And think of me kindly"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 26 July 2004 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)
